>>739497632Agreed, replayed the first 3 last year on PC and holy shit I still enjoy them.Even PoA, while more polished seems to lack the raw soul of the first 2 but I still find it a very cozy experience. The art style, SFX, music is all shockingly good for what's essentially low budget tie in slop.Kinda reminds me of why Majora's Mask was so good, the insane crunch time and demands from Nintendo made an impossible gem, maybe the same pressures from hitting movie releases and hitting the bullet points WB/EA gave the dev teams did the same trick.
>>739498267God that was such a comfy room.I consider Chamber of Secrets to be the more enjoyable game but it was a slight downgrade in atmosphere and visual design.
>>739497736How did they do this without raytracing?...

>>739497478I don't know the proper terminology for what makes video game graphics look the way they do, but I thought PC games looked like shit as a kid despite everyone telling me they were better than consoles. I played FFXI on the PS2 and thought it looked so much better than every other MMO. Then I finally had to move to PC and suddenly it looked like utter dogshit. I don't know exactly what my problem is, though, since I don't know the nuances of computer graphics. If I had to guess, it would be something like the low fidelity of old TVs (CRTs, maybe) obfuscated the jaggy look of low poly models, smearing the edges to make them look more rounded than they actually are. When you look at these games on modern screens or monitors, with different technology or higher fidelity, you realize the models are actually not very good. So FFXI didn't look better than all those PC games, it looked identical to them, my TV just blurred out the bad parts. This is the extent of my knowledge on video game graphics.
>>739498491heres real time reflections back in 02 on Doom 3 john carmack wanted doom to scare people and he understood that lighting is the most important part of an enviorment. This is actually why he made doom 1 and 2 have proper lighting and not just textures so you could feel mre immersed and get scared.https://youtu.be/-TFq_wyYBJU?t=103This is also why all lighting in game is generally shit or boring because devs keep using unreal default realism lighting in their games. So the games either look the same or clash so bad it looks horrible.
>>739504748Light isn't everything most scary stuff that sticks with you is sound
>>739504748But why was everything past Doom 2 turn based?
>>739504708It gets all kinds of complex but one thing to consider is that in some areas the ps2 had hardware that vastly outstripped pc hardware for years which if devs leveraged those elements meant when porting cutbacks had to be made. A prime example is silent hill 2 - the fog effect is something the ps2 is very good at doing and trying to get than density on other platforms would murder performance so it was stripped back in ports.

>>739504371All of them desu. Chamber of Secrets on Ps2/GameCube is probably the most polished one. Feels like a Zelda game and has more story beats than the PC version. The GBC versions of both games are RPGs that I think probably include the most story. GBA versions are trash in my 15 minutes of experience playing them. Just worse versions of the PC games. The PC games are what I grew up on and I'm biased towards them. They're soulful and have the best looking versions of Hogwarts IMO. But I think they're also the easiest versions of the games. Like, you never have to choose which spell to cast, the puzzles solve themselves, enemies are practically 0 threat, and secrets are telegraphed to you. I remember renting one of the PS1 games as a kid and there was a segment that was really hard so I never got far. Haven't played the PS1 games since. >>739504987People did tell me that about FFXI. They said the weather effects only work on PS2. I don't know if that's true, but I can't recall ever seeing weather effects on PC, so maybe it is. One thing that really stood out to me was the ghosts in the Gusgen Mines. On the PS2, they look translucent and fade in and out, like ghosts, but on the PC, they just look like green polygons sitting there. It looks terrible. But it's not one thing in particular I disliked about the game on PC, even just watching my character run through the world, it looked janky in a way I never felt on console.I think it's just that a low resolution hides the imperfections of low detail visuals. When you increase the resolution, you can see more detail, but that's assuming there's more detail there worth seeing. There might not be. Or it might be the opposite: there might be more detail, but it makes everything look worse because the developers knew what the players could and couldn't see and designed their game around that fact. Now you can see all the frays and pimples. So it's like getting an Extended Edition of a movie or seeing something that was made in 4:3 now in widescreen. It sounds good because it's "more stuff" but it's really "more stuff you weren't supposed to see and probably for a reason."

There are still good games, but there are a lot more games now, so a lot more visible shit. But people who live in Brazil and post on phones (most of /v/) "play" games via Digital Foundry and Asmongold, so they make their judgements based on those.
>>739508939The PS2 was still fixed function shaders, which meant you had to work with what Sony gave you. Modern consoles and PCs allow you to program shaders to do whatever the hardware is capable of within the horsepower.
>>739509124I mean, yea kinda it was a fixed pipeline but it also had a lot more freedom, it's kind of closer to DirectX10 but also not really. You could write a lot of crazy shit that just wasn't possible with regular DirectX8.It was more to say that if DirectX12 existed back then the ports would probably have been better assuming the devs gave a shit.
>>739499304calculated shadowmaps didn't start becoming common until the 00s, and even then a lot of ps2 games were primarily vertex colored. shadow maps were expensive in terms of texture memory. psx generally was vertex only.

