how the hell do you guys take longer than a 2 week trip? After 2 weeks it cost more than rent in most cities and thats not even accounting for transport and food cost. Airbnb looks cheaper for longer stays but then you need to deal with rules, insane host, and "cleaning fees".

When I only got 2 weeks vaca I would fluff it against a 3 day weekend where I would drop a day off on Thursday and a day off on Monday giving me 5 days off for the "price" of 2. Do that a few times through the year and it goes a long way. I'd just drive up to flagstaff or short hop flight on whatever cheapo ticket to LA for some event back then. One of the biggest causes of high hotel prices in America is the fact that every municipality sees lodging as a cash cow for tax revenue. Locals love raising taxes on lodging because it is one of the few forms of taxation which does not impact their budget. Often 17% or more taxes are levied on every night's room rate, and this doesn't even count all the other forms of taxation that hotel owners pay out of pocket, like business licenses, state income tax and property tax. You could say that easily 50% or more of a hotel's price goes directly into the government's pockets.
