This is such a criminally underrated game.I got it like five years and had fun for a bit but my pc was bad and it lagged so I stopped. Got a notification for a big update on steam a couple days ago, reinstalled, and I've been having such a blast. These guys built their own engine, their own dev tools, and built something so unique and fun I don't know why I wasn't reminded of it sooner.
>play for multiple hours>trip over literally nothing and fall into a pit>>haha this game is soooo hardcore there are almost not checkpoints, enjoy doing everything again :)
>>739469717It really is a fun game, the devs should be beaten for taking a decade to make it, but it's still fun.
>>739469908>there are almost not checkpointsoops you gone and done an ESL, boy
>>739469717dude i've been eyeing this...somebody sell me on it.
>>739469908nigga those bumps in the floor aren't texture maps that's actual terrain you did the dungeon equivalent of tripping on a crack in the sidewalk
>Game enters early access in 2015>Has been in development even before that>Game has been worked on for OVER a decade>Still not fucking doneThis should be grounds for your game to be terminated from Steam, lazy faggots
I love how it looks now especially with the bevor
>>739469717It was a neat experience the eight or so(?) years ago when I played it. I think it was just a dungeon with a single NPC last I played? That NPC would follow you to help out. Eventually I ran into a big guy I couldn't beat. I mean like he was a giant compared to my guy. After that I dropped it. Just not in the mood to do all that all over again every time. I don't even remember if the game had saves. Don't think so. I'd be willing to steal it again if it had way more stuff going on then that time.
>>739470010You feel like a retard until you orgasmically get a grasp on how to kill things and then it's some of the most satisfying killing in any game. It's also strangely immersive. I usually put videos in the background playing games, but they'll finish while I'm playing this and I won't even notice I've been playing in silence for an hour.
>>739470068>easy 20 hours of gameplay with an incredibly unique and detailed dungeon crawler>15$Fuck off retard, there's many other games that have done less in more time and charge more money for it
>>739470068This is not unreal slop that can be pumped out at a goy daycare, they made everything from scratch.>>739470463There are autosaves when moving between floors and when closing the game. There are more levels and enemies now. I still think that npc is the only still alive guy and you can bring him all the way through the game or he can just die.
>>739470638I dont give a fuckIt's been almost 15 fucking years
>>739470463Sir (the big guy) is the easiest enemy to learn because the last checkpoint you get is right at the portal so you can literally just keep reloading to immediately run in and fight him over and over until you figure him out. 100% sure the devs did that on purpose to make you learn to stand and fight against bigguns.
>>739470683>It's been almost 15 fucking yearsYeah, and this is just their proof of concept for the game they really want this engine to be for and it's still better than most of the shit on steam. You're malding about them having passion for something.
>>739470683>I don't want good games made by passionate autists>I want my slop and I want it nowgo back to your GTA VI hype thread faggot
>>739470764>>739470794You faggots are the reason shit like Star Citizen exists
>>739470696Last time I killed him I jammed myself into a small room behind a desk and he just couldn't reach me over it and I poked him to death with a tiny knife lol
the whole physics based gameplay gets old real quick
>>739469717I love this game but so much of a playthrough is just beating up naked zombies while you wander around the first level. 90% of players don't see anything cool like armour, monsters, or magic
I have no idea where the fuck to go. I wish I started drawing a map when I started playing.>>739470862How?
>>739470821Except this isn't a 800 million money sink with a crew of hundreds. It's like one guy, with a limited budget making an entire incredibly specific and detailed physics engine from scratch. And it's already worth its cost and fun if you aren't some faggot sharing about version numbers.
>>739470638>starting NPC still thereThat's great. I went out of my way to keep that guy alive so hard.>>739470696Hearing there's saves or checkpoints is good to hear. I was genuinely into the game when I was playing it so long ago. Just dipped out at that dude cause I'm almost positive at the time I would've needed to restart the whole thing. Which I recall doing a lot for the week I was obsessed.
>>739469717>early accessthis is the only thing putting me off from playing it
>>739470909If you have the compass, just keep heading North that's where the exit is for the first 3 levels>>739470924You get checkpoints right up until that portal after that you're SOL but if you were scrounging you should have enough armor to not get a lot of red damage from fights
>>739470534thanks anon
>>739470940I still haven't experienced the whole game yet. I think it's worth it right now even if it's never finished personally, but considering how in the recent post the devs called it their "life's work" I doubt they'll abandon it. I mean just the fact that they've been still working on it for this long shows they're dedicated.>>739470987>that's where the exit isI know where an up and downstairs exit is here but there are locked doors here and I can't find the keys and I have found NOTHING valuable here so I know I must be missing something and I don't even know if I should go back to the crypts or go back upstairs. I am LOST.
cant wait for sui generis...
>>739471116Keys for the doors should be in the nice looking desks you can search, you can also find the level maps in them sometimes. If you're on level 2 then one of those keys unlocks something very nice next to the court room looking area
>>739471039The levels are very detailed and logical. As in you can tell what each room was meant to be, why it's got what it's got. Entirely different artstyles for levels, different floors and walls and room shapes to convey different cultures and purposes. The progression from being happy to find a leather vest and a knife, to being fully decked out in plate armour welding a flaming halberd and cutting through underground mushroom monsters. Combat is punishing as fuck, but very satisfying and intuitive once you get into it. Hell you should see some of the videos of people learning how to use the shield to trip an enemy or wrap a flail around your defences or jab a spear into someone's neck between their plates. It's got the potential to be the best combat in any game ever made if the jank is fully smoothed out. I've got 100 hours logged in it and that's worth the 15$ to me easily even if he ilneber finishes it
>>739471210forgot pic
>>739471243I've searched everything I have seen so far and not found keys in that area...I think it's a segment of floor three? I went into the crypts and then went up a different staircase. I'm going back up to I think floor two. Any way I don't want it spoiled I'm just blog posting. Thanks for the advice.

