>Last Thread: >>2909248

>What is this thread? Why are there two generals?
/rcg/ was initially created as a way for the roller coaster enthusiasts on here to discuss all things roller coasters and theme parks. While roller coasters are the main focus of these threads (and the title of the general) there is also discussion on other theme parks, their rides, as well as the parks themselves and trip planning too. That's where /tpg/ comes in.
>Can I talk about Disney/Universal parks in this thread?
Absolutely! Disney/Universal discussion of all sorts including rides/resorts/dining/trip planning is OK.

General Rules:
1. Talk about Theme Parks and/or Rollercoasters.
2. There is no second rule.

>Fast & Furious Orlando switch track testing for 2 days
imo they wouldnt set up a temporary power supply if testing the actual track itself. Having permanent electrical supply all done and tested to then be used means they are quite far along into this ride.
Id say by January they will have only the decoration left to do.
>but F&F Hollywood took 2 years
yes and shouldnt be used as comparison. the construction crew Universal use in Orlando are clearly much more experience from the steady work

Just came from great america and everything was mid. I hope I just wasn’t in the mood tonight and I’m not getting desensitized to coasters. Maxx force used to be one of my favorites and I just wasn’t that impressed tonight despite sitting in the front and it apparently running faster this year.

It’s dependent on seat. I rode next to the middle tonight and it felt fine. A year ago I rode the outside and I remember it being kind of bad. Both seats are way better than their respective seats on Tormenta though.

Unironically the greatest theme park in the world. The only serious competitor that people have proposed to its greatness I haven't been to is DisneySea. Universal Orlando is close but Efteling still takes the cake. I wish Disney and Universal would realize that you don't need IP to achieve greatness.

I got the regular. I’m just gonna rope drop the busiest one (Conjuring). Six Flags doesn’t deserve the extra $46. They’re not even selling the tickets in person this year. Had to go to guest services to buy because they have two websites offering them and one doesn’t work.
>>

>>
>>2913982
Been standing behind these 5 girls trying to rope drop Conjuring for 45 minutes. A manager came and spoke with them for 15 minutes trying to help them get tickets on their phones. They couldn’t get it to work so he sent them to guest services. When they return the line will be over an hour. It’s like Six Flags is trying to go bankrupt.

>>
>>2913994
Yeah, the 1 whole second was enough dead air for people to yell out whatever joke they wanted. Happened almost every single time I rode. Either the employees got tired of it or someone yelled something crass. The one second isnt saving them any time so its the only possible answer for the cut.

I cannot get over how poor Six Flags is. They don’t have the money of Disney or Universal. They don’t have the soul of Dollywood or Silver Dollar City. They don’t have the passion of family owned parks like Holiday World or Knoebels. They don’t have the intimacy of small local parks. They just have poverty. Poverty as far as the eye can see - from the bad food at understaffed restaurants, to the underpaid, unmotivated staff, to the almost free entry, to the ugly visuals, to the in-park advertisements, to the shitty theming, to the incompetent leadership decisions, everything they do seems to scream “we are the worse there is”.

If I really have to get down to brass tacks about it, I think DisneySea still has it beat purely on overall quality. However, Efteling is generally a way more comfortable/relaxed experience, has way more history to it and I've been going there since I was like three years old, so it's hard to beat that kinda nostalgia. >Kennedy getting a Maurer Spike

They seem to be getting a steady stream of these for random tourist attractions. I can understand their use on boats where stalling would otherwise be frequent and a logistical nightmare but it's weird elsewhere.

Wonder if we'll ever see higher capacity ones at a big theme park, they seem ideal for a dark ride system
>>
>>2914434
>what if a park cared about coasters and nothing else.

Sounds like Thorpe Park

1 family coaster (40 year old Mack powered coaster that is somehow able to stall), a big budget dark ride that was a disaster and a a scattering of water rides. Everything else is a white knuckle ride.

The park could do with a family multi-launch coaster

Christmas Wrapping is a genuinely great choice, has the right pace for the ride.

Trans-Siberean Orchestra feels too dramatic but otherwise good

Andy Williams is a bad choice.

Should have picked "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" by Wizzard
>>
>>2914576
They've been wanting to do a Villains land for a long time. Announcement was probably rushed to try and make it a spoiler for Epic Universe but they kinda failed.
>>
>>2914561
I assume it was licensing related but when I saw this list earlier today and saw that Last Christmas by Wham wasn't on there I was thoroughly disappointed and disinterested.
Also how are they going to overlay the entire rest of the ride? I looked it up and I guess they did a Christmas overlay before but it was a really shitty custom mix nobody liked and seemingly no single other part of the ride was changed to accommodate the new setlist, so I can imagine it will be super jarring. As if Cosmic Rewind needs a longer wait time during the Christmas season...

Although on the subject of Epcot overlays I think Test Track would be prime for one. Again, as if Test Track needs a longer wait... but think about it. The forest scene can be decorated like Christmas trees with fake snow blowing, the future dome and lidar scene projections can be re-CGI'd to be snowy. The house scene can be decorated. This overlay admittedly serves zero story purpose unless you try to tie it in to winter tires and ice driving or something but you can't significantly change the ride itself to do that. Have GM go "Treat yourself with a Corvette this Christmas" at the exit or something.
>>
I don’t even know what the current music has to do with anything on Guardians. God I would kill for it to be themed to be just a modern day space mountain. No marvel quips and no irrelevant albeit quality classic tunes, just the wonders of the cosmos.

I work at a chain of about 40 warehouses across North America. My colleague was telling me about the warehouse with the worst operators she knows of. She said it was Atlanta. How was it before the IPs got added in? Or were they always there?
>>
>>2914922
I rode it before the IPs. It was almost exactly the same ride but with very dated video walls instead of the "looking for donald" ones and worse music and the finale was some Small World tier marrionettes. The current version, with the animatronics, is arguably better unless you really hate any traces of IPs but it's still only a marginal improvement.

The ride both then and now has it's charm as a hidden away Mr Toads Wild Ride style cheap attraction but it's never really been good.
>>
If they had been fucking around in Figment I’d want to knock his teeth out. Sacred ground. I don’t even want the ride to update, it should stay the way it is.
>>
>>2914813
Real talk there's usually a lot of stuff under the surface in dark rides, they run conduits and cables across the bottom and often use metal brackets to hold various things in place. Usually it's not deep, either. Kid could've gotten impaled if he'd jumped in the wrong place

The entire group might have gotten bans since they were egging him on
>>
>>2914925
I think people generally like the ride, because on the scale of how good the ride is compared to how long you typically have to wait for it, it's a pretty good investment. I think most people don't even know the ride is there.
>>
>>2914916
It’s in the top half of Epcot rides though
>>
>>2914935
You're right and its evidence that Epcot is incredibly over rated
>>
>>2914934
It was one of the reasons Epcot was so beloved by people who visited in the 90s and 00s.

You just had rides seemingly hidden all over the place, you could spend hours in the Innoventions and the various pavillions, it was just a place you felt like you were actively exploring. Now the pavillions are mostly gone and almost all the rides are now big E-tickets that aren't hidden and most of the random themes of exploration and education are now IPs.

>>2914925
Not sure why I'm surprised that the Three Caballeros part was added later but I love it. I love the movie too so I thought it was crazy when I first discovered they had a ride for it given it's not exactly popular. The movie is cultural edutainment which is exactly deserving of an Epcot world showcase ride more than literally any other ride at world showcase.
I saw a cute alt chick with a Jose Carioca ita bag once there
>>
>>2914938
Epcot is weird in that yes I think it is super overrated but also underappreciated by most people who go there. For whatever reason the worst parts of the park (the eating and drinking of overpriced garbage) are what attract people and not anything that the park once stood for. Normies do not give a fuck about Living with the land. They sleep through American Adventure. But they wait in line in the blazing sun for mostly shitty festival food and alcohol.

Yes, you missed something, you absolute muppet. EVERY OTHER THEME PARK OTHER THAN DISNEY OR UNIVERSAL. Six Flags, Cedar Fair, SeaWorld, Dollywood, Europa-Park, Phantasialand, Efteling, Liseberg, Busch Gardens… literally an entire industry outside your corporate IP bubble.

What's the evidence for it? It could happen I just don't know if any planning commission docs are public or anything like that, or if it's just wishful thinking.

