Sony bought 100% of Bungie for $3.6 billion in 2024
Disney bought 9% of Epic Games for $1.5 billion in 2024

Sony could have bought 20%~ of Epic Games for what they paid for Bungie and gotten infinitely more value lmao

That is not how it works retard.
Investing in a company is just taking a cut of their profits.
buying a company is gambling that they can add value to your products.
iirc sony was apparently buying bungie for help with GAAS games, which seems to have backfired (idk why as they are still popular with the normies)
They didnt buy bungie specifically for their IPs or portfolio.

The sentiment still stands: Sony wasted a fuckton of money.

Its a gamble. This is what investing is anyway but in this case it is a strategic investment. There are certain terms for it but I am not a /biz/tard.
Using your OP example to explain. if it came out sweeny was a pedo the stock of epic would tank and maybe even games stop being made on UE, all epic shit crashes etc. That would lose disney their invested money.
Sony invested money to try and make a strategy to make their business stronger. They took a risk.
The payout if it worked could have been even more profitable.
