Ipanema and Copacabana could be kind of sketchy, but most of it due to homeless people. You should always be aware of your surrounding and don't have your phone out in the open by busy roads.
The historical center of Rio wasn't that sketchy, (some) parts were kind of just old and smelled of piss but not real sketchy.

I rented a car and drove from Sao Paulo and Rio and I was never really in a place where I felt like I was about to get mugged. Just exercise caution.

for rio: go to any hostel w/ bar, buy a drink, talk to people. look for paulistas (chicks from sao paulo) taking a trip to rio, they love gringos and can usually speak some english. hit up mundo lingo thursdays, samba parties whenever, boteco belmonte leblon on weekend nights. be willing to start a conversation with anyone and brazil opens up to you, even without knowing portuguese