I hope it is a giga because thoosies have said for years they have a "height restriction" even though they already have a ride over 300 feet.

They use facial recognition now. I saw a video where some influencer guy got banned from Universal for being a nuisance. He came back wearing a disguise, and the facial recognition saw through his sunglasses and fake mustache. And he wasn't even doing anything that time, he was just walking around and riding stuff.
>>
>>2915218

>>2915221
you are made to stay still and look directly at the camera at universal, even take off your hat. at Epic their entrance facial recognition is better since you walk through and it clears you (you have to upload a picture for your ticket). amazing technology
>>
>>2915211
>They allowed to build this so close to Kings Dominion?
Yes, unless KD paid RMC to exclude new rides of that type within a certain distance, which they will do but it's really expensive, and I don't think Six Flags is going to spend money for that

Of all the places in the World section of Epcot, it's almost entirely indoors, in the air conditioning. That's a huge plus over the rest of the World.
But the Mexico pyramid pavilion is also a fairly interesting imagineered place made to look like the town square at night, it's interesting to go in and look around. People do not have a problem with the ride because they consider it to be an extension of the whole experience anyway.
>>
>>2915227
That's not really fingerprinting, like they are not doing a police fingerprint and wouldn't even be able to recognize it's you
If you went back you could just use another finger. It's more the flock surveillance that would prevent you from coming back because they would store that

To act as a deterrent against the resale of used tickets. They generate a hash based on your fingerprint and assign it to the ticket so when its used again if the hash doesnt match they can card you and compare it to whats on file. Today it mostly serves as a humiliation ritual for parents when they keep using random fingers for each kids ticket. Theres probably a small handful of tickets a week that are denied for being resale these days. Universals used to put your photo on the annual passes 2 decades ago but I don't think a single employee ever actually compared it.

Was Rhino Rally as good as I remember it? In my memory it was peak ride, worthy of being listed alongside Jaws, Hagrid's and Monsters Unchained. Part legitimate safari ride, the Jungle Cruise skipper type elements where every ride is different based on what driver you get, audience participation with whatever kid they chose to be navigator, pretty great ride effects, a storyline and some drama about getting lost. But that was 25 years ago so maybe it was just me being a kid.

You oversold it. I visited yesterday, the theming is great and there's more animatronics in the park than any other place I've visited, but the actual thrill rides are feeble. Python is a surprisingly smooth roller coaster which mislead me into thinking it was a Vekoma, I'll be surprised if it is as the track is very smooth, interestingly the only time I've been allowed to carry my luggage onto the ride seat, on a looping coaster, as I panicked actually hung it around my neck and basically lynched myself for the first ride... thank fuck it wasn't rough. Yeah they're really generous with letting you take luggage on the rides, Baron is the only one where you can't, it seems.

Baron is the other thrill ride, its another drop coaster. Its the best-themed arguably, although Oblivion hmm... could be better, its hard to say. Having been on much taller drop coasters it didn't impress me aside from the theming.

Otherwise all other rides are clearly aimed more towards children and if I came there with a hypothetical family, it'd be great! But when you're geared towards thrills it falls far short of the other 'great' European theme parks. The fountains at the beginning did wow me, and the carnival was fun. Unfortunately Danse Macabre broke down just before I was about to ride it, boooo!... In fact that happened three times on different rides but Danse was the only one I didn't get to go on because of it.
>>
>>2915824

Its among the top for the animatronics. I think Alton Towers is better, partly for being a genuinely pretty stately home and garden, plus the rides themselves have been given a real labour of love over the years, say what you will of Merlin's other ventures. Phantasialand is now at the point where my memory is more fuzzy but that was the first time I was really wowed by a place in terms of its appearance, I imagine if I went back it'd possibly top Efteling. Europa Land is cool too but it doesn't really have the same charm as the others. Hansa Park is delightful and I love parks that are more concentrated in theming, the way the rides are integrated into it is clever.

>>2915835
>>2915839
See, I kind of see it from both angles: Ultimately a top-tier theme park does need a lot of great roller coasters, I'm there to be thrilled, thrill me! Equally, you can't really just stick a bunch of big roller coasters in a trailer park. Just look at Six Flags and Energielandia, the roller coasters are good experiences for the most part but in those bland environments they lose a lot of the wow factor they would have in a more, well... themed... theme park. I think Europa Park is as successful as it is because it has a strong combination of both great theming and great rollercoasters, its not the best at either sure but a good theme park in my eyes has a strong symbiosis between the rides and the theming - just look at Voltron, if it were stuck in Six Flags it'd just be like painted yellow, it'd be an open-air queue or something and it'd feel way more... well... meh. Efteling in a way is the best at this... if you were a kid... unfortunately its way too tame for an adult on their own.

Per coasterpedia, this isn't the first death on Goliath.
>On June 2, 2001, a 28-year-old woman died after suffering brain damage while riding Goliath. While the ride was initially closed, it reopened later that day after an inspection. The following day, an autopsy failed to find a pre-existing condition and Goliath was once again closed for investigation. The ride reopened on June 14 after OSHA investigators deemed the ride safe to operate.
>>
>>2915946
Yes Im pretty sure the guy breaking into epcot after hours and blowing his brains out with a shotgun in the imagination pavillion bathroom is also a fault of the normal operation of the park.
>>
>>2915933
>Yep, that's me. You're probably wondering how I got into this situation.
>>
>>2915947
Both today's death and the 2001 death are from riding the coaster though. I'm just nervous man, and sad I never got to ride X2. I've ridden Goliath multiple times. It's got decent theming, but the coaster itself is nothing to write home about which makes the incident so odd.

>>
>>2915952
California’s has a bigger drop but it loses a TON of speed at its MCBR (seriously probably the worst MCBR ever). Not much happens the rest of the ride but some tiny helixes, which are very intense because of their size but those would push you into your seat, not eject you. Goliath is almost all airtime besides its own helix. The ejection happened during the ending bunny hills where it still carries plenty of speed.
>>
>>2915951
The blood is just gross and freaky. I’d be more worried about having what appears to be a rather large body hitting me.
>>
>>2915925
>>2915938
Yeah that restraint is not down at all, which should mean that the ride shouldn't be able to move. I don't know if that could be overruled manually like the Smiler accident where the sensors stopped the ride because there was a train stuck in the block zone ahead but they sent the train on anyway. But I'd agree that I'd guess maintenance or mechanical failure, and I'm going to predict right now that every B&M hyper that doesn't currently have seatbelts is about to get seatbelts.

I can’t tell from the photos. Looks like he was a big guy. I’ve read B&M restraints can sometimes not full lock into position but appear to and then they’ll move (slightly open) to the next position, fully safe but freaks out riders. I wonder if something like this happened but it was in the minimum position with nothing to lock to, the sensor showed green (or whatever it does) and the ride operators are retarded because it’s SFOG. I’m just very skeptical that the restraint failed, it would be a first on a B&M
>>

>>2916000
Something like that might make sense. If anybody's going to fuck something up it would be a ride op at Over Georgia. Famously there was that coaster studios video that showed them dispatching Superman with somebody's leg out of the restraints just dangling freely. Still though if the light says it's closed it's hard to blame them for assuming it's good to go.
>>
>>2916000
>>2916004
Well the thing about those restraint sensors is that they only work in the station and most importantly, they can only show that the restraint is locked to some minimum position. It can't tell if the restraint is all the way down or just on that minimum click - that's why they don't have self-checking restraints and never will, and it's part of the operator's job.

False equivalence. Allow me to educate you.

The higher up you can go on the hierarchy of controls, the better. The first two levels are about removing the hazard. But of course no one wants to live in a world without roller coasters, so let’s move down another level.

Now we’re at engineering controls. This level is about making failure impossible. Think about how you can’t start your microwave without the door closed. That’s an engineering control. But suppose that was impossible for some reason. Now you’d need an administrative control, like a warning sign on the microwave saying “do not start if door is open”. If administrative controls sound inferior to engineering controls, it’s because they are.

It’s B&M’s job to put in engineering controls everywhere they can. An appropriate control here would have been a sensor that detects whenever either of the redundant locking mechanisms on a restraint has failed and not allowing a dispatch when that happens. B&M instead opted for administrative controls, relying on $30/hr maintenance workers to be perfect every time. It works, until it doesn’t and you have obese people falling off your rides.
>>
>>2915998
Holy shit just noticed him. Gotta be son or at least family. Total horror.

