it had some strong moments for sure like the times Fuji sparks inspiration and color in Pokke at the beginning and before JC and the races were great, but I also wish there could have been a director's cut version of the film with like an extra 40 minutes to flesh out the cast more (not like those cuts typically exist for animated films though)

The animation is beautiful but it kind of has the same problem as season 3 imo. The animation goes all out, all the time, so when we get to the climax it doesn't have anywhere to go except for doing some abstract and metaphorical stuff. By itself that wouldn't be a problem, but since the characters are all a little underdeveloped, the stellar animation can't sell the emotional moments no matter how many metaphors and effects they cram into the scene
Peak umamusume will always be season 2

lol I guess there's a lot someone entirely new wouldn't get. the winning live definitely feels totally random to someone who hasn't seen any other uma since despite ostensibly being made for anyone to get into it also totally makes the assumption that you're actually already familiar with the winning live aspect (which really only has proper exposition in the beginning of season 1). as for the other characters you can't really write them off because the umas are all based off historical racehorses who really were in those races (the franchise is basically a big multigenerational adaptation of Japanese horse racing) so those other umas really should have been given more time to cook within the film. and yes Fuji is definitely a prince type lmao
