I do not get the obsession tourists have with Fukuoka. It's a soulless mid tier city that's jam packed with tourists at all times. And all they do is shop and haul around huge ass suitcases of made in China shit that's somehow great because it's sold in Japan. It's not a bad city. It's fine if you're born there and grow up there. But it'd be like dreaming of one day visiting Columbus, Ohio and moving there.

i lived in shanghai and it is good but no the best place. a mistake is going to nanjing road and the bund. if you are a tourist you have to go there but if you live there you have no reason to go there on a day when it will be busy. i've been on the Bund when it was empty and it is cool. in the morning, in the afternoon and in the evening for the light show. it's cool but you don't want to be there when it crowded, just like you don't want to be on nanjing road when it is split into two different rows of direction for crowd safety.
the side alleys are like what most of shanghai is like. the streets above and below nanjing road are much better and much more "shanghai' and mich more "china". i was almost stabbed on beijing lu after dark, late at night. i was lucky.
i've also spent 3 months in seoul and shanghai is better in every way. i was only in fukuoka for a few days to catch the ferry and it was so so, just japan but i won't blame it, i will accept responsibility for not finding things to do.

Shanghai is indeed overrated but the architecture is interesting to see. I hated the vibes of "old China" that you feel there, it's just a bad culture. I like the more modern China like in Shenzhen. It f eels very livable, it's interesting to see a country growing so fast, and young Chinese people are fun. On the other hand you definitely see that a lot of it is built just for show and it's not "real", but so what, they are still in the middle of actually becoming developed and this growth is what is exciting.

I don't really get the comparison with Seoul, but I found Seoul very genuine in a sense. It doesn't try to pretend to be something it's not, it's just a really fun place that's kinda rough around the edges and you can see that it was hastily built on top of a third-world country 40 years ago, but it gives it a lot of character. (Koreans are a different story, definitely not genuine in all ways, but ultimately quite honest and very fun.) There is not much to see in Seoul for a tourist but it seems like a nice place to live.

As a tourist destination, Shanghai is worth visiting at least once. But if it’s about living, I’d rather choose Taipei.

In Taipei, there are few high-rise buildings, and the buildings feel old.
Compared to Shanghai, it might seem shabby.

However, it is closer to the standards of the Western world.
People are kind. And it became civilized.
If you’re familiar with Japan, you’ll like Taipei too.

you can be in the wrong place at the wrong time anywhere. most people will never encounter a xinjiangren in china, much less two of them on a dark street. it was bad luck and i don't consider it indicitive of shanghai. i've almost been stabbed in many cities. almost got beaten up in busan so korea isn't any different.

really the worst thing about shanghai is the other expats. because you are around so many, there are always people around who you'd never choose to interact with if you were in your own country. social groups merge and you end up spending a lot of time around people who are dicks. not the case so much in other places where both the experience is a little more inconvenient and where there are less expats & foreign students. beijing was more socially segregated when i lived there.