You're assigning blame before a proper investigation m8. Look at airplane crashes. It's not "plane falls out of sky, immediately sue Boeing". It's plane falls out of sky, have an investigation, send the black boxes over, give the reports anywhere from 10 days to 1000+ days (did the Chinese ever explain why that flight crashed?) and then have lawsuits. It is entirely possible the fault does not lie with B&M.

Reading mixed reports about dispatching B&Ms with unlocked restraints. The restraint in the photo appears to be fully opened and unlocked. This ride does have green lights on seats locked in the safe position but some are saying you can still dispatch it and some are saying you can’t. The ride operators at this park are probably the worst in the chain so I wouldn’t put it past them to dispatch a train where the restraint was in an unsafe position but it couldn’t have been open the whole time because this happened toward the end. Either it catastrophically failed or it was dispatched in the last possible position, which is not safe but they dispatched it anyways. And it wasn’t fully locked and had no other position to lock into.

Another false equivalence. The main difference here is that planes can't help but be flown by humans, so they are, and it's very possible the pilot just fucked up. But if the safety of the coaster you designed relies on some high schooler doing the right thing every time, YOU fucked up.

It shouldn't run if it's not clicked in. That's why even if the train has empty seats, they still have to push the lap bar down. The system isn't supposed to allow the train to dispatch if every lap bar isn't clicked.

It’s a low paid member not caring.
>>
>>2916080
The fatness makes it difficult to restrain safely while also putting excess force on the restraint itself the entire ride. The average urban youth ride operator isn't going to care enough to check if a restraint is on properly. This carelessness becomes such a routine that even if something was obviously wrong they wont even notice. They'll try to start the ride then get confused and run around like a headless chicken when it doesnt go because a whole cars restraints are still up in the air. If maintenance doesnt care you'll get negligent work thats a result of either laziness, outside pressure, or genuine retardedness from unskill low cost labor. Executives can't ban fat people because they'll lose 80% of their revenue overnight. So yes his inability to not shovel food into his disgusting gullet like an addict is the cause of his death since he was at the mercy of the careless.
>>
>>2916080
It's kinda neat that the UK is a country with a load of theme parks and the worst accident that wasn't caused by the rider didn't even result in a fatality. There are rumours that one of the reasons there isn't an RMC being built her is because their restraints don't meet UK safety requirements.

Wonder if we'll see restraints redesigned. Possibly just the camera angle but the Goliath restraints seem a lot less wraparound than other modern lap restraints. Just so long as we don't see those shin clamps everywhere.

Any news on how it happened?

Too fat or mechanical failure?

Also why do some articles write it happened in July already?

Where can we find the updates?
>>
>>2916145
We're probably not going to get trustworrthy updates until a preliminary inspection.

Mechanical failure would be a first as these things are supposed to be massively redundant (unless the restrain itself failed rather than the locking but that's unheard of).

Coasters aren't supposed to be able to go out with restraints "3 clicks" unlocked but six flags are known for shit workers and this is one of the oldest coasters with those kinds of restraints so it's possible it let them ignore flashing lights or there was an engineer override in place because they were too lazy to deal with some false positives.

Only things we know are

>Big guy
>completely fell out, hitting other riders
>Restraints open when back to the station
>so far no other closures for that ride/restraint type which steers away from it being a critical mechanical failure which would result in the manufacturer sending out a notice.

Unconfirmed
>clicking noises from his seat leaving the station, possibly indicating restraints could have been slipping out of being 'locked', a design flaw like that could explain how the train wasn't blocked from leaving
>people on the train tried holding onto him but big guy + shifting gs meant that was never going to happen
>people saying there were lights indicating the seat wasn't fassened (VERY unconfirmed, seems bullshit, there are thoosies who would look at things like that but the chances are miniscule)
>>
>>2916148
see >>2916094

The restraint is completely open/unlocked during the right

This should be technically impossible. A train can not dispatch with an unlocked restraint, even with 'override'

So this is the first time ever a restraint has failed

B&M is known for their bad build quality. Only thing to do is shut down all B&M coasters world-wide until they have been fixed.
>>
>>2916151
It looks like it's unlocked, but I don't think you can really tell from that picture if it's fully unlocked, or if it only went down a few clicks. It could be like some of the other accidents like this where the restraints didn't work with the guy's body type, but the sensors read it as locked.
>>
>>2916153
Bro that shit is like fully forward, aint no way that restraint was like that when the train dispatched it would literally not be possible to send a train from the station when the restraint is in a full open, or almost full open position.

The impossible has happened.

The picture part is at the end of the ride. If the restraint is open like that 90 degrees vertically up in the air it's safe to say it is in a more open position compared to upon dispatch, because a train cannot dispatch when the restraint it still pointing straight to the sky

I forgot that the clamshells were angled out when they were open. The restraint position in the ride photo doesn’t look like this to me, the bar looks more vertical. It might be locked in the first click position. Which shouldn’t have been dispatched, but if there is nothing to stop it the ride ops might have sent it because they’re terrible at this park. Or a sensor was showing green incorrectly, a former Nitro op reported this exact scenario happening once.

While we're at this discussion we might as well talk about the coaster itself. I believe it's objectively the best designed B&M hyper in North America (haven't ridden any overseas). It's not my personal favorite - I prefer Apollo's Chariot for nostalgia and the natural setting, Nitro for that view, and Goliath La Ronde for its perfectly profiled airtime hills and no MCBR - but by more objective standards I think it's the best they ever did.

What you might consider its weakness - its size - I think is actually its strength. The 175' first drop does result in a slightly slower ride, but only by a few mph. And it does mean less time spent on that drop. But that's where the drawbacks end and the benefits begin. MCBRs are buzzkills and the only way you can not have one is by having a very short ride (Candymonium) or having a shorter first drop (both Goliaths). Goliath has only one trim brake and it has it in a valley, not ascending a hill, which is the high IQ solution. This doesn’t kill the negatives for the back row. Without a MCBR it really rips into those final hills.

B&M hypers are often described as forceless compared to the Intamin hypers, but Goliath meets this with a pretty forceful helix. So it really gives you everything, except a massive first drop, but overall I’d say it’s the best design.

>It’s only two points of redundancy.
It has at least 4 ratcheting pawls in there, if it's like other B&Ms 2 are offset from the other 2 but you still have 4 individual pawls in there each of which can secure a rider

>>2916239
>Why the park staff let her ride them is beyond me
They have to for a lot of medical conditions, otherwise it could cause legal problems. That's why every ride has a big warning sign next to its entrance discouraging people with high blood pressure and pregnancy etc. not to board, attendants can remind them of the warning, but ultimately the park can't deny them boarding. Old people ride coasters all the time without problems though.

>>2916246
>MCBRs are buzzkills and the only way you can not have one is by having a very short ride (Candymonium) or having a shorter first drop (both Goliaths).
B&M solved this with their gigas. The intermediate block brakes just got moved all the way to the end of the ride, then they let you fly through those before hitting the 'real' brakes - to get the train in and out of the "mid course" brakes asap for the following train. With the lift speed and cycle time you still get the advantage of that additional brake without it actually being placed midway through the ride. I agree that those are a buzzkill and normally after going through them I'm like "Ok the good part of the ride is over"

>only a matter of time until one of you retards thirsting for airtime gets yourself killed and ruins it for everyone
This happened back in 2000 or 2001 at Holiday World during some ACE event. Prior to that it was a widespread practice for enthusiasts to avoid being stapled and leave the lapbar up as high as possible, sometimes just tricking the operators with various clothing. Anyway it was at night on the Raven and some enthusiast chick had hers way up, got thrown out of the ride and died. One or two of the more well-known enthusiasts of that time got called out for recording videos of themselves standing up while riding and brazenly leaving restraints too far up.

Industry started directly warning enthusiasts that they have to uphold their end of the deal by using the restraint the way it's designed to or there would be no more special events for enthusiasts. The buckaroo days of riding with lap bars nearly all the way up during coasterthons was over.

