When was the last time we had engine demos showing off the cool new physics they had in the recent years? Just the early 2000's alone it felt like you couldn't go a week without a company showing off some cool advancement in their game engine. There just hasn't been any meaningful progress on that front. A lot of the cool fun games that came out were the ones that capitalized on being one of the first to use the new tech. Which at times led to janky looking stuff (like the source ragdolls) but it ultimately had a ton of soul because that shit just didn't exist anywhere else and you felt like you were witnessing history.
