Flew home four days ago and I am still not fully back. We rented a car in Athens and drove three hours south into the Peloponnese with no real plan, found a village my husband had circled in a guidebook from 1987, parked outside the walls and walked in. The butcher was open. A woman was arguing on a balcony. We bought bread from a bakery the size of a closet and ate it on a step in the square under a plane tree that had no business still being alive. In the afternoon we drove down to the coast and swam off rocks, no beach, just rocks and water so clear you could see the bottom twenty feet down and the bottom was just more rock, pale and clean. We dried off in the sun and drove back up to the village and sat outside the one kafeneion and drank coffee that arrived without being asked about and watched nothing happen for two hours and I have been to forty-one countries and I cannot tell you what was happening in those two hours except that I was completely inside something and not outside looking at it and that almost never happens to me anywhere.