Happened on the New Texas Giant in 2013 and that coaster is still operating with lapbars. Worst that's going to happen is they'll put in seat belts somewhere
>>
>>2916279
so was this just not done as a cost cutting thing? dont other coasters like Diamondback and Orion have belts like that already?
>>
>>2916281
The manufacturer offers the option and the company chooses what they want when they order the ride. For B&M, those belts aren't for redundancy, they're indicators that the restraint is down far enough. If the belt can't get buckled, it's not down far enough and the ride shouldn't be dispatched.
>>
>>2916282
Manual redundancy is huge. Don’t discount it
>>
>>2916281
The seatbelts make the ride less fun and they shouldn't be necessary. They also slow down dispatches because the operators have an extra thing to check, thus making the line longer.

From what I’ve heard, there is no Cedar Fair, almost all the execs and full time employees from both legacy companies and the parks themselves either left or were let go. The last straw was this move “back” to Arlington and the company is full of outsiders who don’t have amusement/theme park experience. The board has been changed up too. There is just a company called Six Flags running these parks and they suck. My only hope is that there are still some remaining good people and they’ll try to spin off the good parks (the legacy CF parks) into a different company because this was not a merger of equals. CF parks weren’t perfect but every single SF park is pure garbage in comparison.

I consider obesity to be easily the biggest problem in this country full stop. Just check the number of deaths annually, it’s way more than police brutality or white supremacy or murder or whatever shit you care about. So I’m into fat rejection, the opposite of fat acceptance, and I love this idea. There have been plenty of fats that have been inspired to lose weight after doing the walk of shame. Let’s crank that up. Make obesity unbearable.
>>
>>2916291
>do they have cameras on the platform to see what happened?
They might, but I think multiple cameras in the station that record boarding riders is probably going to become standard equipment for new rides (and will happen regardless of this incident). Some rides might already have stuff like that in use.

I don't mean just a camera or two that records the entire loading dock, I mean a system with many cameras aimed at the restraints (say, 1 camera per row) that captures and stores boarding information and will combine it with facial recognition so the park can go back and look at all of that information after an incident. Obviously they'd look at the restraint prior to the incident, but also look at what the rider was doing while boarding other rides in the park. If the park could build an argument that the rider was habitually leaving the restraint too high (just an example), it could reduce their damages in court.

>>
>>2916311
Floater time is zero or near zero g, that makes you float in place relative to the coaster, restraints stopping you from getting away from the seats. Ejector is negative gs, you'd rise away from the seats without the restraints.

Some thoosies can sometimes get a kick out of doing well designed family coasters sitting at the back because they occasionally get pops of airtime but only have very loose lap restraints (that can have a big gap if you're next to a larger person). Big Thunder Mountain in Disneyland Paris has a splashdown dip like this that's great at the back.

Some do, but I'd wager that most of those aren't good views of the individual riders, it's like one camera near the front of the station that's mostly intended for use by park security. What I'm proposing is much more intensive, one camera for every 1 or 2 seats and retaining that recorded data for an indefinite period (until the statue of limitations for claims runs out most likely). We may start seeing coasters that have on-board full-time audio/video recording just for dealing with the aftermath of an incident.
>>

I did it, it works really well, ran out of money and had to stop which was a bitch. You genuinely don't feel like eating. You don't feel ill, you don't feel stuffed, you just don't have a drive to eat and when you do eat, you're feeling full after the first few bites.

Two downsides:

If you really enjoy eating, not wanting to eat leaves a bit of a gap in your life. You change your pattern of eating to quality not quantity though and get past this.

Worst constipation I've ever had (only one really bad incident of it mind). Genuine "no way I'm passing this concrete block, I'm going to have to dig it out in pieces".

Whatever needs to happen to remove at least Cedar Point, Knott’s and Kings Island from the chain. Probably Canada’s Wonderland, Carowinds, and Kings Dominion too and you might as well throw in Dorney and Schliterbahn to undo what’s left of the merger that should have never happened. I know they're not technically rollercoasters but seems a bit remiss to ignore some of the drop tower incidents

I'm still hovering towards a "Engineer here, we've been having issues with the sensors all day, I'll just leave the override on, make sure you press down for 3 clicks for everyone". If that is the case, I could see either a dual key setup or forced logging and recording for overrides in the future.
>>
>>2916336
Remains to be seen if there was victim misadventure involved but millions as a starting point.

Icon Park's drop tower technically had a judgement of $300m against them but the company that made it simply shut up shop and left the US. Settlements are preferable because otherwise it'll mean a decade in court and the risk the debt gets offloaded to a shell company.
>>
>>2916337
The sensors are only part of the safety system in place. They can't tell if the restraint is fully down on the rider, only that it is open or in an "other than open" position. The operators are supposed to verify the restraint is down and locked, same as any coaster, because no sensor technology exists to verify that right now.

And it wouldn't be an item maintenance would override because of a faulty sensor - they'd just fix the problem or pull the train out of service and go down to one train until it did get fixed. I don't know if you could even disable such a feature in automatic mode, the program itself is mostly off-limits to technicians and mechanics.

Maybe not but he’s still a big guy. I’d put him around a BMI of 38. I don’t know what the limits of the clamshells are, I’ve seen some big people ride Mako and Fury and Diamondback but it depends on how they carry it.

Anyways, I still don’t think catastrophic failure of the restraints is likely here. If it is, these style restraints are not as redundant and safe and thoosies have been claiming for decades. Even if shoddy maintenance is to blame (and we don’t know anything). We’ve all probably seen seats that are blocked off with bags over them and what not. >It’s designed to be safe even if it’s in the highest non-open position.
There's a minimum pull travel to get all pawls engaged on B&Ms. They arrange them in 2 sets of 2 offset so you need to hear 4 clicks to know all 4 pawls are engaged. On B&M rides with seatbelts, that's all the belt does, provide an indicator that all 4 pawls have traveled far enough to lock on to the ratchet:

https://youtu.be/ikrq045k5CM?si=hcpri0tkC-4X7yFU&t=722
>>
>>2916380
And there’s no device that counts the number of clicks? If not then B&M are confirmed retards for using these at all. Of course you’re only going to get some of the clicks sometimes. Nice foresight you dipshits.
>>
>>2916382
Nope you're the first person to ever consider that possibility. If only B&M had hired you after seeing your NoLimits designs, they wouldn't be in this position now.

Eyewitness account so could have reliability issues but they claim to have sat near the man and his restraint was making some strange clicking noises. They claimed the ride operators fixated and played around with it before dispatch. If true, there was a restraint issue. If there was a restraint issue, none of the hypers are going to be in operation any time soon even if it turns out to be maintenance negligence.

This is the story from >>2916392 except it’s not the guy who fell out’s restraint. It was the rider telling the story. Having restraints unlock and relock isn’t unusual. I don’t know about B&Ms though. Some coasters it’s just a row they have to release and others it’s the whole train. It’s not unusual if they’re releasing it on purpose and then they have to check everything again.

Guessing this is a result of the Ryan the Ride Mechanic video. I think he's spitballing slightly looking for the only point of failure . I'm not sure the welds he poiints out take that much load and they're really chunky heavy duty welds that would have to fail in multiple spots. This failing without it being a worldwide shut it down on B&Ms seems unlikely

Would a simpler point of failure be a faulty restraint sensor that gave the green light without the 3 clicks?

I don't know the source of the problem and don't want to jump to conclusions but it is true that many components get taken apart, cleaned, inspected, and sent out for NDT each off-season, and usually it's included checking welded connections. I wonder if the company will finally back off using the same handful of names over and over? Cedar Fair was doing the same thing before the merger. Like an average person hearing "Somebody died on Goliath and Six Flags," it could apply to half a dozen SF parks instead of just one if they were uniquely named.

>>2916674
Not him

I know sometime in the last few years SF has purchased both the Dallas and Atlanta parks outright for hundreds of millions of dollars each. Prior to that, they were owned by a group of investors and operated by Six Flags. Although they were expensive purchases, they were one-time buys so it might make some of that seem worse than it is. Thoosies who think X2 and Goliath are going to cost SF billions of dollars are mistaken.

It’s not though. The angle only looks a little higher than that of the restraint of the other fat sitting on the other side of the same row >>2916155 Pic related is what fully open looks like.

