XC3 had the most mechanically complex combat system and proceded to do absolutely nothing interesting with it by designing everything right down the middle with very little variation or imagination to spice things up. XC2 you had multiple different layers of ways with dealing with enemies, you had elemental weaknesses, physical/ether weaknesses, seals you can apply to shut down certain debuffs and the ability to swap blades with different attack styles meant that at the very least the AI can at least be effective if not optimal. XC3 all it has is the ether/physical defence ratings to determine weakness which is fine on but they are also typically immune to the debuffs associated with the style that they are strong against. And when the classes are broadly exclusively split between ether/phys and you can't switch mid fight you end up with a bunch of characters that end up dead weight which is only amplified during elite/boss battles where the ether/phys swing can be as much as a 60% damage difference rendering tanks incapable of holding aggro, DPS incapable of effectively dealing damage and healers that rely on damage to heal being unable to keep up. Don't even get me started on rage status either almost every single one is enemy both takes/deals more damage which really doesn't change the battle flow very much unlike XC2s rage affects which did a bunch of crazy shit often completely changing how you apporached the battle.
