I'm at my wit's end. I've been living abroad for years. I barely ever go back to the US. My current bank account is linked to my dad's cell number, but his dementia is getting worse, and along with the time difference, communication with him is getting progressively difficult. Apparently you can't set up a Tello number if you are outside of the States. I have a google number, but that wouldn't be secure to use for 2FA and banks wouldn't use it anyway. I have no idea what to do. Other services that provide a US number will kick you off of you are outside of the country for x amount of days. Have any Americans found a workaround that doesn't require being in the US to set-up the initial number? I use airalo for my esim data which works great in any country I'm in (although iffy at times in Japan for some reason), but it doesn't provide a US number

Has anyone had luck with saily numbers working with their banks?
>>
Google Fi, the 20/mo plan works perfect. Can take SMS's on my PC tablet/etc as a backup to my phone. The only thing it stops after 6 months is the data so you'll need a data sim, but you're number is always active
>>

Talkatone worked a long time for me, but then it started demanding a subscription to receive messages from short codes. It also blocks usage from a non US IP at random. Sometimes it works weeks after arriving overseas, then I open the app and it is logged out. Not possible to log in from a non US IP.

Schwab allows foreign numbers to be added and also allows verification through the app.

If you have a permanent overseas number you could use that. Maybe bank dependent but mine never had an issue with it
>>
>>2911518
Wouldn't the numbers change each month or if you forgot to buy after it expired? It's super expensive if you want to use long term.
>>
>>2911551
Google fi or just pay the shekels and port your number to Google voice forever. Its what I did as an American living now in china two years
>>
What does 2FA have to do with phone numbers?
>>
>>2914708
They always require you to input a one time password sent to your phone number on file to "make sure it's you". Used to be they offered email verification, but then all banks switched to phone/app verification only.
>>
>>2914708
so much banking and other bullshit requires it. is rough overseas, especially if you are away for quite a while
>>

I already gave the hack. $20 and port your phone number to Google voice. Works for me in china I just need to have on my VPN if doing anything that might get flagged
>>
>>2914793
What US carrier are you using?
>>
>>2911504
Nope, you actually can set up tello number outside of the us
Use a VPN, maybe a location spoofer, I don't think I used a location spoofer though.
I did it last November when I needed one for something. I still have the number too. Which is unfortunate ecause I never use it and it cost 7 dollars a month and because I had to use my sister's phone (mine didn't have esim) whenever I remember I should get rid of it, she's not around. Guess I should do that now

But I don't know maybe one day I'll need a separate American phone number again.
>>
>>2914706
Problem with that is google voice can deactivate randomly especially if you don't use it consistently. Fi is 20 a month, which if you're getting mad over for 2fa while abroad is a nothing burger.
>>
>>2915051
>Fi is 20 a month, which if you're getting mad over for 2fa while abroad is a nothing burger.
that's substantial. cost the same as flying back to the US once every two or three years or so
>>
>>2914809
I was using T-Mobile before, ported my number. No problem.
>>2915051
Ive been here in china over a year now problem with it. Again, if you port it over its now a permanent google voice number you own. It doesnt get refreshed or changed each year
>>
>>2915063
240 dollars is flying back to the USA from Asia/Europe? fucking where?
>>2915163
Yeah that's cool, but I'd rather not risk it. It's 20 dollars and if I pop back to the USA once a year(which I tend to do anyways) I get data instantly. Besides who here doesn't work abroad and get a like 50-100/mo cell stipend?
>>
>>2915163
>f you port it over its now a permanent google voice number you own
Also where are you getting this? It's only kept if you get 1 text message every 90 days. I get that's a long time to not get a text, but it's not perm anywhere I can find.
>>
>>2915193
>20 x 36 is 240
the absolute state of wfh tards
>>
>>2915197
I was going yearly, my bad inb4 minor mistake I win kek shit. I often go back to the USA or at least Hawaii once a year. Still the point is 20/mo for having all your 2FA txt shit for banks/investments/normal job shit/family+friends/taxes and data when I go back to the USA secured that won't be changed due to inactivity is worth it. If you're that stingy with money maybe traveling isn't for you.
>>
>>2915256
if you're that retarded with money maybe the wagecage is for you
>>
>>2915284
20/mo dollars for secure access for 2FA to you financial portfolio, friends, family, no "UwU we updooted our ToS you need google voice to be accessed in the USA to ermmmm fight bots :)" or possible shit happening? Yeah it's a wise compromise, we are talking what 70c a day? Worth it, only a turdworlder or NEET would look at 20/mo and the value/security it provides and go "whoa 20 hekking dollars?"

>wagecage
I never understood this insult on a board where most people are probably working abroad anyways.
>>
>>2915288
only a wagey would donate 240 a year and get nothing in return and be happy. your boss lets you tab out to 4chan? or it's one of your two days off? either way i'm going outside. later, loser
>>
>>2915292
240/yr for security to my number, consistency on my number for contacts, voicemail, data when I go back to the USA. Yeah it's a no brainer.
>get nothing in return and be happy
Weird I seem to get texting, calling, and data. W/E, I have a cell stipend anyways of 100/mo so lol, most people working in tech have that.
>your boss lets you tab out to 4chan
Yeah he doesn't care I am project based, a laptop is an end terminal not the main production machine. This is basic shit. Most my coworkers have gaming laptops because we have to watch upgrades and he wants us all at a PC that can handle everything.
>either way i'm going outside. later, loser
Guess I struck a nerve, most people don't get offended that easily
>>
>>2915195
??
Its a permanent number attached to my Google voice. Who would pay $20 for a number they could lose forever?? >>2915193
If youre traveling its no issue what so ever. If youre living long term and need special solutions to access foreign bank accounts thats a different story and I offered the easy solution
>>
>>2915541
You have to receive texts ever 90 days to keep it active anon. It's not perm.
>>
>>2914751
>>2914756
Haven't they heard of TOTP? Nobody uses text messages for 2FA anymore. It's technologically backwards and highly insecure.
>>
>>2915544
Text is a good backup, my retirement fund is 2fa same with my recovery shit. Sure I have an authenticator app but I still need a us number to login initially.
>>
>>2915543
Do you have a better solution for long term expats to access 2fa? No? Okay.
>>
>>2915553
Yeah 20/mo for google fi? read the fucking thread
>>
>>2915560
I did read the thread and wonder if its brain damage or you're just born that way. You keep shilling google fi. Why would anyone pay $20 a month for it? Are you stupid? Anon never goes back to usa and hes been overseas for years. He pays $20 once and uses the cheaper more reliable local service.
>>
>>2914751
>Used to be they offered email verification, but then all banks switched to phone/app verification only.
my credit union still does email. what fucks you is some credit cards dont ship overseas, and they all expire eventually. and app verification is easy and reliable if you have iphone. if you have android and you lose or break it you're kind of fucked though
>>
Are you in Japan? Fly to Guam and get a number
