Man the skills suck. It seems fine as a dialogue-heavy adventure game so far but it would genuinely do better without trying to be DE and failing.
Nevermind the fact that the skills' lines are shit and they have little personality, half the time I genuinely can't tell why a specific ability is being checked instead of another. Game's just Disco Elysium in a different setting so far. Writing style's pretty much identical. Mechanically, it's improved in every way, and it's artistically as strong as DE. Unless the story ends up being garbage in the end, the only reason to dislike it is because of ZA/UM's executives.

It's not that they "changed it because they realized it was retarded", it's because it was a demo. It wasn't finished. In the demo there's no animation, after the initial questions it just hard cuts to you automatically walking out the bathroom with the default animation and that's that. In the game proper the psychedelic background gives way to Cascade in the background who looks behind her then slaps herself awake into the game's graphics.

I didn't like Disco Elysium. As enjoyable as some characters/dialogue are, it does a truly terrible job of "selling" your own dialogue choices to you. You have to approach it in this sort of detached style and say "wouldn't it be wacky if I was some full blown put the children back in the coal mines ancap?" It doesn't try to convince you of the merits of communism or anything, you are just supposed to bring that into the game and let yourself metagame. The idea of any kind of self inserting is off the table, and really the idea of playing any kind of character is too. You only have caricatures to crash into things.

When do you get conditioning slots? I have like 4 thoughts that I can't use.

The game's other major contributor Argo Tuulik said that Kurvitz was lying about writing "90%" of Disco Elysium, or was delusional about it at best. The setting is something a bunch of them created together long before he wrote his book. Kurvitz managed to get most of them to work with him in ZA/UM.
