Are beat em ups the best genre in gaming? Anybody can get into them, the better ones have deep gameplay mechanics, you can play them with multiple friends dropping in and out and they’re comfy cig you wanna just play on easy difficulty and punch things.
I noticed you didnt mention that all modern beat em ups have online drop in drop out casual coop. We have alot of gaming grandpas on this board that don't know that.
Most boring genre. You usually find one combo/tech that lets you cheese everything and then it's just repeating that all game.
Whoops sorry, im the grandpa, you mentioned friends. But it's matchmaking for anyone.

Yes, but sadly they died on the vine of arcades and never fulfilled the promise of a transition to 3D, other than flukes like God Hand and Spike Out. Games like DMC have some bmup DNA, but they're obviously not the same, especially due to the lack of co-op.It's nice to see all these new-gen beat-em-ups coming out, but most of them don't really get the genre fundamentals right, and are just cashgrabs for nostalgists.
>>739312696There's something missing.
>>739313020Shredders Revenge, Cosmic Invasion, River City Girls, what else is there? Nothing as good as a Capcom game.
>>739316791I'm still playing Final Vendetta, I love that game, even though it's a janky budget title. There's no arcade bmups that have the same kind of speed and movement mechanics.I really want to beat a Capcom title, Armored Warriors would be sweet.
>>739316791I disagree. They didn't transition cleanly, but modern musou games and things like yakuza, are the successor. Some of them even have co op.Vid related. It's ken's rage.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Du3ujnPTG9Y
>>739320753I never played final vendetta. When I think of movement, I think of shit like AVP capcom.
>>739320753Fight and Rage had pretty good movement options.
>>739321320It's more so having a precise run like TMNT plus a sidestep/dodge like Guardians. AvP has crazy jumping and forward moving attacks, nothing is fucking with that. My thing with AvP though is that I want to fight dudes more than swarms of Giger aliens. The Punisher would be cooler for that, also has unique movement.
>>739321195Musou maybe in the beginning, but the genre as a whole is way too dumbed down and has zero tech, most of the big franchises have opted to no longer be musou and the licensed stuff is always really simplistic.Yakuza is an ARPG. It's a successor to Shenmue which was, arguably, a vision of a "beat-'em-up RPG," but only barely. But Yakuza itself is no more a bmup than Kingdom Hearts.>>739320753It's one of the best new-gen games, along with SoR4 and (sometimes) Fight N Rage, but they still can't touch the classics.
>releases >flops >remains unsurpassed 20y later
Which final fight is the best to you guys? I like 3 the most personally but I’m not a fan of the roster, wish Cody appeared in more than one game, Haggar is like the true final fight protag at this point.
>>739312696>the better ones have deep gameplay mechanicsWhich ones? Because a huge flaw with avp is that it's incredibly broken and the scoring system makes zero sense. And that's one of the better ones.
>>739312696No, but I can definitely see the argument for worst, or most boring, or least real interest.Capcom bmups are by far the worst of the bunch, just braindead combo slop and abusing broken AI
>>739324038>just braindead combo slop and abusing broken AIYou're describing streets of rage
>>739323532Only Final Fight arcade is good. The rest are severely held back by only being able to have 3 enemies on screen at a time
>>739320753DLC for final vendetta was supposed to come out like a year ago I think and still hasn’t
>>739324038>abusing broken AIThere's nothing special about bmup AI, it's the same as routing any game/boss.>don't know pattern>learn pattern>'abuse' itSame thing.
>>739325585Post footage of you fighting a complex beat em up boss
>>739325552>announced last February>4th character>it's the boxer variant named Karen>she's aznThis company keeps getting its releases delayed, but if they say it's coming out I guess they'll manage it sometime after He-Man drops.Would've liked some word on gameplay updates, for example the achievements are still broken by the way level select functions (you can start on the last level and still get them).New music tracks for this game is amazing news.
>>739323903>Because a huge flaw with avp is that it's incredibly brokenPeople just say shit cause they suck, there's 'hardcores' who unironically say there's no point in playing anyone except Predator Hunter, yet there's clears recorded with every character, and Linn and Dutch are cool as fuck. They just want to consoom clears and move on, it's gay.
>>739312696>Are beat em ups the best genre in gaming?Arcade beat'em'ups have great mechanics, but almost all of them require you to abuse the game in various ways, because they are designed to be unfair. Even the more modern releases are absolutely filled with cheap, obnoxious shit, take a look at Ninja Gaiden, for example. Learning how to abuse the game is definitely something that you have to learn if you want to get deeper into them, I don’t like that. What’s worse is that these games are at their peak when don’t lean too much on that stuff, but every single one of them is filled with segments where you have to do some weird things just to get by.
>>739312696There's some good ones but the licensed ones are mostly rubbish.>>7393235323 is the best one hands down.(protip, It wasn't made by Capcom. Check GDRI if you don't believe me).
>>739324336It has unbelievably cheap enemy AI, they get i-frames whenever they feel like it. There's a certain enemy that reads your inputs and can move outside of your attack's hitbox range in less than a frame. It's complete bullshit.3 on SNES is better.
>>739322639Incredibly underrated game. I have no idea why it barely has any presence even among the hardcore players.
>>739321632If anything I'm kinda tired of always fighting dudes. I think that's why AvP, Mystara and Slashout appeal to me more.
>>739328354>because they are designed to be unfairThey're designed to be played with 2-4 players lmao>segments where you have to do some weird things just to get byYou mean bonus levels?
>>739325585action platformers mog bmups hard cause you can actually have level design, so you have to figure out movement and enemy patterns instead of just enemy patterns
Konami belt scrollers are shit and always were. Simpsons, TMNT, Xmen, none of them have the weight and feel of a good Capcom or Sega beatem up.>>739313020Yeah, how dare OP not mention your favorite indie eurofag pixel slop game.
>>739312696I get annoyed now when you can knock enemies off screen and have to sit there and wait for them to come back
>>739331106>have to sit there and wait for them to come backADHD brain.
>>739331152>thinks adhd is realIdiot brain
>>739331106also when you're clearly above/below an enemy, but they hit you anyway cause of shit hitboxes. Or when you're more than half way in the same lane as an enemy, but can't hit them, but they can hit you if they're even one pixel in your lane. Vertical spacing just isnt as fun as spacing in a 3D games.
>>739331349ADHD is just a code word for impatience, which you clearly have.
The captain commando game is really underrated. Why did it never take off? It introduced a lot of features that a lot of beat em ups took from
>>739312696Well I think they are definitely one of the best genres for sure. They were dead for awhile until Castle Crashers revived them. We need more higher budget beat em ups though. I want another game with as much thought and polish put into it as Dragon's Crown.
SOR2 remains GOATED
>>739325585Dodging an attack or jumping a pit or aiming at an enemy is fun and intuitive Abusing one specific comboslop that arbitrarily breaks an enemy's AI is boring and unintuitive.
Vengeance Hunters was pretty fun.
>>739330948I like them too but their gameplay is more basic on arcades. NES platformers tend to have a lot more going on.
>>739330004What emulator do I use to play 3D Sega arcade games? I want to try Spikeout and Slashout. I think with Capcom beatemups there's no wrong answer. I don't think they made any game that strictly replaces a previous one, except maybe SoM>ToD.
>>739329559I don’t get it either. It might be the difficulty