If it turns out it was his fault, I think there may have be a clue in the fact that it was a thoosie. Thoosies are a minority of ridership, possibly a small minority, so if someone was going to get ejected riding normally, it was unlikely to be a thoosie. It should have been even less likely considering a thoosie would be more likely to know if something was wrong with the restraint… except for one thing - a thoosie would also be more likely to use creative ways to get more space with the restraint.

I think his restraint was locked in the ride photo position out of the station and he made it through most of the ride until the helix forced him sideways. The helix is pretty unique to this particular ride. This supports the eyewitness accounts that he was “levitating” sideways (the helix) flew up and down three times (the final three bunny hills) and then was ejected during the final turn (partially caught on photo). I don’t think it was maintenance negligence or ride operator negligence and I don’t think the restraint failed because it’s not in the fully open position in the photo. As to why it would be allowed to dispatch in an unsafe position, it wouldn’t be the first time apparently Nitro had a sensor fault like that before. Also he’s definitely a big obese guy and everybody saying “he’s not that big” and “not obese” has a really warped perspective on what a normal body type is

Ok you semantic retard. Refer to the guy you quoted. The restraint either never clicked in to an acceptable level or outright catastrophically failed.
There is no "I am a thoosie and I am going to sneak this restraint out of the station a little loose" to this extent. Ops would have had to override the sensor to dispatch, and you guys joke but I don't think they are THAT negligent.

>angle only looks a little higher than that of the restraint of the other fat sitting on the other side of the same row
Not even remotely fucking close. You can find footage of other fatties (picrel even fatter than the victim) riding and the restraint never ever allows for nearly that much wiggle room.
>>
>>2916684

What information can an individual seat harness sensor really tell you?
> - It usually does not measure the position of the harness - only that it is fully unlocked, or in an "other than unlocked" position (with rare exceptions like B&M flyers and other niche rides that have way more sensors on the trains)
> - The sensor cannot determine if the restraint is fully engaged against the rider or not
> - The sensor cannot establish whether a seat has someone in it or not
> - The sensor cannot determine if the restraint pawls are actually latched, only that the mechanical component or flag either is or isn't being detected by its proximity sensor. In other words, the computer doesn't know if the locking pawls are on their ratchet teeth or not, but it is presumed they are because the restraint moved past a certain position and the proximity limit is no longer sensing its flag. If none of the pawls latched, the harness, which is sprung, would move into the 'full unlocked" position and re-flag its sensor, indicated an unlocked restraint

Anyone got anything else about them to know?
>>
>>2915971

No it hasn’t. We need a ride photo from Goliath from one of these fatties sitting in that same seat position to rule it out for sure. The restraint is definitely not wide open or it would be angled backwards. It could be that it’s open and the forces are causing it to be partially closed but we don’t know that either.

On a side note, ai see that Shambhala and Silver Star were both open again today and neither of them have seat belts.

I've never been on one of these hybrid types or that much of any pure wooden coasters so I'm kind of at a loss on how it compares to similar coasters. >>2916713
The best part of Gwazi IMO is the death roll, officially the barrel roll down drop. It’s not the only BRDD by RMC (Twisted Cyclone, Wind Chaser and Twisted Timbers also have one), but the death roll is different because it’s much bigger and the train is going much faster into it. WC and TT use their BRDD as the first drop, so the train enters them slowly, and they’re half the size of Gwazi. TC enters its BRDD with some speed but it’s also half the size of Gwazi. The death roll might be my single favorite element. POVs don’t do it justice.

Gwazi is also the best RMC I know of for lateral airtime. It has many hills that turn you sideways. I found this to be an acquired taste but now I like it over normal airtime.

Other than that, it’s one of just three hyper RMCs and its stall is really long.
>>
>>2916720

>>
>>2916724
I refuse to watch POVs for rides I haven’t ridden, but its European comp is Zadra, one of the other two RMC hypers (the other is Steel Vengeance). Many people say it’s better than Gwazi. Europe also has a few other RMCs that aren’t rated quite as well but are still loved.

Holy TRVKE

The reason why B&M never made seatbelts mandatory on these rides is because they reasoned that since a rider could detach it at any point in the ride cycle, it could not be relied upon as a redundant safety device.

That's why the B&Ms that do have seatbelts like stand-ups and inverts do not rely on them as a safety back up. They are only indicators so the crew will know the restraint is at its minimum engagement. If the belt won't buckle, the harness isn't down far enough and those pawls aren't all locked in. Those seatbelts are doing the same job as the restraint position sensors on their other coasters. They're only there to make sure the restraint has traveled far enough that all of the pawls in the locking device should be engaged.
>>
>>2916769
>nearly
I can think of one obese urban fellow who would still be alive if the fabric had been there.
>>
>>2916771
It’s more of a PR question than an engineering question. If the GP demands seatbelts and Six Flags thinks attendance will decline without them, there will be seat belts, regardless of what the engineers say.
>>
>>2916775
That's a great point I hadn't considered

One thing they'll have to weigh is the time belts add to checking restraints, and SF executives have to know how atrocious their operations already are. Probably won't change their manpower budgeting situation though.
>>
>>2916778
Yeah its a thing
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Security_theater

I can’t imagine seatbelts would slow capacity quite that much. The B&M hyper seatbelts are pretty easy. There’s nothing to tighten like there is with RMC or PTC seatbelts, so they’re easy both to put on and check. And since there are rarely mandatory lockers (Fury being an exception), it’s not like B&M hyper capacity is that great anyway. Mako struggles to hit 700 riders an hour without seatbelts. There’s not much capacity to ruin in the first place.

What I’m worried about is seatbelts on other models due to public pressure. Velocicoaster can do 30 second dispatches, that would not be the case with seatbelts. Bakunawa will have bad capacity already, seatbelts are the last thing it needs.

Atlantis at lotte world has extremely abysmal dispatch times because they do a whole song and dance routine of checking both the seat belt restraint and the lap bar. It almost feels like they arent even looking half the time and are just going through the motions. Hitting fat tourist with the 38 inch waist limit at the loading platform after waiting an hour in the sun must bring some kind of joy to the workers.

I remember Steeplechase in the 90s where you barely had a seat (basically on a carousel horse with a bit of a saddle) and just a very loose, worn seatbelt. You felt you had to hold on or you'd falloff

I think the Wooden wild mouse had even less, you were sat like in an old log flume. Now that was a "am I going to die here?" coaster. Glad that Australia is keeping the last of its kind running and recently refurbed it.

Every time there is an accident like this safety standards just go up and rides become safer as a whole than they were before. That’s objectively a good thing. However, does shit like this stifle innovation and “fun” like other anons were saying earlier in the thread. Not to mention, will it makes rides more expensive, mainly through increased operating costs, leading to fewer new rollercoasters getting built and more getting retired?

What about the seatbelts on the legacy Cedar Fair hyper? Diamondback didn’t even debut with them, they added them later. My only issue with them is they seem a little loose and you can buckle them with a giant loose area before they retract but to be honest I never paid attention if they tightened. I’m pretty sure these are not like comfort collars; if they couldn’t hold a rider in the event of restraint failure, then it would have been pointless to install them

They're designed to be run hard, whether they're run well or like crap is up to the park. They have high throughput with a suitable crew.

I've watched some POVs of Japanese coasters and sometimes it's the same story there too, insanely slow dispatches. The 4D there (can't remember its weird name) is particularly bad.

>>2916844
Technically it's safe to ride B&M flyers if your legs are out of the harness, they took that possibility into consideration during the design process and included people with their legs out in the reach envelope. They could get banged around bruised and it's definitely an operational violation, but still not a danger to the rider.

>>2916857
They're probably not considered safety devices then; as with other B&Ms with belts, I bet they're used as a position indicator.