I have 118 hours in Exanima. I can confidently say that it's a bad game. extremely ambitious and unique, but clearly designed by people who aren't good at designing a game. 11 years into its early-access and it never manages to become more than an aimless tech demoto put it less succinctly: combat is often times arbitrary, exploring is mostly a waste of time, and progressing is frustrating. the biggest draw of the game, its physics engine, is exclusively detrimental to the gameplay. once the novelty wears off, you realize there's no depth to any of it and you're just constantly fighting against the engine while it tries to sabotage youthey update the game every other year to add one of 3 things:1. extra layers of superficial mechanics like spells so you can cheat through combat, or procedural gear generation that you couldn't possibly ever notice while playing, or vague emergent NPC behaviours that never amount to anything in the actual moment-to-moment gameplay2. a new area where you can do the same thing you do in all the other ones, but with one or two new unique weapons to add to your inventory3. yet another rewrite of their physics engine / rendering engine / procedural weapons engine / whatever engine that never improve the gameplay in any meaninful wayyou get nothing out of playing the campaign besides vague lore snippets, since there's no finality to it whatsoever. the ultimate objective is getting the strongest equipment you can so you can stare at it once you've killed everything. there's also an arena mode which is just a number-go-up skinnerbox for you to enjoy as much of the shallow combat as you want. the world the game takes place is moderately interesting, and it's cool to learn more about it as you naturally discover new areas and read the notes left around. unfortunately, all of it is hidden behind a game that's never able to find its footing (because it tripped on a piece of geometry. that's the punchline)
>>739470534There is nothing satisfying at all about the combat in this game though. There's no weight or force behind any attacks from you or the enemies. Most of the time you just slap each other and deal or receive chip damage.Game looks and sounds amazing though. But the actual gameplay gets stale quick. The physics engine is touted as being a super important thing but in reality all it does is cause you and your enemies to constantly fall on top of each other.
>>739472320You type like a redditor and your shits all fucked up.>a dungeon crawler doesn't have much to do except crawl dungeonsHoly shit, I never thought of it that way.

>>739472496>no weight or force behind any attacksDid not play the game.

>>739472663>make engine>tweak engine and add content>content has long since surpassed price of admission>retards bitch about it Meanwhile AAA games spend a decade being made with billion dollar budgets and crews of thousands only to churn out absolute slop using a premade engine that does all the work for them and you gladly lap it up like the dipshit you are

>>739473505it'll take a decade for 1.0 to drop
>>739472496I eventually started using this to my advantage.I suck at combat so I started luring enemies into empty roms then barricading the door from the outside. Or littering the ground when someone's pursuing me so they get stuck and fall. If I'm lucky I can even get a headshot while they get up.
>>739472320>the biggest draw of the game, its physics engine, is exclusively detrimental to the gameplay. once the novelty wears off, you realize there's no depth to any of it and you're just constantly fighting against the engine while it tries to sabotage youthis is unironically just a skill issue.

Love this game and I hope it gets to a finished state. I dont know how it is now past floor 3 if there are more check points but I did some save scumming in like 2020 and got to werewolf area before getting stomped repeatidly. I like the little puzzle areas and jamming timed doors or levers with junk on the floor, or almost soft locking my game because I made my charactrr really fat and squeezed through a little dead end gap. The funny physics create lots of emergent gameplay quirks
>>739474679To my understanding wasn't the "finished state" meant to be a seperate game, and this was the tech demo for it? Then the dev dropped the idea of the seperate game and is just adding content to this tech demo instead
>>739474721Ya sui generis or whatever. No clue if that is happening. 1.0 for exanima maybe this year though I wont hold my breath.
>>739475097what the fuck is a 1.0 exanima gonna be though? Just the same old tech demo with better lighting and another 3 levels? It's kinda pointless to try and flesh out something with no structure like this.
Do I just throw these away? I'm guessing they were health potions and are just empty forever now...
>>739469717>Having a blastDo all you shills get your scripts from the same writer?

