I just wrote a big screed about Sunless Sea and lost it because of an image upload error T-T
to say it again quickly, Sunless Sea is my favorite ocean game, I love the exploration, I love the atmosphere, I love the writing, I like the merchant aspect of it, the combat is meh, it but more fleshed out would probably be my favorite game of all time and I haven't even played the browser game

I'm not familiar. I'm OP and I should mention that my PC is a piece of junk so I have some trouble running modern 3D games. I haven't played Subnautica yet in part because I doubt I could run it.
>>
I have a few ocean games sitting in my library that I haven't played yet:
Dredge: fishing/salvage horror(?) game. I'm a huge fan of the Onion's Helcomb County Municipal Lake Dredge Appraisal so this game was an instant buy for me. https://youtu.be/TTifcI4A0jM
Shantae and the Pirate's Curse: it has pirate in the name so presumably it has something to do with the ocean, I liked the DSI Shantae and apparently this one is the best in the series so I picked it up on sale a while back.
Sea Legends: apparently it's like Sid Meier's Pirates but better. I like history so I figured I'd get a kick out of it.

Dredge is really solid, a tad bit short but a fun game.

Sea Salt is an interesting game I didn't see people talk much about, you play as a scorned evil sea god sending a horde of monsters onto the surface to take revenge on your wayward worshippers. It's like Pikmin in that you direct your horde but don't directly control them and managing the numbers of your henchmen is integral to the gameplay. It's pretty short, reviewers say circa 4 hours, when I first played it years back I got filtered by what I think was the penultimate level.

Are there any good Lovecraftian RPGs? Like a game that is to Call of Cthulhu how most fantasy RPGs are to Dungeons and Dragons. The platonic ideal is running around coastal New England solving mysteries and fighting cultists but I'm open to other ideas. I've played Fear & Hunger and Look Outside and liked them both a lot.

Have you guys played Barotrauma? I used to play it a lot with my SS13 friends. My computer can't handle playing on any of the larger submarines so I've never got to experience 10+ player lobbies. I still think the game is super cool, back when I played it my group would always try the campaign mode but it seemed rather unfinished, and that most of the other people who played it were mostly approaching as a RPG like SS13.

I think people liked Mario Odyssey's Seaside Kingdom? The issue with 3D water movement is that most of the time you're throwing a landlubber into the water so they naturally move much worse, if you play as an aquatic character it should be fine. But then that opens up the real issue, which is the same reason why there aren't a lot of games with flying protagonists: designing fully 3D environments with lots of verticality is really hard.

Depth is a great asymmetrical 2v4 multiplayer game. 4 divers need to collect gold and gtfo while 2 sharks need to kill them enough times. A dozen shark variations and many more evolutions, ammo types, gun upgrades. It's really fucking fun, a shame that it is low pop nowadays but it's still possible to find games pretty reliably.

Thinking of getting Under The Waves.

Monstrum is set on a cargo ship so it counts. It's a pretty old horror game where the monster is randomly picked, item locations are (mostly) randomized and you have to find particular ones to unlock one of the 3 escape routes. I recommend not reading anything about it and it's a great experience, even if it didn't age super well.

Megaquarium is an extremely comfy aquarium builder tycoon. The financial management side is rather light, but there's great fish variety (and plenty of mods) with plenty of fish management to think of, from foods to which creatures can live in the same tank. It's great comfy fun.

Haven't tried it. I only played for 12 hours and that was purely in campaign with plenty more to go I think, so depends how much time you want to spend on it. If you're not sure just get the base game I'd say and get the DLC only if you're a fish nerd for the types of creatures they offer.

the women in the game are actually fish kemonos rather than proper mermaids and you say this like there's a good mermaid fishing game out there (TELL ME ABOUT IT)
there's always the classic of getting saved by one when drowning/cast overboard, or malevolent ones acting like sirens and luring ships to their doom
you could turn the saving narrative on its head and have a lifeguard mistake a mermaid for a drowning woman and drag her out of the water much to her chagrin

Too bad it finally decayed into irrelevance. What with all the tranny corders and infighting and schizos. The real shocker for me when I revisited it once again as I regularly did only to find out that /tg/ of all things is dead. RIP in pieces. And SS14 is policed by power hungry trannies dehubbing what they don't like so that's dead in the water.

