DP is the right one because it started the weird faux3D shit with its overworld graphics. They barely reused anything from the gba outside a few battle sprites.

While some of the dynamic 3D camera angles were neat, especially in gen 5, I generally thought the games were a step down from the GBA because of the sprite and models mix.

Pokemon really did peak with Gen 3, not only artistically, but it also took the good of 1 and 2 and smoothed out all the rough edges of those.
Gens 4 was decent too but added too much legendaryslop and basically felt like a pointless rehash of 3.

Yeah I get what you mean. The battle sprites look like stiff paper dolls wobbling around, but the actual illustrated key art goes hard as hell. The rotoscoped animations have this weird bootleg anime OVA energy that’s kind of endearing once you stop expecting GBA-tier sprite polish.

It’s like they had incredible character designers and then had to shove everything through the DS blender. Shadow Dragon especially feels caught between eras - the CG portraits and promo art scream late 90s/early 2000s fantasy, but then you see a crit animation and Marth’s doing that awkward wind-up like he’s underwater.

Still, I’ll take that over the sterile plastic look some later 3D entries drifted into. At least the DS games had a distinct vibe, even if it was a janky one.

I wish I could still enjoy pokemon as an adult

they're so fucking slow and boring and easy, and there's no mystery anymore about what's out there. pokemon sapphire was one of my favorite games as a kid and I don't think I could get through a full playthrough now without getting bored.
>>
To me Pokemon needs the level of abstraction that Gen 1+2 provide. You can basically never actually portray the work of Pokemon realistically.
I never actually played any game beyond Blue and Yellow until playing Crystal last year, and it still "worked" even if it was purely nostalgia.

Seeing this thread reminded me that I think Pokemon was much better when you had to give HM's to them to perform actions like surf, strength, fly etc.

Having rental Pokemon or partner abilities is dogshit and ruins the feeling of adventure along with the rewarding feeling of obtaining, raising and using specific Pokemon to do certain jobs while also being part of your team.

Yes I don't give a shit if it takes up a slot, Yes I don't give a shit if it's not competitively viable, Yes I don't give a shit if the moves are bad. Yes I don't give a shit if it hurts team variety as I have certain Pokemon types in my team, Yes I don't give a shit if it makes zero sense why a Pokemon with wings can't fly me somewhere without a HM.

To me, the only bad HM's are Flash and Defog. I can see a use case for allowing you to overwrite HM's as opposed to being permanent but outside of that I don't care. It's a lot more fun to me to use my own Pokemon to traverse the world as more challenges approach and just brute force all fights as I see fit.

I'm currently playing through Black (1). I've got to say, I'm not really enjoying it as much as prior generations. There's too much forced dialogue (this was a problem in platinum as well) and the whole soft reboot thing of only having new 'mons just feels bad. Doesn't help that half the dex is just very unappealing designs. The routes between towns also feel very short, but that might be due to almost all of them having an NPC around the mid-point that fully heals your party.
>>
>>739301387

>>739310108
Oh, no no. I'm perfectly capable of that. It's just, you put Scarlet in good. yet HG and Pt in bad. However, anyone who has played all three of these games and would rank them in this manner is either lobotomized, or being incredibly Jewish. You can still type like a normal person, so I'm assuming it's the latter. It's also likely that you've never played them and are just shitposting despite that, and while I respect that, since I did spend an inordinate amount of time in this franchise I just felt like sharing my opinion here as well.

If this really is your genuine, honest-to-god opinion, it would make you a strange man indeed.
>>
>>739308961
TMs should never have been one-time use and HMs should always have been overwritable. You're not wrong about anything else though. You really don't need more than 2 attack moves on any given 'mon, so spreadung your HMs across the party isn't really an issue.

Well one element of Gen 4 I disliked was the way the player is forced to engage with the story. There are constant cutscenes, your rival is a boring pussy, and you're heavily railroaded in the order in which your explore the world. The HGSS games follow this formula, changing the story from the original GB versions to be more like this. They even added a new pussy friendly rival. There's a clear throughline between disliking, or liking, these games. And Gen 9's world was the exact inverse of this.
>>

Getting awarded HMs should allow any pokemon in your party that can learn it to use it outside of combat. And learn it as a move if you want it in battle specifically.
Thus it's still your team doing shit, just without restrictive nature of HM slaves.

