I was on a train from tokyo to odawara and some older asian ladies talked loudly the whole time , im too dumb to know if it was japanese or a different asian language.

Any advice for comfortably staying in Japan for 2-3 months this winter?

I enjoy being alone, but it would be nice to somehow meet some cool locals or other travelers.
Planning on renting weekly/monthly apartments and I am looking for recommendations for smaller towns/cities and websites for finding these besides airbnb. I will not spend to much time in Tokyo.
I plan to snowboard for at least a few weeks and am trying to map out a less busy resort/mountain to stay near

tokyo is the easiest place to find short term rentals. the process to rent a place is really complicated. post wwii there was a massive housing shortage so they wrote the law basically making it impossible to evict someone. so the landlords really vet you hard and go through a lot of paperwork, even for a short term stay. they want you to do a viewing first, even over zoom, and then after you decide you want it it takes like 10 days or so before you can move in. so start looking a couple of weeks before you arrive

tokyo is so ass. After visiting osaka kyoto nara hiroshima, it just feels like shit. There's nothing to see and I'm just day two here as a tourist. It feels like a soulless concrete jungle with mid overcrowded restaurants and shops.
Like literally what is there to do here besides going to an observation tower once (the weather is shit now so even that sucks)

This is how I feel and I live here. All the stuff I enjoy doing is the most basic shit (being a regular at a bar, cooking my own food, going to small restaurants). Tokyo is just a giant shopping mall for shit you can find online. It’s pretty bad when “shibuya crossing” is mentioned as a major attraction when it’s literally just pavement. I was last there in early 2024 but as an example in terms of conbinis exclusively I saw mostly Indians in Tokyo and 1 or 2 middle aged men, fewer Indians in Osaka, and none in Fukuoka, Hokkaido or Tottori. In Fukuoka the girl working there was cute and ほいー'd at me. Strangely enough there were Indians working at the onsen ryokan we stayed at in Nagano, but I've read this is apparently due to them being unable to find Japanese staff or the kids wanting to go off into the cities. Still sucks.

I was in Hakone climbing the very steep stair mountain path near Gora (pic related but not mine, same path).
