Why doesn't America have cheap hostels? Is this an untapped billion dollar market? Or is there some reason, like regulations or whatever the US doesn't have them?

Cheap hostels exist they just aren't usually worth it. Hostelworld has a few but bro you have to be desperate.I use them in Hawaii all require proof of flight out of the state, other ones in the USA require you to prove not within X miles, etc. Hawaii is really the only state outside Alaska I'd do a hostel in in, maybe Guam. Goes without saying that hostels are often designed with shoestring budget foreign tourists in mind.The US is a massive country. It doesn't make sense to have cheap hostels everywhere. Every foreign tourist is going to popular places like New York, Los Angeles, Miami, etc. You don't really need a hostel in Bumfuck Iowa.So you build cheap hostels in New York. Tourists don't stand a chance. If a local low-income New Yorker hears about a cheap room, they're gonna book them immediately and indefinitely. Forget the crime for a minute, the hostels will just be outright sold out.

Most Americans are intensely private people who feel very awkward in close quarters with strangers. Hence their dislike of public transit and hostels.