Ok, here's an idea: fantasy setting in its own Age of Sail. MC-kun is a (wannnabe?) pirate/privateer/minor noble/naval officer from one of the not!European nations who rolls up into a remote tropical sea with the goal of setting up his own kingdom. There is some evil cthulthu cultist not!Aztec empire already ruling over the disparate monster girl tribes of the region and MC-kun decides he needs to marry into the ruling house of one of them to legitimize his would-be rule. The first half of the game is foucused on courting the bachelorettes and building your powerbase, your political marriage is a choice you make like halfway through the game, and the second half is focused on developing your relationship with your wife and raising your kids and conquering the region. I don't like how most romances in games treat getting married/having sex as the end of the romance. Have a few flavors of mermaids, a crab girl, a shark girl, and maybe a human princess/admiral from your home kingdom for if you want to colonize the South Sea instead of integrating into it. Oh and also the octopus princess from the cthulhu empire as an evil route. Gameplay might end up being more of a SRPG than traditional JRPG?
>>

Hi I'm the guy you were replying to, I haven't played Skies yet and am telling myself I will after I get all of Seas' achievements, but the game looks a little iffy to me, changing the setting so much seems a little bold and it being a *sea* is so integral to the game's identity I'm not sure if it would be as good.

Yeah, playing through HITIAM I kept thinking "wow a second take on this game could be really good, I see the vision but it's just missing the mark" so I looked into the dev and saw that he's already made a bunch of games and reused their assets for HITIAM. I haven't gone back to play any of his previous games. I like the attempts at actually worldbuilding the consequences of men being turned into women willy nilly but the rest of the writing isn't really there. Hunter's gender angst goes away like a day after getting gender bent.
>>
>>739322620
While its made by the same development team, its not by the same writer
The dev team basically ousted him, tried to frame him for sexual harassment and refused to remove quest and art about the writers family,
They used art of the dudes daughter as a steam card

If you like the writing, check out Cultist Simulator and Book of Hours

Another idea: MC-kun is a private investigator/federal agent sent to look into the suspicious finances of some beachy tourist town's municipal government. Or maybe tracking down the finances of some super shady multinational corporation headquartered in a tax haven? In doing so, he finds out that the town/island/whatever is a front organization for/under the control of some sort of Lovecraftian cult that he now has to start fighting against. However, some of the locals also have beef with the cult and are glad to help you. Party members may include but are not limited to genki tomboy surf shop owner, long-lost childhood friend trad wife with healing skills, stoic Okinawan strip mall karate instructor. MC-kun's .357 revolver works against cultists and low-level monsters but the more esoteric critters the cult can summon need esoteric solutions. Naturally for any sort of urban fantasy setting, the monster (girls) can all disguise themselves as humans through some means and to MC-kun's horror, he begins to realize that the many of the friendly townspeople are horrible fish monsters (sexy mermaids) too. Surfer-chan is a mermaid, tradwife-chan is a mermaid, Okinawan-chan is a ningyo, oh no! Here's the kicker: they're all recruiters for *rival* Lovecraftian cults and will gladly initiate MC-kun into their mysteries should he romance them. Maybe tradwife-chan is a devout Catholic whose family was converted by the Sea Bishop (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bishop-fish) centuries ago. If it's your thing, maybe MC-kun gets a little fishy himself through the process. Another thought, the cult running not!Fiji is actually a Satanist or otherwise very much NOT Lovecraftian cult, which is why the Cthulhu cultist mermaids all have an axe to grind with it.

