If you start up condemned in the dark with over ear headphones you will be scared. Never been scared of a game till I tried playing them in the dark with headphones.
It's the only way to play horror if only because you can't hear the sounds in the actual direction they're coming from properly.

It literally has a guy in this sadistic fucked up voice whispering in your ears at random times saying
>You're gonna die tonight
>I'm gonna kill you
>You're dead
And last but certainly not least
>Heavy breathing that starts far away and eventually gets right next to your ear.

Resident Evil 7 is the scariest game ever made

Especially when you get to the ship and face the horror of playing that dogshit section for the next hour

Depends on what spooks your gook but I always recommend Afraid of Monsters: Director's Cut.

>Walter Sullivan, the main antagonist of Silent Hill 4, was inspired both design, story, and personality-wise by the lead singer of the American band Nirvana, Curt Cobain, who committed suicide by shooting himself in the head, and Kamiya, one of the main characters from the 1998 PS1 survival horror video game published by Atlus, "Hellnight" (known as Dark Messiah in Japan). A serial killer who killed his victims using handguns

Huh. I learn something new about Team Silent's Silent Hill games every day
>>
>>739464695
Source?
It could be a coincidence unless a designer confirmed it
>>
>>739464695
What I love about Team Silent is how "connected" (tapped in as the young lads say) were with popular (american) culture. Twin Peaks, Satanic Cult craze of the 90's, rock bands, pulpy scary movies of the 80's, those green military surplus jackets, etc...
While some other games try to show hints and small tokens of Japanese culture (which is relatively unpopular outside of weaboo fandoms), Team Silent went full on western culture. Capcom did the same with Resident Evil, maybe that's the reason they are beloved on the western world compared to Clock Tower or others.

The game Hell Knight came out in 1998. As far as I know it wasn't a well known release.
A popular Japanese manga also begun publishing in 1998 about a coat wearing pistol dual wielding serial killer.
Starting to understand the problem now?

Also, I completely understand the disdain; loud, short, overdone (not as much at the time) psx style, etc, but I just really enjoy the very blunt Slasher flick-inspirations in their games.
I feel like many harrar games don't lean into that as much as they do. Dare I sound extremely pretentious and say that the jank adds to that idea.

You're not wrong (although the DE has a Jumpscare volume slider lol).
Huge cop-out answer, but I just can't explain it very well.
It was one of the few games that I had a hard time actually moving forward in. Fucking loudass noise was a part of it lel.
The atmosphere was heavy, even with no sound happening. It was just pretty effective for me, I guess you could say I was scared haha.

I could swap it with Sniper Killer or maybe Out of Hell, I guess. Maybe Penumbra Overture.

a lot of people don't like to admit it but stalker games. I don't necessarily mean the nemesis type where you're making a mad dash between save rooms but the basic premise of you being alone with something actively hunting you. there's just no comparison between something actively stalking you and a gauntlet of gremlins walking around in circles..

i like 1 the most but yeah 4 does the best job when it comes to immersing the player into the role of the playable character. the narrative, aesthetics, gameplay systems all come together in a perfect way to make it feel like you ARE Henry in a life or death situation desperately bashing monsters heads in with a rusty axe to get Eileen out alive. I like the thumping rhythm of the ambient music it really gets the adrenaline pumping and makes every environment feel dangerous. I think it is the best interpretation of an "action-horror game" ever made. The RE4/Dead Space style lean too into shooter territory where you feel too powerful but SH4 feels like a desperate fast paced struggle the entire game even though the combat system is the main focus

I love the imagery of running down the stairwell of Walter's psyche between every level

I think that's true of most horror games. Sound design is a lot better at creating tension than visuals or writing. I always found some of the odd noises with no clear source or explanation kind of unsettling in the Silent Hill games, like that one room where you can occasionally hear glass shattering.

