There's a lot of details that feel like they're just "off" in a way that makes them seem like it was intentionally changed (i.e. there are towns of cowboys that write in Eorzean and work in ceruleum drilling/railroading but they're actually all natives and there's no real friction between them and other natives).I could go into more detail but that's the long and short of it. It's like a Stormblood situation, but the story is ACTUALLY quite awful and the good content (which is more hit-or-miss than SB) is held back by bad job design. Anybody that's trying to defend the story is just being contrarian to the doomers who say that the game is ruined because of its bad story. The story IS utterly dreadful but that doesn't mean the game is over forever or anything. And the story does improve a bit by 7.2, and each patch after gets progressively better.

Just caught up with the 7.4 and 7.5 MSQs. I don’t think either of these were that great. 7.3 was really good, one of the best patches of all time. .4 and .5 though feel very fanservice-y, where the actual plot setup for 8.0 is done in two short cutscenes. There was even too much fanservice with the trails and FF9. Even Krile had her chapter because the devs want to rectify everything the players are yapping about. The whole thing seemed to just be wrapping everything from 6.1 to 7.0 up as quick as possible to just get into Heavensward 2.0 and reboot the game. Not terrible, but we don’t really need this level of resolution, we already got it from past patches. I did notice though right at the end, Calyx had a unique cutscene animation set, which makes me wonder if that was a preview of what’s to come in 8.0’s select cutscenes.
