Assault was good, though. It had the unfortunate fate of being released near the end of the GameCube’s lifespan, barely promoted by Nintendo, and completely ignored by all the dudebro game journos who wanted Halo and CoD instead. Everything worked against it, and then we didn’t even get a Wii game.

No it the foot controls were weird and was 80% of the game.I expect the game that was all about being in a jet for the majority of the series to be about jet combat. And the 4 Arwing levels are nice, but that game has them control like 10% worse. So I'm just sitting there playing a game that could've been good, but fucked it up.

Arguably Adventures did more harm. People didn't even buy Assault because they were burned by Adventures. Also as other anon said, it was hurt by being released at the end of the Gamecube's life, which was already a struggling console, and was a multiplayer focused game with no online functionality. If it released on the Wii and had online play, it likely would have gone over a lot differently.

Star Fox 2 had better on-ground sections because the objectives were not padded shit, the game was made with speed blitzing it in mind because if you linger too much on a single planet, that's asking for corneria's defenses to get fucked compared to being a linear boring game. Really the only prop assault can get for moving the series forward is weapon variety, but that can get shot down by limiting it to on-foot characters when the arwing could very well use that same weaponry if it wanted to.

SF2 is the game everyone talks about as far as "nintendo should revive star fox like this!" type of stupid comments go, but then those same folk out themselves as larpers who haven't touched star fox beyond watching it on youtube.

In an ideal world, shit would be like Metal Slug where you get a cool temporary weapon, but still, as far as so called "innovations" assault made to move the series forward, they were already tried on Star Fox 2. No amount of "But the walker is not the same as playing as the guys!" copium is changing that SF already attempted to be a third person shooter long before.
And hell, i would argue to the death that at least SF2 does not ask the player to rebind their keys, what you get from a dinky SNES controller somehow had better intuitive design than whatever the fuck they were smoking with assault, and that's a controller with two twin sticks in an era after quake was ported to consoles, nevermind that max payne came out 4 years before SFAssault too.

Adventures was fairly well received back then. If anything assault should have even more hype being the game that was promised to be "back to form". If assault came out after 64 I'd be received even worse since I'd just be deemed a worse star fox 64 and multiplayer still worse than its contemporaries on other systems. At least adventures can be forgiven for not even being a star fox game initially and thus isn't even trying to make people think it's comparable to 64. Presentation wise adventures looks and sounds way better than assault so adventures coming out before adventures would have benefited it in that aspect.

the real issue with Assault was just bad timing. the Gamecube was dead, and it was a multiplayer heavy game with no online at a time when online shooters were becoming mainstream. it's a flawed game but it's not *that* bad. not enough people even played it to say it killed the series because of its faults as a game. if they delayed it for a year or two to add some polish and release it on the Wii with online multiplayer it would have done fine.

No. Rail shooters are perfect as they are... and there are not enough of them.

If anything, Star Fox should go 2D and be an honest to god shmup.
If people want variety, there's always using Axelay and Thunder Force 2 as a baseline for how to take the features seen in star fox and pancake them into 2D.
Want all-range mode? Top down shooter
Want basic space levels with cool setpieces? Look at any damn PS1-PS2 era shmup that got 3d in it for setpieces
Want some spice? 2D levels but they double as metal slug/contra-like gameplay
Want Landmaster? Same shmup gameplay but you also account for the ground-level stuff, you can't drive in lava pits after all.

Hell, star fox in 2d would allow for a much, much easier time implementing co-op to the point 4 players co-op with each player controlling a member of star fox is feasible.