It's not that dead. New blood is still entering 13, even if from undesirable places. I got into it from hanging out with furries in high school (not a furry I swear.) There are still people trying to run servers that aren't total AIDS, like Surfshack. The only way for SS13 to truly die is for an actual better alternative to be made (which would be less of a death and more of a metamorphosis) or for people to stop caring about space stations. I fear the latter is more likely. My favorite part of the game has always been getting to roleplay as a Star Trek side character with the mechanics to back it up.

I would also like to know this. You can filter the sale by "exploration" tag but most of the games are about exploring the surface of the ocean, islands and whatnot.

1st third of current EA is "look shiny" followed by everything in sight attacking you with no permanent way to deal with it, unlike the knife bonking them with a box cutter means they only go away for a few seconds

2nd third is a long drawn out BZ-style yapfest

3rd third is sort of similar to the experience of the first with a scattering of info/audio logs while you go about your gatheran and craftan

So all in all it's a solid don't buy/10.

Mega not an ocean game so much, but it could be sea/island themed. Are there any decent sandbox survival games without much of a goal? Something akin to say Long Dark or preferably more like Unreal World. I already have Stranded Deep and Green Hell and they're okay but not really what I'm looking for. I don't know, hard to describe since I'm not even sure what kind of game I mean. Something with fishing/crafting/leveling up and stuff at least.

Dredge is like a guilty pleasure. I know I shouldn't give them credit because it's such a simplistic game. This is the kind of game an artist would make if they just wanted a vehicle to show you all their cool fish art. The world is actually relatively small and each area can be completed fairly fast, but it's a great game to listen to a podcast while hunting rare fish. It's probably not worth the full price tag but if you already have definitely dig in.

I disagree about Dave the Diver though. Dredge is strong because it sticks to one core gameplay loop. You like the fishing and steering? You're gonna be fishing and steering all the time. For me the problem with Dave the Diver is it can't decide if it wants to be a business sim or a roguelike or a farming sim or a trading card battler etc etc

Don't even get me started. The controls on it were really cool too, you'd tap the D-pad to give yourself a tiny burst of momentum, so you'd have to mash to build up speed, but it was also really slippery, so once you had speed you could just do single taps in directions to change the angle you moved at. I should replay the Oracles games, they were fun.

I think I'm out of specifically fish webms so my wider /an/ collection will have to suffice.

In D&D 3.5e's "Stormwrack" supplement, snapping turtles were added to the list of animals druids could take as animal companions. People like ocean games, but what genres of ocean games could you split them up into? For example:

>Tropical
Games set primarily in tropical locations
>Pirate
Games heavily featuring pirates
>Fishing
Games revolving around fishing
>Fish Management
Games revolving around the care of fish and other nautical animals
>>
>>739342949
>Horror
Game scares the player targeting phobias of the ocean or things found in the ocean.
>Sailing
Game focuses on the actual operation of a ship, heavy overlap with pirate and fishing genres.

Aquatic Park management (Examples of the genre include Zoo Tycoon:: Marine Mania, Zoo Tycoon 2: Marine Mania, and Sea World Tycoon)

Diving Simulator (Examples include Everblue, Endless Ocean, and Endless Ocean 2)

Lovecraftian (Examples include Etrian Odyssey III and Iron Lung)
Could Lovecraftian be split into things truly derived from his works and stuff that's just influenced by it? Like Hard Lovecraft, Soft Lovecraft?

Also should freshwater, ayy lmao oceans, and water be included in such a list?

The only other one I know about that is an outright and totally mermaid game is Kiss Beneath the Sea. However, here are a few games with mermaid tgs that I like:
>Monline - can play through most of chapter 2 tg'd into a mermaid if you make the right choices at the start of the chapter
>Magical Camp - tg into a mermaid for the two underwater dungeons
>The Exile of Aphrodisia - you select a long term tf at the start of the game and mermaid tg is one of them
>Between - tg into a mermaid for an underwater dungeon (like 30 hours in though sucker)
>TSF Dungeon - can be tg'd into a mermaid by mermaid enemies (picrel), beating the underwater dungeon unlocks it as a form you can switch into at will
>The Isle of TS Monster Girls - whole game is basically an extended bad end gallery, mermaid is one of them (see >>739312204)
Mermaids are a popular monster girl type so they have a tendency of showing up in tg games but because of their mobility problems they rarely get much screentime unless they are the focus of the entire game, and like only two games try doing that.

