There exists programs called Birthright Israel, which give ethnic Jews worldwide a free 10-day trip to Israel to connect with Judaism. I'm not Jewish religiously (Catholic) but my mom's mom is Jewish so I qualify for a free trip.Should I do it just for the free vacation? The cutoff is 27 and I'm 25 right now, so I'd have to do it in the next year-and-a-half and I'm not exactly sure how safe it will be in that period. Btw for my background I've never been outside the US and Canada and only speak English, so I'm definitely not experienced when it comes to international travel.

I recommend staying on a few nights at the end on your own if you can afford it - you won't have much free time on the trip, its a traditional guided tour unless you select another option (I think they have outdoor themed trips and community service trips).It's run by like the uh modern version of the ultra orthodox - the ones who serve in the military but wear the funny clothes and women don't work anyhow funny story, did a trip nearly 10 years ago and we were at the tel aviv beach (a highlight, along with the oases at ein gedi - don't miss that) and as we were leaving one of the females in the group (it will be mostly females - I recommend going during the school-year to avoid women and teachers), left her purse at the beach and one of the group leaders turns to me and asks if the purse was from one of our group and I said I didn't know and we were both lol too stoned to care and didn't think to check the id inside, someone turned it in later that night but the girl was reduced to tears, she was annoying so I was fine with that

Not a wealthy place, except certain pockets, but certainly comfortable (don't go in the summer and consult a jewish holiday calendar so you don't accidentally book during a holiday)Don't think about it as a jewish place think about it as an experiment to improve the quality of life in third world and muslim countries. Also, I enjoyed our stay on a kibbutz. afaik, most serve breakfast and dinner in a communal cafeteria so meals are sorted and they generally have extra basic rooms for rent so if you are on a budget - consider staying some extra nights there but obviously they are farms so you won't be near a big city - the golan/tiberias was very pretty too

Also the Jews in America and the Jews in Israel are kinda distinct populations. Jews in Israel are generally poorer and more low key and a bit less neurotic.

Their designated "itinerary" is 40% literal sit down lectures about how they were holocausted 80 years ago and that means they need to pogrom and genocide the palestinians now. Another 40% is visits to the holocaust museum and getting a photo op of you kissing the wall. Then you get to do an extremely small amount of fun shit like swim in the dead sea or visit a market. Think of it less like a free vacation and more like a hostage situation that only works if you're actually there. Nothing with them is actually free. The food was dreadful too
