Where did Sonic go wrong?
probably a left turn at Albuquerque
>>739445768The problems with Sonic are:>Core mechanics are difficult to replicate in 3D, hard to debug and focus test so they use the Boost, which is too limited of a style to succeed without a crutch.>Multiple attempts at revitalizing the brand created tribes with their own stated preference which creates problems with direction.>Games aren't afforded the amount of development time and polish they need.>Currently being written by people who do not fully understand the emotional appeal of the brand.Am I missing anything?
>>739445768Lost World.>>739445768
is sonic frontiers a platformer? isn't it like BOTW game
>>739445768no nintendo bonus
>>739446489>>739446575
>>739446753what does this have to do with my question?
>>739447163you mentioned nintendo so the bot appeared
>>739446489Yes but it isn't an exact 1:1 botw rip-off since each place is divided into 5 maps instead of being 1 single world. Also this thread is probably filled with tendies already so you are better not engaging with this thread.
>>739445768Sonic '06 marked the point where people stopped expecting any given Sonic game to be good. There were bad ones before that, and weird middling ones like Heroes, but they spend at least 10 years trying to make up for that one. Shadow Generations was very good and they're at least releasing decent ones consistently, but everyone doesn't want to get burned again.
>>739445768When Sonic Team wanted to focus on making NiGHTS for the Saturn instead.
>>739446489It has big nonlinear areas probably shooting for open world, but it still has seperate areas even including straightforward platforming levels, and you still get through an open area with Sonic running and jumping.
>>739445768Adventure
>>739445768Open world hub is bland.Tacked on RPG progression.DMC combo monkey combat has no business being there.Fucking toggable speed. Basically asking your players to make the gameplay. But really, it all started with Forces.
>>739447651This is also an underrated point, but I have a hard time imagining the game that would have replaced it.
>>739445768Seriously, where the fuck's the new 3D Mario?
>>739445768They never knew what to do with Sonic in 3D. In 2D, the "gotta go fast" concept worked because of the bright colors and the sense of speed but even then, they were already ruining it by having to sell 3 and S&K separately. The jump to 3D was a disaster from day one, and they never really knew what they wanted to do. It's no different from other 90 mascots that were born and died in the 2D era. The difference is that Sega was a bigger company than others and cultivated enough dedicated autists to keep the brand relevant.
>>739445768sonic heroes, shadow the hedgehog, and sonic 06 were rushed pieces of shit. Instead of trying to make another sonic adventure style game but with proper dev times and resources, they came to the conclusion that nobody wanted that due to the aforementioned games so they instead went on to do what they did with the following games
>>739446575This, or rather, that's why Odyssey has such an inflated high score when it might actually be the worst 3D Mario ever released.
>>739445768Not a huge fan of bing bing wahoos, but sonic is pretty limited by its own design. Plus, it was never good. Sonic always felt like a LOOK WHAT I CAN DO tech demo to me, even as a kid. And while it looked cool the constant GO FAST, STOP, GO FAST STOP got annoying quickly. Unironically Sonic 3d blast felt better than the normal sonics, but I haven't played that since the sega channel days where I had to download it in 2 parts. I did like sonic spinball a lot.
>>739445768Are there no Sonic rhythm games? It's no platforming, but 3D Sonic's hallway setup and moveset feels like it'd complement that sort of game perfectly. Plus, the series is known for it's music anyways
