can confirm. Also felt the same when I was there a couple of years ago. There was a great bar scene in and around as well. People were easy to talk to and there was lots to do. There is loads of character to a lot of the buildings and the parks are excellent.

I only went to the tourist zone, and yes this was 20 years ago but I remember it being kinda run down and dirty and the gay district being sort of disappointing. Any place that receives such normie glowing reviews I am suspicious of.

I had the same experience. I’m HIV+ and SF is one of the most + accepting and welcoming places I’ve ever been. The gay scene is legit there. I even met a few chasers and managed to give one a gift (he massaged me a few months later to let me know). IMHO, skip the gay bars and go straight to the sex clubs, you wont regret it.

During covid, there were so many homeless people there that people started calling it San Franshitsco because of them shitting everywhere, it got so bad that businesses in the downtown area started closing because no one wanted to shop surrounded by feces and homeless people. I actually think they shouldn't have housing they should have designated outdoor camping areas specifically for the unhoused with services on site, food, bathrooms, showers - people are going to have schizophrenia anyways and there's no cure and it would be way more humane than locking them up or drugging them. I think the biggest focus should be on hygiene and sanitation (and noise control). The only rule is they cannot be violent towards others, or make tons of noise.

But yeah, as someone who grew up in a big city, it is very weird how anti-public toilet America is. I usually just pee on the side of the road on road trips.

I lived in SF for 14 months right before covid. If you park your car for 5 minutes with anything visible inside, someone will smash your window about 90 percent of the time. There were streets where hundreds of homeless people camped long term. Drug addicts would wander up and down the streets. You would see shit all over the place.

With that said, San Francisco does have some really beautiful areas. You could cross the bridge into Marin County and all the problems were non-existent. Here's my list of the good stuff to do: rent bikes on Angel Island, hike Muir Woods, raft the Russian river in Healdsburg, rent bikes at the Presidio and ride across the Golden gate bridge, Hike from Muir beach to the Pirates Cove, go to Alcatraz, hike the Cataract trail up Mount Tam.

Go midweek in September or October. It's significantly less crowded. The valley is paved, but the pavement ends a mile in right at the Bootjack trail. You can hike up the mountain past the waterfalls and you'll see maybe 5 or 6 people on the trails. That's a pretty strenuous hike though to the top. It gains like 2800 feet. I usually turn around 5 miles in at O’Rourke’s Bench. Hard to beat that view. The easier way is to just drive up there.

If anyone is actually going to SF, here are my 3 food recommendations, Jijime. It's a really good Korean place. They serve these big ass skillets with meat, fresh veggies and crispy rice.

Tacolicious in the Mission District. You will not drink a better margarita in SF. They get mixed reviews because it's expensive for a taco joint. But the food is flawless.

Tommy's Joynt. Homestyle cooking. Prime rib, corn beef, roast beef, mashed potatoes. That was my favorite spot in town. Girl's always hate it because it looks dingy inside.
