But the player stats and financials around the game devalues the conversations here as a whole into console war shit.

So instead of people playing Marathon and other extraction games and learning the genre and whether it’s worth perusing for the medium, we’re stuck with people who have a social vendetta against Bungie.

Meanwhile, companies like Devolver Digital invests very little into the titles they publish, and the numerous hits make up for the countless flops. I don't understand why AAA companies aren't copying this business model. The era of esteemed developers making high budget masterpieces (Halo 3, Halo Reach) is dead.

You get gov subsidies simply by virtue of hiring and paying people, on top of the fact that video games (depending on the country) is considered art, and thus the gov will more or less give you tax credits past that point; this is huge, it's much bigger than you might think and it can range from anywhere from 15-ish percent of the budget, all the way up to 50% (tho this last one is pretty rare for big AAA studios, that is a lot of money)
You can also even get extra % when hiring labor from outside your country, and that goes BOTH from your origin country AND the country from which you pick the talent
Then you also get an extra % of tax write off if your product fails to meet expectations, concord didn't net a 300m loss for sony, anyone believing that is retarded (tho it should be the case, but we live in a democracy)
There are also extra grants given to these studios by government because 'it's art', ubisoft is very well known to abuse the shit out of that from canada and france and getting a lot of tax money doing that

So I'm not saying that you're wrong in your assessment that smaller games might net you more long term; but that's not how they see it, in their head, anything that 'fails' to meet expectations has most of its money coming back their way anyways, and then you only need one or two big hits and make 20x more than any indie or smaller studio might be able to put out, and those are very rare btw, we're talking about one big indie hit every, what, two or three months? Out of the thousands of games releasing in that period?

I really wish I could applaud them going for something so blatantly unmarketable and unpopular because having even the slightest bravery in design is so rare when you're non-indie
but they stole the artstyle so they can't even get that, it's just bad on all levels
