I'm going to stay with some friends in NYC soon. Should be there for at least a week. I have never been to the USA before. Any recommendations?Generally when travelling I like to keep things spontaneous. See historic places, or wander about and enjoy bars, perhaps get some conversations with strangers.I also want to avoid basketball people in their native habitat, is it true that the subway is generally not safe?

>>2910897I've lived in New York for 15 years. I've been blackout drunk in most parts of Manhattan and West/Downtown Brooklyn and have never felt unsafe. The subway is dirty and has regular delays, but it runs 24 hours and is the fastest way to get around. Occasionally you'll encounter crazies or bums, but just stare straight ahead or switch train cars at the next stop. There are plenty of great music venues and comedy clubs that aren't super expensive (besides drinks). Central Park is great. I used to go and read at Cleopatra's Needle just about every week. The Met, the MoMA, Nautral History Museum, and Whitney are all worth going to. The Staten Island ferry is free and the cable car to Roosevelt Island is $3 - both give you great views of the city. Skip Manhattan Chinatown and go to Flushing's Main St. and eat somewhere with no whites - it's basically China. Avoid the dollar spots and get a good slice of pizza somewhere in Brooklyn. Most good bars stay open until 4 AM so stay out late and get a sandwich while walking back. Most "New Yorkers" you'll encounter aren't actually from there, so most people are generally friendly. It's the city government workers that are natives and generally assholes.