That's a bit subjective, but here goes nothing:
>Dead Space
You can have all the guns & ammo in the world, you'll die around the next corner, by some grotesque abomination
>Evil Within
Same
>Fear & Hunger
Saving is a cointoss, infections everywhere, limited resources, you'll die starving in the dark, alone. Also everything wants to raep or eat you - you can try getting a party going & find some good equipment, the game still hates you and wants you to suffer. You will suffer.
>REmake 2
Mr. X is just scary af, that fucker is unstoppable & wants to paint the walls with you. Also see DS & EW
>Subnatica, anything underwater really, like Beneath
Fuck the ocean & its critters, but I got a phobia so
>F.E.A.R
Just a great atmospheric shooter with magnificent AI; see DS, EW & RE2

There's more horror game I enjoy, but they're not *actually* scary, like The Suffering, Manhunt or Area 51. Awesome games tho, even if old.

the first couple of hours of Voices of the Void are fucking terrifying. when you figure out what's going on it just gets goofy
>>
>>739472583
Based. I genuinely love the random environmental scares in that game. There was one bit where you head upstairs, and they framed the shot so that your character is visible, and the bannister is blocking the hallway, then as you reach the top, the camera moves slightly to the right and there's a figure standing on the staircase where you just came from. The shot is only for like one second before the camera switches to the next view, and it doesn't have a sound sting or anything. It's so well done, I jumped out of my skin.
There are heaps like that too, yet you might never actually see half of them unless you replay the game. It's a shame that the shadow monster QTEs get so repetitive and there are a few bullshit instant deaths, because to begin with at least, it's really fucken stressful, and they train you very well to check doors etc.

being vulnerable is scary, you can accomplish that with rudimentary controls.
There are no good modern horror games because devs are soulless goylem homunculi incapable of feeling human emotions like fear or uncertainty.
Penumbra and Receiver 2 have mechanics suitable for a horror game.
Silent Hill f has combat completely unsuitable for a horror game, made even worse on ng+++ where Hinako becomes a GOD - dodging, weaving and obliterating enemies with combos and perfect counters.
Health, stamina, and weapon durability in a horror game shouldn't be visible to the player until NG+ or however long it takes for the player to stop feeling scared based on his frontal lobe developing pattern recognition towards game elements and mechanics.

SH2 is a lot of things but "Scary" isn't really it imo. Once you're just playing it, it's suspenseful, tense, uncomfortable, makes me uneasy. But it is never "scary". It really doesn't have moments where you're afraid to turn the corner or something like that. It's not even "creepy" either. It's just bizarre and uncanny.

I just finished it, and also played Born in a Wish. I have the US Greatest Hits version and the EU Director's Cut becuase I didn't know they were the same thing, so I beat the original scenario in the NTSC version and the sub-scenario in PAL so I could get a feel for the difference.

I got the Leave Ending, which I think is the best ending? I examined everything as soon as I got it, and apparently that triggers something with Angela.
On the whole, I really enjoy it. I get why many will call this a masterpiece. I'll need some more time to digest what every detail meant, and there's loads of symbolism and metaphors happening that I can't fully explain yet.
I got the gist of the story that James isn't really guilty. But I think the story sends us through the rush of emotions and 5 stages of grief that a guy can go through after he loses someone and feels like he could have done more. You get the denial, where he's only read the first part of her letter, or selectively only thinks about that part, even though he knows the rest of what she wrote and can't process it yet. So he goes back to the town, and believes he's punishing himself for the ill intent he had towards her during the worst part of her sickness, but then at the end we experience with James the fact that she forgives him, and he needs to stop punishing himself, thereby also accepting that she is no more and he has to live for himself again. The other characters like Eddie all act as foils to James thinking he's like them. Thinking he's suicidal (Angela). Thinking he's a killer (Eddie). Thinking he's a liar (the child/innocence).
Are any of the characters real? Maybe. I think Silent Hill 1 (which I just played early in the weekend) established that the town has some kind of drug that's spread in the air and causes hallucinogenics. 2 also briefly touched on this in a note you find, saying all the patients of the ward had their "own realitites".