>>739346659
you're damned if you do and damned if you don't, play singleplayer with bots to learn the ropes or something if you're that worried. I would imagine a 4chan team would have some tolerance for fucking around. Worst case scenario they make you play as the team clown, who as of the last time I played was a hybrid morale officer/meat shield. They had a very funny power which made a clown mask work as an dive suit for them, making them the best at extravehicular activities because a clown mask slows you down way less than a dive suit.

>>
>>739346659
you don't need to play efficiently or worry about being dead weight, most players don't know what they're doing, the rest are barely competent and tiny fraction are encyclopedic tryhards that don't mind teaching the ropes to newer players, anyway things are more fun when unexpected shit happens, as is often the case with inexperienced players that press one button and unknowingly cause a nuclear meltdown for no apparent reason
>>
>>739347056
I'm not entirely sure but I'll tell you this much, singleplayer is way, way, harder. You're one set of hands operating your sub instead of your crew of friends. Getting NPC crewmen helps but they're no match for a thinking person. If you are down for the game pitch of "man a submarine in very hostile waters" you will have fun playing it solo.

Technically speaking, nothing.
It's impossible to describe what's wrong with it without going on a long rant about inane shit nobody cares about; except that it's a minimalist "art game" that takes about 3 hours to beat.
It's just that, as an "art game" to me it's kind of boring.
You could do worse: you could be playing Gone Home or Mixtape.

Abzu does have gorgeous art direction and the fish are all depictions of real fish (as far as I know), so despite it being a fantasy game you have that real-world ecology element.
It's just uninspiring somehow, and I can't begin to try to describe why I think that is, without going on a long tangent.

You have to approach it as a literary game, that's what it is. You're going from island to island trying to solve the mysteries and advance their stories, and ultimately get one of the endings or die trying. The actual mechanics of sailing your ship are just there to add tension and let you farm items for progression and money.

It's good so far. They've really trimmed the fat on what they took from BZ and only kept the good ideas so far. That being said, just wait for 1.0. You aren't missing out on anything by waiting. You'll just have a better experience. It follows the same gameplay loop as Sub 1 where you're regularly going back to base, getting new blackbox locations, and then exploring them. There are optional secret bases hidden in different nooks & crannies you can find that increase your inventory & hotbar slots, you'll be coming back to old areas as you unlock new tools, and there is lots of hostile life ready to annoy and jumpscare you. There are also active and passive ability slots that currently are a mixed bag, but will definitely be ironed & fleshed out later on. It's an interesting system that relies on you scanning certain fish to unlock certain abilities, some of which require you to scan hostile leviathans that one-shot you. Half of them are useless but some of them are very interesting. That all said, they have a long ways to go in content, fleshing out systems and polish before the game is ready for 1.0. Plenty of systems feel neat, but not fleshed out at all, like the hardpoint on your vehicle.

So far with what they have, the game world seems to be more oval shaped than circular. I'm not sure if that's just because they haven't fleshed out many biomes yet, or if it's a deliberate decision. A more oval shaped world would make building more bases pretty much a necessity, which I believe is a good thing. I literally have no fucking clue what that guy meant when he said the middle portion of the current game is a "BZ yap fest" because there isn't a single instance where control is taken away from the player for some dialogue bullshit. It's the same as Sub1 where blackboxes and PDAs have story attached to them. That's it.

My recommendation: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1224290/Horizons_Gate/

It's a mercenary sim game where you play a commodore. You start with a second in command and and a shitty ship, and the rest is up to you. Hire crew, buy better ships, expand your fleet, do jobs, explore land location, trade resources, etc. It has a very good class system and is pretty fun to explore in.