>They're designed to be run hard, whether they're run well or like crap is up to the park. They have high throughput with a suitable crew.
The only part of B&M that points to greater throughput than other manufacturers is the large trains. Besides that, there’s nothing about them that is particularly fast. Trains that are obviously designed for fast throughput include Velocicoaster and Stardust Racers. No seatbelt and no middle seat for the operators to check, just a lapbar. B&Ms with seatbelts could never compete.
>>
>>2916879
What’s Diamondback’s dispatch time? I was there a few weeks ago and it’s gotta be at least 90 seconds. That would be a max of 1,280 riders per hour, worse than even Hagrid’s.
>>
>>2916883
>Besides that, there’s nothing about them that is particularly fast.
Correct, that's up to the park. But they are designed to be run hard and continuously hit whatever minimum interval is specified, and their max hourly throughputs are high because of their 4-abreast seating.
>>
>>2916883
Depends on the B&M. Mako has shorter trains for example. Even with shitty ops it probably gets closer to its hourly capacity than Velocicoaster. Intamin are notorious liars when it comes to capacity and VC probably doesn’t exceed 1k riders an hour most days despite supposedly being capable of much more. Unlike most Disney and Universal high capacity coasters, there is no MCBR. Stardust doesn't count because it’s two coasters.
>>
>>2916885
Hagrid’s ain’t meeting that theoretical capacity. If it did the line wouldn’t be so long. Intamin lies about their capacity. Also more people have died on Intamin rides than any other manufacturer,
>>
>>2916888
Yes Intamin is notorious for exaggerating their throughput, makes me wonder how they come up with it. Surely parks have been wise to it for a long time

Intamin got such a bad rep that even one of their devoted customers, Cedar Fair, stopped ordering new rides from them

>14 people/train
>train every 90 seconds
>>
>>2916888
>Hagrid’s ain’t meeting that theoretical capacity. If it did the line wouldn’t be so long.
That doesn’t follow. Line length not only a function of ride capacity. It also depends on the effective arrival rate, which depends on balking probability, aka at what wait time do guests consider a line not worth the wait. Which for Hagrid’s is really fucking high because it’s one of the best rides in the world.
>>
>>2916895
Hagrid’s dispatches way faster than that. Those trains don’t even stop in the station. I was thinking about 30 second dispatches from my experience and this video seems to confirm that.
https://youtu.be/Uw5NOmrHb5Y
If they can keep that up that’s 1,680 guests per hour. If they miss by even 20% its still 1,350 an hour.
>>
>>2916887
>VC probably doesn’t exceed 1k riders an hour most days
Where are you getting this? 1,000 per hour would be 42 trains an hour which would be 86 second dispatches. Anyone who’s been on it knows those trains aren’t sitting there for almost a minute and a half before dispatching. 45-50 seconds is their usual and they can do as quick as 30 seconds.
>Unlike most Disney and Universal high capacity coasters, there is no MCBR
The launch serves this function. No coasters will ever be running on the same half of the ride.
>Stardust doesn't count because it’s two coasters.
And both slaughter every B&M in individual capacity.
>>
>>2916897
yeah ive seen the conveyor belt station. its a good idea but train doesnt hold much. The ride is about 3 minutes. dispatching every 30 seconds would be possible then
>>
>>2916886
>But they are designed to be run hard and continuously hit whatever minimum interval is specified
B&M sets the minimum interval, so you’re really just saying they’re not lying. Which I agree they’re probably not.
>their max hourly throughputs are high because of their 4-abreast seating
Their theoretical throughputs can be high but the actual throughput rarely approaches the theoretical because B&Ms don’t attract the crowds that would require all the measures necessary to hit the theoretical capacity. These are:
>mandatory lockers or other ways of making sure people have nothing to empty their pockets of when they approach the ride
>very well staffed operations with supervisor present
>(optional) operator on microphone yelling at people to move faster
>(optional) different unloading platform

I’ve ridden all the B&Ms in North America and the only two I recall off the top of my head that hit even those main two are Fury and Rakshasa. But the neither of those have any chance of touching Velocicoaster for two reasons:
1. Seatbelts
2. Shape of the train means extra walking for operators. Fury ops must awkwardly check the middle seat in each row, while all but 6 of Rakshasa’s seats are “middle” seats.
Fury and Rakshasa have fairly long dispatch times per rider because of this. It’s very common to see two Fury trains sitting in the brake run because the third train is taking a long time to dispatch.
>>
>>2916902
Should add running max trains to that measures list, which is at least 3. Any coaster that can’t or doesn’t run 3 trains is automatically out of any “high capacity” discussions, unless it’s an very short ride.
>>
>>2916902
>B&M sets the minimum interval
Yeah but the park can set it too, because ultimately they know about how it's going to be staffed. A park might omit an MCBR and give up 3 train capacity to save money at the cost of a higher dispatch interval, but the park's managers all know they're not going to pay for 6 or 8 people to be on the dock every shift to stroke trains out in the first place, so it's pointless addition.

>Their theoretical throughputs can be high but the actual throughput rarely approaches the theoretical
We don't really know this. It's safe to presume it seldomly hits minimum interval at Six Flags parks from their staffing practices alone. But unlike Intamin, with a reasonably competent crew you can hit intervals and make or even exceed their stated throughput (it's happened at Raging Bull with 3 trains).
>>
>>2916897
The wild mouse at cedar point doesn’t stop in the station either. It helps a little bit with capacity but there is no way Hagrid’s is getting much more than 1k riders an hour, if even that. Same with VC. Intamin and Madk rides don’t make capacity monsters. They both lie about capacity. Stardust is high capacity because it has two different tracks. Slinky Dog has garbage capacity though.
>>
>>2916876
Well that’s a lie, Cheetah Hunt was closed yesterday and apparently has been for a while
>>
>>2916759
You have it backwards. Fatties have more mass at the same speed, therefore more momentum the ride has to restrain. Imagine a heavy car vs. a light car taking a sharp turn at speed.

>>2916769
I would prefer having a belt as a secondary layer. If that was the norm on coasters I wouldn't be so scared of them. But from what I can assume, that would inflate dispatches which parks don't want and if coasters have belts I assume they are mandatory/checked and not just an extra optional preference.
>>
>>2916891
Nobody remembers that only a year ago somebody died on a Universal coaster. I just read somebody reference it and a reply said something like “what do you mean, nothing happened there”. There is also some lawsuits about people getting injured on it, obviously cash grabs but still. Not apples to oranges but the paraplegic should have never been allowed on either which means if this is an operations failure they’re both deaths from operations failures. I guess it could still be maintenance and the restraint but this seems extremely unlikely given the design of the restraint.
>>
>>2916923
A fair number of belts are installed as an option by the park. Back when Six Flags ordered 3 giant inverted boomerangs and put them in, riders complained that the initial lift was uncomfortable because most of their mass was laying directly on the shoulder harness. Six Flags put in lap belts to keep the rider's lower torso off the bottom of the shoulder harness. That added significantly to already slow cycle times though.

B&Ms use their seat belts as gauges, they're not considered a redundant safety device. Intamin uses their seat belts as a fatty filter - if you can't buckle it, Intamin thinks you're too tubby to utilize the restraint safely. So there again, it's not considered by the manufacturer to be a secondary restraint, but it is a safety device.

Every woodie I've been on had seat belts plus the restraint. Don't know if they all do, just something I've observed. But since they're all going to be made to set lengths according to the manufacturer, I think it also works as a fatty filter there too.
>>
>>2916931
The parks can't legally deny boarding for most medical conditions. They can discourage it in certain ways but they can only really deny it if you don't have enough arm and leg bits to fully utilize the restraint (info the manufacturer will provide to the park)

New info: The family member next to him was not his son and claims he fainted and was hunched over midway through the ride. The man in the same row also says he was hunched over his restraint and thought it was because he was trying to retrieve something. A person behind him thought he was trying to retrieve a phone (the phone story again although different from “reaching up” for it). Also he was not a thoosie, family member said he hadn’t rode coasters in a while because of a medical condition which prevented him from riding other coasters in the park except this. I’m not quite sure what that could be except obesity. We only see his back in the ride photo. The media tends to run older photos, sometimes years older because that’s what’s on social media. When you gain a lot of weight, people have a tendency to keep their old pre-weight photos on profiles.

