>According to Nvidia, hackers have discovered a new vulnerability across Windows and Linux drivers, allowing them to gain access to PCs and wreak some major havoc. Forget about having a non-operational PC; the exploit could allow bad actors to get away with crucial data stored on your PC or inject some malicious code that would give them unfettered access.>Nvidia users can grab the new security software update for GPU display drivers post-haste and upgrade to driver version 596.49. From what I can tell everything past 581.94 for Ampere is complete dogshit with performance regressions, new bugs and increased instability, and most if not all of these vulnerabilities aren't actually that threatening if you have more than two brain cells anyway, so Nvidia can fuck right off with their newer drivers unless they finally get around to fixing the long-standing issues that people have been reporting (which isn't happening as long as they keep having pajeets code their updates with ChatGPT).

>>739271002Heard about that one, but never heard of it actually happening here(not that it couldn't have I guess knowing these retards sometimes). You should never run anything off an external device on a computer connected to anything important. if I ever feel the need to run something I'm skeptical of, I put it into an old laptop with nothing important and leave it not connected to anything. Though I don't have any reason to do that anyways so it's not really a big deal.Companies are always so worried about hackers and muh cyber security that they forget most real hackers don't have to bother with any of that shit because they just need one retard to click one shady link and all that security is suddenly useless. Most cyber security issues we have would honestly be fixed by just completely disconnecting internal systems from the internet entirely so that the only e-mails and messages they get are internal ones only, but they don't. Which i guess I can't complain about to a certain point because it lets me continue justifying my job to out of touch boomers who still think 4chan is going to hack their mainframes.

Did you ever notice how technology at first made the world better, but at some point it began making the world worse, but by that point there was no choice?
>>739271910Has there ever been a time when there wasn't a substantial number of people who were absolutely sure new technologies were making the world worse? Perhaps in the distant past, before the industrial revolution, when technological change was much slower. But these people die off, everyone else accepts the new stuff and views the next thing with trepidation. That isn't to say that the future won't be horrifying for us to behold, but it is not for us in the first place, and what we think of it doesn't matter in the end.
>>739273271Right now is horrifying for us to behold.
>>739254019It's probably a really good idea to update then, I read something about Cemu and another gamer program being hacked recently. They uploaded compromised .exes for people to download. I've been playing a fork of ShadPS4 that runs GR2 lately and while the dev is super based and I love him, he could also be a super hacker about to fuck my shit up kek. So I'll be updating even though updating drivers usually does more harm than good.Twilight Princess just got that PC port too, which is getting updates. That's another thing that could take advantage of an exploit like this maybe.>>739255845Smooth Motion was pretty cool if you don't want to use lossless scaling, same with Nvidia Ansel before they dropped it.

>>739273821Bloodborne runs better than GR2 tho. Get that Diego fork, the only other mod I needed was the vertex explosion fix but I think that it's redundant now, didn't they fix that with readbacks? Either way, you just need that mod. The only bad thing was that the fix I'm talking about made your character have a generic face so you couldn't be an OC but that's' whatever, I just wore hats anyway.BB then has a shitload of mods to improve the game. Like I had ultrawide mods that fixed the UI, higher resolution, higher FPS, faster loading, and some other shit I can't remember. But oyu just needed the Diego fork which I believe is still maintained and the vertex fix, which may no longer be needed.GR2 works but you have to play at natirve resolution for now and there are more crashing issues than BB had. It's making really quick progress after this fork popped up though.

>>739283032>NTA but no vulnerabilities are needed at all if you download a virus and run it on your machine as an admin accountEven if you're running an admin account on Windows UAC and antiviruses serve as stop-gaps to prevent malicious action from escalating, the problem is when you have viruses exploiting security holes that allow them to bypass those stop-gaps, which is what makes holes like this an issue that require patching.Of course if you're running Windows and have UAC turned off you're just asking for trouble in exchange for slightly more day to day convenience.

>>739324027I'm pretty sure Nvidia themselves are saying there haven't been any confirmed uses of this exploit in the wild, they're just trying to get ahead of it by releasing the fix because potentially they could be happening. If they were it would be easy to spot since it would involve them sending commands to Nvidia GPU processes and it would also be a way bigger story with more youtubers releasing videos with scary red text on them.

>>739326172"confirmed uses of this exploit in the wild" doesn't mean "demonstrations of how the exploit works". As of right now it requires a low permissions local user to execute the malicious code. If you run a file called freemoneynovirus.exe, there are much easier and more effective ways to get fucked than the malicious actor who sent you that file escalating permissions via commands to your GPU.
>>739326210>Says you need to be at least on version 482.53 on a GTX 10 series>Have a GTX 10 series on a version number higher than what's statedI don't know lil' zoom, maybe you need to ask ChatGPT.

Not everyone browses 4chan, reddit or social media related to this, 99% of the population doesn't even know the vulnerability exists.
>>739328269It's still a bit dangerous because this theoretical file wouldn't involve a UAC prompt, since it involves API calls to the GPU that any local user would have permissions to do. So if you do get a weird file and run it, you might not realize you're getting fucked, whereas with other malware a UAC prompt would at least give you a chance to reconsider running it.
>>739328470People with UAC prompts will just press ok because for them the prompt is something that always happens.

>>739328882If it's discord from a trusted source then I let it go through. If I'm opening a notepad file or something else and UAC comes up then I stop what I'm doing and investigate. Acting like you should disable UAC or just say yes to everything is retarded.