This is from a DOS game from 1996. 100% fully working mirrors, no shader effects, no fakery. You can smash the mirror and completely break it. Made to run on a minimum 486. You can replace the 2D sprites with 3D models and the mirror still works. Black magic.

I know most say gens 4 or 5 are when it all went to shit, but personally I believe there was still some good in the series up to gen 7. Gen 8 is when any traces of care or attention were completely gone and it's baffling to me because it was the mainline game's jump to main consoles, something fans had anticipated for a long fucking time, and they shit out games where you cannot even go inside buildings in the overworld, fucking insanity. Pokemon somehow evolved backwards and this includes the gimmicks which ahve become so retarded they had to revert back to megas.
Anyone who still buys Pokemon anything in this day and age is not a fan, just a retard who buys for the sake of buying.

I know everyone is meming and shitposting, but it genuinly saddens me that creative solutions like these will be lost in the future.

I'm not talking specificaly about 2D pixel games but games overall. The artistry in video game design is slowly getting eroded away because people will rely on readily available "solutions" in unreal engine, just some plugin that can be attached to a bus or whatever the fuck they call it and voila, the effect is made. But could have been done in clever ways that would have cost a fraction of the performance.

how about that instead: game studio hires actors placed in a room identical to the one you're playing at where there's a mirror, a camera records them and send the feed to the texture placed on the mirror in the game. The actors are paid to copy your moves and shit.
Also if you change clothes at a save point they must quickly change theirs too. And if you go offline the mirror explodes.

No, that is 4 sprites tied to a variable. Every flower is given a variable called "wind" from 0 to 63 (1 to 64 for retards). A global wind variable counts up from 0 to 63, then resets and does it again. When the global wind variable matches the wind variable on a flower, the flower changes from alternating between sprites 1 and 2 to instead 3, then 4, holding 4, then 3, then repeating the 1-2 cycle until it's wind variable is called again.

The issue with pokemon games is that the gatekeeping at certain points feels so artificial. I'd be far less against the linearity of Pokemon if it felt less, I don't know, obvious? Like the thing you need to get between towns is the reward from the gym, and no one is doing anything about it?

It's lucky that the reward isn't swim in a town when there's a tree blocking the way.

Being so railroaded (and for such bullshit reasons) is against the spirit of the game. It turns an adventure into a theme park ride, completely on rails.
Of course, things like JRPGs are on rails (what a coincidence that the rock slide is cleared the second you beat the boss) but at least it makes sense in universe.

The dumb thing is they had to try so hard to come up with ways to keep players from softlocking or sequence breaking, like making moves impossible to overwrite and Pokemon impossible to trade or release and requiring badges to use but ONLY outside of battle. But the answer is so simple.

Just make it a Trainer Technique. Don't teach your fish to swim or or your bird to fly, learn how to do it efficiently with them. It shows your growth as a trainer and doesn't need inventory/movelist management or some fucking summoning app.

Then put the skills in reasonable places. "I need to learn to swim, maybe I should hit the city with the world renowned giant pool. I need to cut trees and here's a log cabin lumber town." Bam, there's your hook. Go there and fight Teams and Rivals and have an adventure

But the point of Pocket Monsters is for your obstacles to be other trainers and gym leaders and more powerful wild mons. A rock standing in your way and requiring a mon that can SMASH it is a pointless addition to the progression system and degrades the gameplay a lot.

Imagine making a racing game, but then making it so that in order to progress to new tracks your driver needs to go to the gym so that he can lift metal doors or jump over cliffs to access tracks. Or making it so that you need to find a scuba gear somewhere so that you can access an underwater track. It's pure retardation.

>>
>>739336259

>>
>>739370762
Your example is retarded. My racing game example is much closer to conveying what official Pokemon games feel like. A racing game being injected with shoddy platforming and collectathon parts is just as bad as a creature battler and collection game being injected with shoddy locked-down JRPG progression parts. Official Pokemon games are basically like Crash Tag Team Racing, when they could have been CTR, Mario Kart 8 or Karters 2.
Pokemon is supposed to be (read: "better off as") a free roam adventure game where the challenge is battling Pokemon and the goal is to collect them all and win all badges. Arbitrarily locking progression behind moveset gimmicks which don't have anything to do with the primary gameplay mechanics makes no sense. You can just use the level system and have more powerful mons and mandatory encounters appear in areas you want "locked". That would have been a more natural fit for a Pokemon game.
>What's your point?
What's yours? I've yet to see any argument against me or any of the anons here who prefer the open world version of the game.

