The western half of Ireland is better than the east. The east is similar to England albeit with a lower population density. All major cities in Ireland look similar and only differ in scale, Galway being the only one which looks noticeably different and that's largely restricted to Eire Square and the surrounding streets. Public transport is competent given the low population density. Accommodation certainly used to be affordable when I was hostelling (20-30 Euro a night, not sure if this is still the case. Back when I used to visit I'd travel a circular route around the island (Belfast - Derry/ Londonderry - Galway - Killarney - Cork - Dublin) with some variation in extra/ less towns. I'd personally axe off Cork as the city is forgettable and has no real tourist value, Derry/ Londonderry I was interested in due to its history during the Troubles but it is a generic UK town, there's nothing more to be said. Most value in Ireland will be found in the countryside and coastal areas, the cities should be generally avoided as they are purely commercial centres. Killarney is and always has been my favourite part of Ireland, its relaxing and has good nature around. Drogheda near Dublin has access to Newgrange which is certainly worth seeing if you're in the eastern part. Belfast and Dublin themselves feel like large generic UK cities, Liverpool beats both in my opinion from a tourist perspective, I'd argue Bristol is even better than both. Between the two cities I find Belfast more interesting but I wouldn't return to either.

Also there are a lot of regional airports in Ireland which you can cheaply fly to. You can basically go straight to Galway via plane or to Killarney via Shannon. You don't have to fly to Dublin or Belfast. You can even fly to Knock for cheap and there's fucking nothing there.

I don't know about the Dingle Peninsula but Skellig Michael is a bitch to get to and I've never accomplished it myself. One of those things you have to book way in advance, note most tours don't even go onto the island, so you want to do your research before you make any kind of commitment. I found basing in places and taking day-trips preferable. From Galway you could see the Cliffs of Moher and Carrountouhil for sure. Galway itself doesn't have tonnes to offer other than a cozy small town environment. I think 3 days there would be nice. Also check for concerts and things.

Used to live in Galway for nearly a decade. A day trip to Inis Mor is a must, in the summer there's a ferry from the city harbour but the rest of the year you get a shuttle bus from Eyre Square to Connemara and then a shorter ferry across to the island. Do get a cab tour as soon as you leave the ship, they'll bring you to the hike up to Dun Aoengus and bring you back, they might bring you to see Poll an Bheist as well. If you have nice weather the ferry will bring you back past the Cliffs saving you a trip to visit them.

Other places worth travelling to: Cong, no direct bus but there are bus tours to Connemara including Kylemore Abbey and Killary Harbour that stop there first. Lovely little village.

Westport. An hourly bus can be taken from Galway and back. Doolin on the opposite side of Galway bay could be another option which is where you'll go to see the Cliffs. I don't particularly recommend them.

Places in town to check out: Charlie Byrne's book shop, the Crane Bar for trad music in an old school pub that smells like piss, Roisin Dubh if they've any live music on, Hugh's pub in Woodquay for another authentic pub experience. Nightlife in Galway is unparalleled in Ireland, you can just start talking to random people in the pub and end up in some house party with a dozen strangers.

Living here is nice (mostly). Most of the things you'd wanna/have to see have been heavily touristified. Dublin is a grim city not unlike the coastal shitholes in the UK. The people here are talkative and wonderful unlike the asocial spergs you meet in a lot of mainland Europe and UK cities. The countryside is beautiful and the less Anglicised parts in the north, south and west are much nicer than the urban east. Dublin itself has a lot of annoying wankers who act as high and mighty as New Yorkers or Londonites. If I'm being honest I'd only come here if you can stay long enough to form bonds and friendships with people, and actually explore the country. As a tourist trail it's shit.

It will most likely be cold, wet and dark. It rains like 250 days in the year in the west coast and it will likely be quite windy. Of course you can still visit the Aran Islands or Cliffs, but bring a good rain jacket/wind breaker. For the Aran Islands I'd recommend just picking one, either Inis Mor (described above) or Inis Oirr (the smallest, can be got around on foot easily). There's absolutely nothing to see on Inis Meann except fields full of cattle and IIRC there's no direct ferry from the mainland.

There is a real charm though to being in a lively pub with a turf fire going and a trad ceilidh playing while it's dark at 6pm and pissing rain on the window though, if you're expecting to go hiking and purely outdoorsy stuff you're visiting in the wrong time of the year really. But if you're there and the sun is shining you're really blessed, nothing beats Galway in good weather.

You'd have to be in the middle of a storm for the ferry to be cancelled, it's also used by inhabitants of the islands to commute to the mainland so it still operates in fairly choppy water. there's a good chance you'll see some chink or spic tourist puke their guts out

I stayed here two weeks in August to see Oasis last year. Overall the country is pretty to look at but if you're not an avid hiker it was too much time for me.

Aran Islands, renting a bike, was really amazing but my only gripe was that the ferry I took returned pretty early in the evening and there were no other options. I almost missed the boat and almost got stranded on the island.

Doolin / Cliffs of Moehr are touristy but honestly worth doing

Blarney Castle and gardens were an unexpected highlight. I had no interest in this at first but got bored enough and was pleasantly surprised. The gardens were almost as interesting as the castle itself.