My request for recs is for games similar to that. Open world, sandboxy gameplay, ability to just kind of be an adventuring merc doing things here and there, exploring and fighting, etc. Don't recommend Windrose or any other game with body types.

unfortunately, this is the only fishing game that adheres to the objectively best fishing mechanics
>bodies of water contain fish as physical objects
>this means you need to actually direct your lure to where the fish is, accounting for its movement and the geography of the environment
>when you catch a fish, it logically is removed from that body of water
>if there is a rare fish surrounded by a bunch of common fish, you will likely need to catch the common fish to have a better chance of the rare fish biting your lure
>this means that fishing isn't just a boring minigame that spits out some low effort jpeg randomly pulled from the pool of possible fish, like 99% of fishing minigames
this game, and ocarina of time. those are the only games in existence (that I know of) that follow these rules.

>>
>>739383451
I'm just going to spoil you on the horror tag, because it might as well be nonexistent

when you "beat" the game it plays a cutscene where your character is presumably inside the belly of a large creature, filled with lots of opening holes, triggering people with tryptophobia. also I guess the game might be unsettling if you are afraid of dark water, but there is no danger, no fail state, nothing attacks you, the game just has a creepy vibe
>>
>>739369429
I was looking into buying it cause it looked fun maybe and was surprised that it wasn't in the sale. Then I looked up price history. The Raft devs actually made their game more expensive at the end of March, even though the game was released 4 years ago. I'm a bit disappointed. Very homosexual behavior, shan't be purchasing their game.

It's a yap fest because it's exposition but it's not juicy and there's sometimes a few blackboxes/logs next to each other so you have to spend time to listen to it all rather than doing it as you grind. It's not quite as forced as BZ but at times I didn't even know what I was missing because the PDA would start talking over what was playing. There's an icon up top for the NoA but it will always say it anyway and interrupt the log. It's also some forced "remember this character who did that thing for you?" type BS quite a lot of the time which I don't enjoy.

Bottom line is while you can ignore the yapping this time around, there's a lot of it anyway and there's some rough edges because it's EA so waiting is definitely the play. I fucking hate the NoA. It's corny and I just have an irrational hatred of its implementation because it's not diagetic due to pausing your oxygen consumption so you can listen to it there and then instead of just downloading the logs and listening to it while you just continue the grind. It's not rational, it's not that bad I admit, but I just hate it so much.

Critter Cove. Its main driving point is that its New Horizon but on the PC, but it also does some other things:
>You can play as an animal
>Get put in charge of making the Island look nice
>You have to explore, sail, dive to find resource to make the island look nice
>You find villagers in these island that you can invite force them into wageslave for the island
>You turn island into a Tourist Trap
>Your entire island make money base on how entertained your Tourist are
>your wageslave also determine how much money everyone makes depending of their service, good or bad
>You spend most of your money buying more Tourist upgrades to get more tourist aka the House Loan replacement
>You have to farm for food to make and use to sell tourist for $$$$
>There are a few questlines for certain NPCs that lead you to unlocking stuff
Then there is the usual stuff from animal crossing/ The dialogue is the bare minimum with 5 personality. They have Cranky as Grumpy, which act like a bully with low friendship. You can decorate the island, your house, and your villager's house if they ask you to do it. There is collecting items for the museum. There are "daily" quests from your villagers via request or the request board for some extra money and friendship. At the moment, you can only have 21 villagers living in your island. Here is whats listed
https://crittercove.fandom.com/wiki/Critters
Oh yeah, it has They/them bullshit, but you can completely ignore them. You can also have 10 customizable villagers via the Salon, but that very late-game when you unlock a lot of stuff and have tons of $$$. Regardless, I got my moneys worth and I had fun.

honestly, i really have yet to see a game that comes close to how real coral reefs look like. they all look too bright coloured and with clear coral differentiation. real corals usually have chaotic growth patterns and spots of lesser vibrant/dead corals, or bare rock. very hard to pull off but would look even better. ironically of all games the upcoming pokemon is the best rendition i've seen.