I’m going back to what I said from the start, the ride was dispatched with the restraint in an unsafe 1-click position that wasn’t even fully engaged and it popped out when he passed out. It could also be he was hunched over because the restraint opened but his family member claims it didn’t open yet (but he could have been holding it closed if it did indeed fail). There is still the issue of it not being fully open in the ride photo, it’s partially closed or it would be angled all the way out. Candymonium is opening today as per Hershey. The European hypers never closed. Mako and Apollo’s chariot are still closed. SF is running inspections on Nitro and possibly others but this is probably for legal reasons. I do not think the restraint failed.
>>
>>2917058
Also, the relative said he tried to ride other rides in the park and was denied on them except for this. I highly doubt he was denied it after explaining his medical history to a teenage Atlanta “youth” ride attendant. He was denied because he was too big too big to ride. Tyre Sampson 2.0 and the “denied from other rides” story has been circulating since the incident. What does the minimum locking position look like? Does it look like the ride photo? I want to see some ride photos. Maybe they dispatched with 1.5 clicks and .5 fell back to 1 and he got sucked out.
>>
>>2917058
I think we have to wait for the official report and pick that apart because this kind of speculation, while interesting, still doesn't explain why he was ejected at the end of the ride and not the beginning.

Being denied of other coasters in the park because of a “medical condition” and reportedly passed out and hunched over is (mostly) new information that changes things. I’m phone posting but I found a pic of a bigger person on Nitro and the restraint pole is more vertical compared to the angled ones next to the person. I don’t think the restraint is open and eyewitnesses claiming it was doesn’t mean anything, they say that about other rides too that came back confirmed locked like the CGA drop tower incident and New Texas Giant. As for why he didn’t come out earlier, he wasn’t passed out yet and the positives push you down into the seat. I suspect it was the helix at the end that flung him out (“levitating side ways” and he got bounced around the final airtime hills, possibly already dead, before being ejected in the final intense turn
>>
>>2917068
I told you niggers it wasn’t B&Ms fault and it was another Biggie Splats but you wouldn’t listen
>>
>>2917058
>Also he was not a thoosie, family member said he hadn’t rode coasters in a while because of a medical condition
Not riding rides for awhile because of your health does not mean you are not a thoosie
>>
>>2917069
Fat people and rollercoasters do NOT mix
>>
>>2917068
All that makes sense to me. That helix is pretty intense, a lot of people grey out at that part. I'm sure if he had been conscious, he could've held himself in, and probably had before. If he hadn't been so overweight, then being passed out wouldn't have thrown him out of the ride. The combination of both things is probably what caused the accident. If this information is correct, then I'd guess that the B&M hypers that don't currently have seatbelts will get them, at least in America, and they'll be there as a measuring device, and that will solve the problem and make sure this doesn't happen again.
>>
>>2917070
He wasn’t a thoosie. He just joined a group called roller coaster enthusiasts so everybody said he was.
>>2917069
>>2917071
I suspect they’ll put seatbelts on the ones without them, but for all the people on team “restraint open”, nobody has proven it yet. There has to be a point when restrain modifications to accommodate “guests of size” is too much. You punish the majority to allow a minority to ride. The way RMC restraints come down on kids and skinnier people with all that room scares me a little. The problem is the “guests of size” which are a reoccurring theme among roller coaster ejections in recent years.
>>
>>2917073
Yep. The helix causes greyouts on this ride and other B&Ms like Raptor at Cedar Point that have them. Or Goliath at MM even though it’s not a real B&M. Where there are greyouts there are blackouts. We don’t know yet but it fits. And then it goes through 3 intense airtime hills in succession where he flew out and came back down 3 times before the die photo catches him on the final intense turn and braking. Restraint failure is still a possibility but it’s looking less and less likely
>>
>>2917076
If it didn’t fail how did he come out
>>
>>2917083
The failure in this case would be letting him ride in the first place when the lap bar couldn't close far enough to restrain him due to his weight.
>>
>>2917083
This >>2917085 and he passed out and was hunched over; his (large) body changed positions due to the forces. It is extremely unlikely that a large guest passed out and hunched over and then their restraint failed and they fell out. This is the coaster version of splat albert. The restraint is not open in the ride photo either which some of us have been saying for days. It’s a big gap but it sounds like he was a big guy if they denied him from riding all the other coasters.
>>
I never thought the restraint looked opened. People are focusing on the guy on the end but he doesn’t look fat to me. Plus angles. It’s going to turn out that it was clicked into the minimum safe position but they never tested fat people passing out and going limp while in that position. I expect seat belts will be installed in the off season. The legacy Cedar Fair hypers will reopen soon since they already have them. The United parks hypers will stop letting fat people on and convert one train at a time to seat belts. Hollywood Dream will reopen because Nips aren’t fat. If the clam shell doesn’t touch the arm rest you can’t ride, probably 4 clicks will do the trick. Good incentive to lose weight

Hershey released a statement about opening Candymonium today and it says this:

Candy is 14 years older than Goliath so its restraints don’t necessarily have the exact same design, but agreed it’s probably unlikely.
>>

Doesn’t look like part of a coaster. Reddit says flag plate but it’s much smaller and doesn’t look like a flag plate. Millennium is closed but probably out of precaution or possibly just because of the rain and wind that closed most of the rides… if it opens back up with everything else it’s a nothing burger. If it remains closed we have a problem
>>2917173
Newer you mean? Isn’t Candy the newest B&M hyper in the US?
>>
>>2917176
Yeah I meant newer. If B&M found anything truly substantial to improve since then though they probably would have retrofitted the old ones though.
>>

Where tf is the VIP lounge he's talking about?

If it came off the train it looks like some kind of unimpressively machined block that a lot of force would be up against, like that's where the catch car would butt up against the belly of the train or something to that effect. No idea though, and note holes are different sizes.

Could just be someone trying to scam the park
>>
>>2917180
It’s next to the millennium force queue. The coaster’s final overbank is right next to it. It has a roof and supposedly they found this by cabanas they have there. It doesn’t look like anything that would be part of a coaster and it’s not the flag plate, the flag plate looks like TTD’s and is L-shaped unlike this thing. Rougarou is near it and that’s closed too.
>>
>>2917185
A flag plate definitely wouldn't be that big, they're always thin too. I don't think it's a track part, either, unless perhaps they had been out there working on the track and using that piece (for whatever) during the course of their duties and forgot about it, leaving it to eventually vibrate off the track. Like it looks like a piece of scrap metal you'd use to make a jig or block something a certain way, doesn't need to be precise.

If that thing had been thrown from the train at speed it would have messed something up, even just leaving impact points in the ground. Haven't seen any other info about it though, no news site is reporting anything.

Ive seen it in this very general before with space mountain, just not this thread. Theres a lot of people out there who don't like MK space mountain and make this displeasure known by begging to empty ears to replace it with one of the other versions. Unrelated but people begging for clones and imports is how MK Pirate of the Caribbean sort of came into existence way back when, ignoring the energy crisis ruining a bunch of other plans. Of course back then making a trip to the other side of the country was a harder task then it is today and MK is basically a clone park but the bitching from the public has existed since forever.

>>
>>2917233
WDW SM is Arrow jank and showing its age, however, the other versions are vastly inferior. The DL version is a boring layout in comparison. Not sure why anybody would want that. It doesn’t even have any drops… maybe one? I can’t really tell. Anyways, it sucks. When they added music in the 90s it improved it but I can’t even tell it’s been retracked. Compared to WDW BTM where the retrack is glass smooth but the same layout however it feels almost like a different ride.
>>
>>2917227
They kind of have to unfortunately. They won’t want to keep the two separate operating tracks for staffing and maintenance reasons. As soon as they close it for extensive overhaul, that layout is dead. It might be iconic and nostalgic to long time riders but to the GP it’s just a coaster in the dark which is layout-agnostic
>>
>>2917235
Just nigging around
>>
Hollywood Dream is back open. Mako is still closed but rumor is Seaworld plans to open it pending a state inspection (and I assume the same would apply to Apollo’s Chariot).
>>
>>2917252
DL’s is way better. MK’s itself only has one drop of any size so not sure how that’s an argument in its favor. It’s also way slower, not even hitting 30 mph. Maybe if you love laterals.
>>
>>2917267
Honestly MK’s is kind of a fancy wild mouse.
>>
>>2917267
DL’s feels slower to me and has no drops. The sound is doing some heavy lifting. WDW’s feels more “wild” and gives me miniature Magnum XL 200 vibes. I think the DL version just flat out sucks and is boring and skippable unless it has no line (which is almost never). It’s quite shit and I’m sorry to hear you prefer it, you just have quite shit tastes. This is probably just a case of California/SL snobbery where everything is better even when it’s not
>>2917270
Kinda. Banked turns though. The GP probably wouldn’t know a difference if they replaced it with a modern mouse.. I remember some even arguing that spinning mouse at AK was “the same” as SM.

