Okay, so the reason I made this thread’s edition for a Chinese indie band (Hiperson is from Chengdu) is because I am once again asking what the current music scene is like in China.

Are some cities better for certain genres/scenes than others?

I’m talking punk, metal, emo, indie, prog rock, hardcore, etc.

i'd get rednote/小红书 and search for keywords and cities and ask in a comment on things you find. or ask there what chinese sites/social media profile to look at.
at best here you will get obvious statement like the big cities have scenes and the cities with lots of students have scenes: chengdu, beijing, shanghai, wuhan etc. you need to get actual chinese to point you in the way.

I'm South Asian and I found China to be incredibly unwelcoming. I studied there for about 6 years. As a student I had no right to work in the country, so I was quite poor. There is almost no path it permanent residence or citizenship for nonChinese too.
Yes most Chinese think I am African or Italian. Once I tell them through a translator I am from India their demeanor towards me almost always changes. I've tried getting just regular massages, and they will always tell me they are full and have no time. How is that even possible?
The only friends I made in Chinese were other Indians or the occasional white dude.
Every time I would approach someone in a night club they would always just tell me they were busy, even if I wanted to just talk. Very unwelcoming and unfriendly. I'm thinking anyone who says something positive about China is a bot or Chinese themselves.

Yep. One additional note is that scene music tend to operate in circles. Once you know one, and have their info you can use this to see similar bands or you can try and identify popular venues that music is played. Livehouse are pretty popular so there definitely a market for it. Schoolpub in beijing is one such place with pretty good live rock music. It will never be super popular though because its a bitch to make a good sounding song with lyrics in chinese due to the tonal system.

how difficult is it to get tickets for the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square on a Saturday / Sunday in late October?
some people have reported that the foreign ticket office even didn't have any and online were sold minutes after the 7 day window opened
those were mostly during summer and not late October (aka shoulder season)
