The typical cost for an ayahuasca retreat in Peru is $1000. The experience is much more life-changing than smoking or vaing DMT because it lasts so long, with multiple doses being administered over the course of the weeklong session. Most "retreats" are funded by foreign capital, which leaves very little to trickle down to the handful of native "shamans" - sometimes US citizens in a sham getup - who go through a pantomime of the traditional ayahuasca rituals because that's what tourists want to experience. They prefer foreign customers because A) they pay 10x more and B) they don't have demonic black magic powers like the locals do, gringo life energy is weak and easily controlled. He warned me not to get involved with that guy. I'll be going to Peru in a month, but as a solo traveler I'm definitely not gonna fall for any lofty promises of healing and enlightenment. It's $5 worth of jungle herbs described as an "evil potion" by Catholic friars dressed up into an extravagant "ceremony" for which you are expected to pay huge sums of money to join.