Exploration is a large part of Pokemon, navigating spaces and sometimes solving puzzles. Field moves fit perfectly into that as a way to gate progression in a natural way and to encourage the player to go out and find different Pokemon to do different things.

>Then put the skills in reasonable places. "I need to learn to swim, maybe I should hit the city with the world renowned giant pool. I need to cut trees and here's a log cabin lumber town."
Exactly how I'd do it. Ultima 4, only it's these trainer skills instead of virtues.
(I've never played Ultima 4 and only know about it by reputation)

Or if things are tied to moves make the moves more general. Like a pokemon that learns how to Cut or Swim learns this in a non-battle capacity but the teaching of the skill results in an increased stat boost related to that out of battle skill.
>teach swim
>mon gets extra dex and strength
Or whatever.

But that's not what happens because "navigating spaces and sometimes solving puzzles" isn't what those moves are. It's just a roadblock that makes every game essentially the same.
To go to another franchise, it's like making a totally linear Metroid game.
Even JRPGs allow for some freedom between roadblocks, and not just the ride hitting the brakes.

>play the better one first so you can hate the worse one more
No thanks, I already did that by playing SS before Platinum. The QoL that was in SS, but not platinum was a bit jarring. Ironic considering the C-gear crap gets in the way making things worse than the game before it.

That's too straightforward and honest, not very Japanese of you.
That said, they do use that system in Lets Go Pikachu.

Gen 1, 2 and 3 is the only real Pokémon. Never played anything since. Gen 2 was fucking amazing beyond belief.

I'll be honest, I always thought the too many legendaries complaints for gen 4 was always lame. Sinnoh still feels like the largest single region in the series and this is part of it. It always felt like there were secrets tucked away everywhere. I know every region did that, especially 3, but 4 always felt like it hit the gas just a bit harder, and I never knew what I'd come across if I decided to fuck around and explore that one pathway I passed the first time around. I still remember finding out I could explore the grass under cycling road and found the cave that had Gible. I still remember finding Giratina blind. I mean maybe it was just because I was 13 but the game felt fucking endless, and next thing you know woah a dungeon with some bizarre legendary. That was the whole gimmick, a region with DEEPEST LORE so you had all these supposed deities sitting around on their ass. I was about that shit I guess.

Still feels like I'll discover something or someplace new when I go to play it again.

I think the lowpoly looks of the DS Final Fantasies/other such RPGs are super charming, but I may be in the minority here.

Pokemon used to offer a lot of freedom, even with field moves in play. You had plenty of different things to explore, especially at the point in each game where you're given Surf and suddenly open up a dozen optional areas in early routes.
Pokemon being linear is a problem of the developers. Kanto and Johto are WAY more open than Galar and Alola. Even their foray into open world games with SV & ZA are demonstrably terrible.
Do you really just want dancing clowns in every game? Or do you want the completely open nothing that is Paldea in every game?

The ideal would be something closer to Dark Souls, open in that it is interconnected from the start rather than open as in empty expanses.

One of my issues caused by the legendary bloat of gen 4 is how many of them were locked behind events that are no longer normally accessible. The post game in particular suffers from having these weird empty rooms or objects that you can't do anything with unless you have an old ass event item you can no longer obtain

And how is this different from ROWE? In ROWE you still need to unlock specific pokemon, specific moves or specific items to get to some parts of the game in order to catch more pokemon, especially legendaries. You still need to have the surf HM in order to surf, you still need a fishing rod to get some pokemon, you still need to beat all gyms to challenge the elite 4 and the champion, etc. etc. The only "open world" part of it is the fact that you can pick and choose your starting town and you're not blocked from traveling to any town you want and beating gyms in any order you want. It's not like you can instantly participate in any content you want. Even when it comes to gym battles you still need to catch specific pokemon and farm levels to gain an advantage.

Open world does not mean "everything is unlocked and you have infinite master balls and there is no challenge at all since you're a God". Judging from this thread some people believe that to be the case, but that would not even be a game at that point and nobody would play it. As some people in last thread pointed out, ROWE is more like a free roam game than a fully open world game. It's similar to what I imagine dark souls or world of warcraft would be (never played those, just heard people talk about them) where you can go almost anywhere but you need to be well prepared for some areas, while some areas (especially those with optional content) are locked behind progression systems.