I’m not worried about WDW gutting and replacing SM with a DL clone, DL’s is an old shitty layout. It’s really sad they retracted it (using a no name company) with the same layout. That was a good opportunity to improvise it like I’m sure they’ll get Vekoma to make something actually good at WDW when they gut it
>>
>>2917272
DL’s is objectively faster. MK’s does feel more “wild” considering it’s just a wild mouse. It’s nothing like Magnum though considering Magnum is fast with big drops and MK’s is slow with almost no drops at all. I grew up going to MK and didn’t have a full day at DL until this year. It’s just obvious they improved on the original concept.

They were designed in the 70s when the average US adult weight was 170lbs so it is a legit concern. The average adult Disney guest is well in excess of that and the park has to accommodate to them because they’re the paying guests. That’s why coasters like Tron have a special fat seat for fat people and that’s on top of the fact that the restraints are already equipped to handle the average 250lb fat American guest. The fat seat is for those who are morbidly obese
>>

You have to ride one ride 24 hours straight for $10,000, what are you riding?

I'm only familiar with WDW so that's the pool I'm selecting from. Giving it some thought I realize there aren't even a whole lot of ride vehicles there that wouldn't give you an ass ache after 1 hour. I guess if you want to game the question with a cheeky answer, you go Carousel of Progress since you could technically stand up, lay down and walk around without leaving the ride. I won't play that card.
Immediately out of the question due to discomfort: Omnimovers, boat rides. Peoplemover is spacious but janky. Space Mountain seats are super nice and comfy but I don't know about coastering 24 hours straight. Big Thunder is my favorite ride maybe ever but I would literally be deaf by the end.
I guess this is when I miss the riverboat, as that would be comfortable and unintrusive and freeing.
Weird how I never realized that none of the rides here are very comfortable. In fact many are simply uncomfortable. I understand why they mostly can't have padded seats though. Space Mountain is the only seat that I can recall thinking "oh wow this is nice, I could be here all day"
>>
>>2917679
This is just speculation from Ryan the Ride Mechanic. If the restraint failed, the other hypers would be closed. Mako reopened today btw. It’s most likely this >>2917596 and a sensor failed. It's really weird that sensor failure just doesn't even seem to be considered by him. A green light after only 1-2 clicks and him going out cold and pushing it open on the bunny hops seems like the most plausible option compared to the very heavy duty points of failure he mentions.

A structural failure of any kind would have been a "close all rides worldwide for inspections and xrays" deal.

Exactly, even if it was caused by shoddy maintenance, a catastrophic failure would have resulted in B&M requesting that all clamshell trains be grounded. So far, coaster buzz is the only discussion with voices of reason showing that the restraint doesn’t look all the way open and pointing out that eyewitness testimony in a crisis is unreliable (in the station, it would appear not closed and then all the restraints would open quickly to let everybody out).

Ryan the ride mechanic has interesting feedback on coasters but he was wrong about TT2. The restraint was dispatched in an unsafe position due to sensor fault (which has happened on this ride model) and ride ops being Atlanta-types. He probably would have still survived, as others possibly did with their restraints in an unsafe position due to the same sensor issue. But he passed out and was dislodged. I don’t expect the SF hypers to reopen though since most of them would close for the season next weekend

I’ve never been on either Goliath. They’re both on the small side though, sub 200ft drops. Assuming you don’t mean the MM one or the others with that name. I’ve only been on Nitro, Candy, Mako, Thunder Striker, and Diamondback. Mako and Diamondback are super fun and interchangeable, I could ride them all day. The others were okay.
>>
>>2918355
The sensor’s obviously
>>
>>2918340
I haven't encountered a B&M hyper that can beat Raging Bull back row yet, especially with how well it's been running the past few years.
>>
>>2918355
Sensors are a failsafe, they're both the most important thing to maintain and the thing you should rely on least. It's six Flags fault for sending the car out.

>push down and pull up checking for clicks and that it's secure
>visual check of the lines on the restaints show it's in a 3 click+ locked position

The sensors are there for when the ride ops fail to do their job. Six flags should test them, maintain them and if the people checking are givng the thumbs up when there are still red lights often, it's time to invest in belts
>>
>>2918356
>They’re both on the small side though, sub 200ft drops.
That’s actually their strengths. Their first drops are inferior to the others but everything else is better. The small size means tighter transitions. And the other hypers lose their speed quickly to MCBRs anyway.
>>2918361
Raging Bull’s back row is probably the best single moment on a B&M hyper but that’s really all that’s remarkable about it.
>>
>>2918336
>Ryan the ride mechanic has interesting feedback on coasters but he was wrong about TT2.
What was he wrong about? I remember he said Zamperla will get the ride running when thoosies were adamant that the project was doomed to fail.
>>
>>2918365
>Sensors are a failsafe
I don't know if we can really say that. They're an aid to the crew, but ultimately the crew is responsible to ensuring each restraint is fully down and locked. The restraint sensors are a modern take on those seatbelts B&M uses on other rides like inverts. They're not a redundant safety, they're used to indicate the harness is down far enough that all the pawls have engaged their ratchets. No restraint sensor available now can positively determine if a guest is secure, that falls on the operators.

>>2918369
>And the other hypers lose their speed quickly to MCBRs anyway.
It really is a buzzkill to get trimmed to hell in a MCBR. They're seldomly set up to lightly trim, it's usually a heavy reduction in speed. Goliath at SFMM is ridiculous, they trim that thing down to like 1mph or less.
>>
>>2918372
That’s part of why the B&M Goliaths are the best. SFMM’s Goliath is one of the worst I’ve ever seen.
>>
Speaking of restraints, I rode Big Bear Mountain twice yesterday. The first time, I was in the very last car on the right. My lap bar felt wrong. Like I could push it up too much when I pushed against it, and it kind of wobbled from side to side. I know it's not supposed to feel that way because when I rode it a second time in a different seat, it felt like what I'd expect a restraint to actually feel like. When I was in the back row, a ride op noticed me playing with the lap bar and came back to check it again. And it held me in, I was fine, but there was definitely something wrong with it. Like it needs to be tightened or something.

I suspect you were right at the point where you almost got another click but didn't, so you had the maximum amount of travel possible

These lapbars don't click, they're hydraulic. And like I said, one of them wobbled from side to side, not just up and down.

The park interval will always be lower than the B&M interval so of course it’s designed to be able a lower rate than its maximum.
>We don't really know this. It's safe to presume it seldomly hits minimum interval at Six Flags parks from their staffing practices alone.
Or Sea World or Busch or Hershey. I believe that’s all of the American ones.
>But unlike Intamin, with a reasonably competent crew you can hit intervals and make or even exceed their stated throughput (it's happened at Raging Bull with 3 trains).
As I said, it’s rare. I’m not even sure I believe that though. Raging Bull has 36 seats, but that’s 36 people to get seated and 36 lap bars to check, which you can’t even start doing until all of them have put away everything into the bins, because it’s not enough of a draw for mandatory lockers.

>Ok, provide proof that they're routinely hitting that interval every day it operates for an entire year, otherwise this is just your headcanon.
That doesn’t follow at all. What was the source of your 1000 number? Just gut feeling?
>>
>>2918389
Someone else mentioned 1000 but it's well known that B&M hourly capacity is realistically achievable and Intamin's seldom, if ever, is
>>
>>2918411
Are many people saying this?
>>
>>2918414
If you work in the industry or are just a thoosie it's pretty well known that ride manufacturers' stated capacities range from realistic to ridiculous. Intamin's stated capacities are usually in the latter category.
>>
So I guess it's confirmed now that Six Flags will indeed be adding seatbelts to Goliath and to their other hypers. I do hope that Mako and Apollo's Chariot won't do the same.
>>

>it's pretty well known
That's all I need.
>>
>>2918417
How much do they affect the experience? I feel like it should be quite a bit but I honestly don't have any memories of "I sure wish I wasn't wearing a seatbelt right now" on the ones with them.

>Epic Universe AP "3 park pass" happening
kino but I think it wont allow access into the portals since the face technology is already in place. The AP will include Celestial Park only which I think is good compromise, still get the popular restaurants and stardust. It will also get people into the empty restaurants at the park and hotel
