>>2904773The Sacred Valley as a whole is kino. Machu Picchu is a racket. It costs around $200 USD for the full trip there and back from Cusco. It could easily be a rainy day as well and that can ruin the entire trip. South America has some incredible nature, but don't go mainly for Machu Picchu.

Cultural immersion as a European descended person is doable in South America. Most people in the whiter parts of the continent don't assume I am a foreigner at first glance. Spanish is a European language which I can speak passably well. In tropical Asia I will always be a visible outsider, speaking only English (because Asian languages are quite simply unpronounceable). The barriers are higher. And with prices rising in countries like Thailand, I don't buy the premise that Southeast Asia is sooo much cheaper either. Time will tell what my upcoming Peru+ trip costs per day.
