you're paying usually a ludicrous 3-6x compared to an economy seat (even with exit row / bulkhead seats)
only for a slightly better meal and slightly more space (compared to exit row seats)
you're still getting to the same destination as everyone else

lie flat seats for overnight flights are the only redeeming quality
which is why my employer pays for my to fly business (on the rare occasions that I fly)
but privately not even that makes sense
I have 30 vacation days, doing half a spa day to compensate for the less good sleep, costs 1/10th of the ticket price and my wife wants to do this anyway, so nothing is lost

intercontinental rt like Europe to Asia, business class is usually like 3-4k p.P. vs 800-1200 for economy (add 200 for better seats)
so you're dropping almost 3k€ to feel special for 10h
for that kind of money you can do

>or 2-3 nights in some super fancy hotel (Rosewood/MO/Aman/RC/Capella etc.)

or tons of other things like getting guides, access to exclusive sights and so on

that being said, I've taken 1 long haul first class flight this year, and 5 business class flights. my last business class was start of august SYD to HKG on Qantas A330, the new fit out, lie flat seat.

once calculated it with my countries points scheme, I'd have to spend >50k€/year on consoooming just to get to 2 business class rt
and this includes wasting my time by checking an app constantly for bonus points and shopping and specific locations
and all the big purchases don't even collect points, mortgage / utilities / ETF savings plan are just a bank transfers, car / gym is paid by company
I'm not doubling my consoomer spend just to maybe get a ticket one day (cashback is better value anyway)

if you can genuinely afford everything, then fine

I've got a rear facing seat on ANA's The Room next year, don't think I've ever flown backwards before, so should be interesting. The seat width on that thing is berserk; 38 inches. You could fit two people in there easy, that's more than double the economy seat width (17.2 inches)
Plan is to have the Japanese meal, get 6 hours of sleep, then watch movies and hit the Hibiki until landing

here "payback" exists, and is the main one, if you plan around you can get like ~5 points/miles per euro spend (regular is 1point/2€), but again it's only consumer stuff and groceries
amex was not widely accepted in the past
and cashback cc are more the norm nowadays, i think the best currently has 1% up to 150€ so 15k/month spending

It's a holdover from when business was the mid-tier option. Nowadays a lot of carriers have expanded premium economy and eliminated first class cabins while upgrading business class to the standards of what was first class. So basically that's boomer premium economy seats.

In the US I could get a business 1.5 or 2% cashback card and route expenses through there, but I can't use that cashback against personal expenses. If I route my business's 300-400k of expenses through a CC, that's only 6-8k pretax dollars, aka 4-5k post-tax. Or I could max out status on an airline or two, and get 6-8k worth of upgrades/flights/companion tickets whatever. For anyone who travels for leisure and runs a small business it's stupid not to play the airline game.
