It was a case of right time/right place
He only really started traveling in the early/mid 2000's. Globalization was in full effect, countries were open and accessible, but smartphones and browns weren't an issue yet. By the mid-to-late 2010s, it was pretty much over.

Anthony was kind of a failson of New York execs. A punk rock kid who became a chef and got hooked on heroin. Eventually got clean.
He wrote a (good) book about being a chef called Kitchen Confidential. His NYTimes mom got it published, and he became a star overnight. He was like a daywalker, able to class.
He got offered the Travel Channel show and carried over a punk rock energy that other shows just didn't have at the time. Samantha Brown cheerily posing with Beefeaters at the Tower of London was something people had seen before.
Anthony mopeding around Vietnam and eating street food wasn't.
Yes, he was a boomer and promulgated some cringe lib takes on his show from time to time.
His peak episodes were in 2012 when he went to Italy and France with chef bros in Season 9 Episodes 4 and 5.
If he figured out anything, it was that if you play with fire, you're going to get burned.

Fair writeup. No Reservations is a good show and only sometimes cringe because of modern lens. The latter show with CNN was mostly propagandist slop though.
