Each time I returned to Thailand, I tired of the food (and weed) more quickly. If you want to eat (or smoke) better quality, the price goes way up. Rooms are also going up in price; sub $15 bargains are becoming ever harder to find anywhere close to town. Crashing birthrates mean that the streets are losing their youthful cheer; everyone is so old and grave-mannered now. There has been so much improvement in parks, sidewalks, roads etc, but life is becoming more sheltered and modernized. Everyone is impatiently driving around, while life is increasingly lived behind closed doors. Only after coming from South Asia did I understand what was meant by those who said Thai is being Westernized. They are increasingly detached from their traditions; Buddhist temples are everywhere, but their newly renovated appearance belies a complete lack of devotees. People give money but can't spare any time; they're all too entrapped in the wage-debt cycle to concern themselves with spiritual things. Courtesies are pro forma, not genuine. Go back the second or third time, and the initial welcome is absent. You are just another 100 baht note in the till.