It's one of the most thoughtful games of 6th gen.
>>
>>739493608
Oh, oh! And I forgot to mention another detail that took me aback. Sometimes after you come out of the Otherworld (typically the Dungeon Segments) the way the environment looks is as if "This is how it REALLY looks the whole time". You go into the hotel during the white fog, and it looks like a hotel would in a literal ghost town. It's as if it should be inhabited but there's no one there (except a few monsters maybe) and then you go to the Otherworld where it's red and hellish. But when you come out it's totally rusted up and ready to fall apart. I like to imagine that Silent Hill in present year in each game is an abandoned town where many died, and there's something afoul in the air, but in reality there's just no one there, and the buildings have decayed for many years. This doesn't add up with the chonology of "3 years ago". but it gives off a strong impression that nothing in the town is actually the way that the player sees it for 90% of the experience, but that there is a "Real" version of it underneath the dreamlike state we're in.
>>
I kinda like those walking through a haunted house and maybe do some puzzles games that russians like to make for some reason. There's one that just came out called psalm 2 where it's a bunch of bite sized sections like that and most of them were alright.

That was also implied in the original when you see the pills Maria takes where James suspects she's sick like Maria, during the Hospital Otherworld part. And there's a bit more of it in Born from a Wish when Maria has to fetch the White Liquid to Earnest.
>>
>>739494525
>i hope the 1 remake touches more upon the sh city because it's really vague if it's actually lived in or abandoned and they can never decide
It's Lynchian. It's as undefinable as anything in a David Lynch movie, and giving a definintive answer to either suggestion only introduces plot holes and further issues you have to address, so it's better to let it stay evocative and let people decide which truth they think makes it a stronger experience for themselves.

I like to think it's a real place where tragedy happened, so it's been bordered off, and only a handful of strange fellows go there. And once you're inside it, reality becomes quite subjective. I want to believe Cybil exists, but I also have the headcanon that once she went in, and met Harry at the bar, she gets just as lost in various hallucinations as him, and then the only experience that matters to us is the version of events Harry experiences as we only see the story psychologically from his POV. But then, they do get out and have an adoptive child together, and SH3 basically canonizes all of that as having really happened. So it probably is all meant to be real, but you can't really explain it.
>>
>>739494925
This.

There's something about the nature of playing a video game which means the suspension of disbelief you can get from watching a film or reading a book which is required to be scared just doesn't work. You're acutely aware it's just a video game and therefore it's inherently not scary. All they can do is jumpscare you.

>>739495457

Exactly this, and I don't even react to jumpscares anymore. I'm simply too old and jaded and can just tell when a "scary thing" is going to happen. Horror games are too predictable.
>>
>>739486998
It's a fun game that has some really tense moments; There's some cheap jumpscares but they're few and far between. I thought that the second third of the game dragged on a little bit but I'd definitely reccomend it
>>

IMO every horror game is worth it for the scare factor it has initially, which wears off as you see through it and experience the lack of consequence. A great proper buildup from before the first monster to after is always great in a brand new game. Like playing the Obscure demo, that shit burned into my mind because I played it not even knowing it was a horror game, and it begins with a slightly eerie vibe but otherwise it's just an "adventure game where you're some guy in school".

>>739459897
Silent Hill worked so well as a horror game because its an 11/10 in its use of sounds. Whether its the monsters growling or the radio making the monsters have even spookier sounds. Then there are those environment sound effects that often seem like they blend in with the music. No game I ever played made such a masterful use of sound like Silent Hill. I am sure some indie developers have emulated it by now but I have not played those games and they most certainly were inspired by SH. Sound is super important because look at what happened with some of the monsters from SH4. You guys know which one in particular is especially egregious.

The whole context-driven stuff, where there's a chase system that can happen by chance or "when Mr. X is nearby" like RE2 Remake, but then each room has a couple of hiding spots that can or can't trick the pursuer? kino. I wish we would see a modern game like this from a major publisher.
