San Pietro lacks how old church usually feel (which is weird because it IS older than many churches, but it has been maintained as new with all the money the Vatican gets).
San Luigi Dei Francesi was way more striking for me.

Also, the Vatican museum obviously has iconic painting, but:
1 for the Sistine chapel they push you. Also we were not allowed to take photos of it, idk if it changed since then.
2 the museum also has A LOT of turds. Like the worst acrylic paintings of Salvator Dali. I hate Dali anyways, fucking hack.

It's not as well curated as the Uffizi or the Louvre.

I went 20 years ago. I mainly remember the ripoff prices for bottles of water outside the museum (4 euro in 2003). I also remember the art was unexpectedly very nice, but censored which was kinda silly (no nudity allowed). And the sistine chapel was super disappointing, and you see it at the very end. If you just think of it as an art museum it's perfectly pleasant.

there's also a semi-private night tour, but apparently it's pretty similar to the morning one, though without the rising sun / morning light, which makes the morning tour so special

sometimes there are "tours" for the vatican library

I didn't have enough time for the museums but did visit St Peter's and climbed the dome.
It was absolutely worth it even as a 99% atheist. The scale of that building is impossible to convey in pictures, the statues and general ornate details are insane.

Watch out for the gangs of Africans robbing, raping and murdering. The poor invited them all to invade Italy and says its your duty to submit.

It is immense and jaw dropping, but to get the best out of your stay, do a guided tour.

I'm certain you will always remember it, it has to be one of the most aww inspiring places in the world.

It's definitely worth seeing, just from an art, history, cultural perspective. Much like Amritsar, Mecca, Jerusalem.

And pro tip, because a billion religeous tourists built all the infrastructure you can just drop in some time none of them, or all of them will be there, and you're more likely to see the pope or meet a cardinal on a business day at the Vatican then in tourist week, the locals and clergy must also plan their affairs around the mass religeous tourism. They actually really like spending time with people who won't ask them a million stupid bible questions.

St. Peter's is stunning and awe inspiring. If you are into history/art, the museum is great, it would be boring if that does not interest you. If you do the museum, book an evening tour... costs more, but worth it as it will be crowded but WAY less si than during the day.

The pope is a demon you should avoid the Vatican if you are Christian

As a non-believer, I would never skip the Vatican on a trip to Rome. The museum is great (albeit extremely crowded as others have said), and St. Peter's is one the most impressive man-made structures I've ever been in. If you're not a fat fuck, make sure to get tickets to go to the top of the Basilica. You get a great view looking down into the interior of the church and also a great view of Vatican City and Rome from the top. If you have time, Castel Sant'Angelo nearby is a good stop as well for some additional Papal history (as well as its roots in the Roman Empire).