>>739475179there're some bits and bobs scaterred around some of the levels that don't do anything, but look like they should. if I had to guess, 1.0 will bring everything together and give these objects a purpose so you can "complete" the campaign, with a final boss and then escaping

>>739478293nope, but the nv helm looks cooler now and has some new eye effects
>>739478293Our game is too hardcore for you traveller. Go back to your kid's game soulslike

>>739478563If you play the hellmode mod the nv helm gets replaced with a cowl you wear under helmets
Game has one of the best combat systems ever made, but most people will never enjoy it because it's so different than literally anything else
>>739478762Some of the hellmode mod sections felt like memes. I get that may be the point, but I was really hoping it was going to be more of an overhaul and not just a kaizo mode mod. The early zones were fun, later ones are just like "lol 10 armored demons in a closet" or things like that.
>>739478865You didn't like the flaming skull flail demon hallway fight? I hated the fact that you cant use his flaming skull flail I love the flail let me use it hellmode devs you fucking faggots
>>739469717Is the engine the new grail or nah
I really like the journal feature. It's fun keeping in character notes of things you find, trying to piece together where you are and what the fuck is going on. Also fighting the ogre is really fun. Fuck those statues though
I still have no idea if some of the armor/melee skills do anything. Like the riposte/feint or the security/deflect skills. Feels a lot better to just go fully into magic and armor weight.
>>739479472>ripostelets you instantly attack after a block, very good for fighting enemies that use weapons>feinttop tier pick, lets you press m1 to ready an attack, bait the enemy ai into launching an attack, the hold m1 to actually attack and get a clean hit in, particularly good for enemies with long weapons that keep blocking otherwise>securitygood for when you have good armor, you basically don't get staggered as long as the hit doesn't do real damage, very useful, as normally even getting tickled cancels your attack>deflectstraight up increases your armor's hitboxes, making overlaps larger and weakpoints points smallerDid you know you can forget the insight skills like inversion and union once you learn the spells? It's a nice way of freeing up skill slots.
big fan, love the atmospherenever could get used to small steps while fighting, so i learned how to swing pull power and "beat" it
>arena mode>the further you advance in rank, the safer it is because you start packing heavier armorGoing back to early ranks with an advanced character and shitting myself in panic because suddenly I don't even have something to cover the face and some random fuck with a cleaver can just instantly end me with a lucky strike. Kinda wish it wasn't so grindy tho.Fucking hell this thing have been in EA for a decade now and the best they've got is remodeling the weapons for the nth time.
Die by the sword already did the physics combat thing and it sucked to play back then. I bought this on release and finished what content there was, then never touched it again. It's really disappointing.Honestly I'd rate this as the best game ever if it just had conventional controls. Call me a casual all you want, but give me something akin to what deep down was going to be, or a gritty, dark and spooky modern version of something like rune over another mouse-flailing physics sim like this and half sword or that other gladiator one any day. Also, Co op or arena vs. Gimme that shit.
>>739470338What is the brush for?

It was already sluggish for my pc in the last update and now looks like its worse with all low. Owari da. Pretty cool though I had to run into some portal last time and managed to cheese one big ass fully armored dude but another one killed me. Definitely bludgeonmax in this game for crushing plated enemies, even in the earlier map/level, edge or stabbing weapons are useless imo.

>>739485046idiotstupidmorondummyfoolmentally insufficient
>>739469908I agree, the permadeath thing is something that's supposed to be in Sui Generis because the world is supposed to be persistent so when you die your death affects things and time passes. It makes no sense in Exanima where it just boots you back to the main menu or the few checkpoints that exist, it just makes it annoying. It does increase the tension, but it's not worth replaying the first 3 fucking levels over and over again.
derrin is a fucking retard
The thing I like the most about this game is how the physics system makes things logical and readable.>meet huge guy>by being huge I already know that:>he's slow to accelerate and turn>will probably outrun me in a straight line>is very strong and durable>I should use a long weapon with good reach to stay out of his swipes>I should NOT try to get into a wrestling match with himCompare that to something like Elden Ring where the giant boss suddenly does 15 pirouettes while balancing three swords on his nose, jumps and stops in the air for 5 seconds, then teleports behind you.

If they add achievements in 1.0 this will be so fun to 100%. Are they still planning to make the other game?
