Heading there 11-21 January with my wife, our 2yr old, and our 4yr old. Any recommendations on things to do or things to avoid, where to stay, and how long to stay there? We'll be renting a SUV and bringing car seats. I speak enough Spanish to get around. We'll probably stay in a hotel in San Salvador for 2 nights and Air BnBs the rest of the time, then a hotel near the airport the night before our flight. My 4yr old likes animals (any kind) and my 2yr old likes dinosaurs and heavy machinery. Should we bother with a stroller at all? Or just backpack child carriers? It'd be nice to have somewhere for them to sleep during mealtimes and such but they can sort of do that in the rigid frame hiking carriers we have.

We did 2 weeks in Spain with just our then-2yr old and everyone had fun. We just took it slow and were realistic about what and how much we'd be able to do.

Theres a botanical garden in the capital thats nice you can see some weird animals there. And the national library is nice. Otherwise its still a boring shithole of a city

Somehow I completely missed that. We'll do that and the library. We'll probably just be in San Salvador 1 full day because as you said it didn't look like there's much to see there.

Theres also a few markets a block or two from the library your wife may enjoy, a bit sketchy but probably safe worth 30 minutes to hurriedly walk thru past the locals. I stayed at hotel Serena San Benito which had a fabulous choice of breakfasts the best i had in 6 months south of the border one of the choices was avocado toast. Fantastic!
