And while I understand and agree with your argument about the player character not being as concrete as in JRPGs, that is kind of the RPG part, you're supposed to supply that yourself, in your head if playing games alone instead of pen-and-paper. In that sense you could say JRPGs are not really role-playing games at all, they are role-watching games.