Plenty of anons in this thread have a good eye but don't have the resource, time, or technical skill to make good looking 3d assets. With AI, you can pretty much sit on your ass and tell it to fix your texture until you like it. I already use it for subtle things like color correction and flattening angles.
>tfw there will never be a huge modern-scale harry potter game that matches the vibes of these games which takes advantage of the simple aesthetics to easily pack the game with high quality content>create a very basic character in a very rudimentary character creator>pick a house>go to classes>explore hogwarts (with gamey magic bean collecting and so on)>fully fledged side activities (optional) such as the duelling club, qudditch, potions club, even frog choir>most students are nameless NPCs, but there are several named+fleshed out characters per house>house points system>end of each year brings an opportunity to edit your character's appearance (somewhat) as they are now older>become an expert in certain subjects, less skilled in others>game ends when you graduate hogwarts

>>739513657just wait 15-20 years and you can prompt AI to create this for you
>>739514595We're basically there already. I'm vibe coding 2 games at once right now. They're both Zelda-likes so they have a shared library which makes development faster. It helps that I have SWE experience so I know what to prompt for. We're not quite at "single prompt game" yet.
This was a huge nostalgia wave for me. These games were my childhood. I think the Chamber of Secrets was even the first game I ever played (aside from baby educational games and stuff like Dr. Seuss interactive books)I didn't know how good we had it, these games were pure distilled artistry, and just exuded the magic of being a wizard in Hogwarts.Third game kind of dropped the ball, and I didn't really like the fourth one.Order of the Phoenix was just bad, but for some reason I wanted to get the Half Blood prince too, which I played once and never again.Man, I really didn't have a lot of options for games to play as a kid.
>>739508192Because 2d/3d artists don't understand scope creep or limiting game size and try to make too much at once. It takes some practice before you get a feel for how long sometime actually takes vs what you think.
>>739514801I'm trying to make a game the good ol' fashioned way with my bare fingers and brain.Still, I'm intrigued about pure vibe-coding games. What AI are you using, and are you overseeing what it's producing, or is it just "Run it, see that it works, save it, and move on to the next prompt"
>>739497938>Being that kid who was so good at a game that you would be invited over just to beat sections.

>>739507279yes.
>>739515609I'd start with the psx version.
>>739515596Is it the first 3 harry potter games that have soul before Goblet of Fire and they started to make them straight film adaptations rather than doing their own thing?
>>739515609I've always played the PC version, so I'm biased, but it's really fun. There aren't too many actual puzzles in it, but it gives the illusion of being a puzzle game pretty well. Mostly it's an exploration and traversal game with some light action elements.Aside from that, there are tons of collectables and bonus secret areas to keep an eye out for.Granted, it's probably not the best gameplay wise. You unlock spells, but most of them are different keys for different kinds of locks, and there's no actual choice, they're all just point and click and it picks the correct spell for you. Most enemies are handled the same way, either cast the spell to beat them, or cast the spell to stun them, and cast another to push them into the defeat hole.I think there's only one enemy type that you encounter before you unlock the spell to kill it, so that's something. Spongify is a lot of fun to do, and the stealth section in the Slytherin Common Room was pretty challenging for 6-year old me. (Also kind of scary being chased and shouted at like that)fuck, I need to replay this game again now.
Why yes, I do enjoy pushing turtles into pits.
>>739515927Yes. It peaked with the 2nd game. The 5th game (Order of the Phoenix) is actually worth playing but it definitely follows the movie's aesthetics too closely.
>>739515927Pretty much. Although the first films had soul, probably because of Chris Columbus involvement.
>>739515968Hey thanks alot for this. Sounds fun actually. I'm looking forward to it.>>739515702thx
>>739513657They might make new series of games for the series. There would be no magic in it whatsoever
>>739515927I'd say the first two had the overflow of soul, the third one was teetering over that line with the art style and gameplay change (still good though) and the Fourth one killed it all by turning it into Diablo. I still have fond memories of the Goblet of Fire though because it at least tried to have the puzzle solving and exploration rewards from the previous games. There's only two spells you can unlock, but you get a lot more spells in total, even if most of them are combo spells only usable under certain circumstances to specific enemies. Stuff like stunning a Gargoyle, using Carpe Retractum, then someone else spamming a jinx uses Melofors that transforms their head into a pumpkin. If you're a fan of the franchise, It's still worth a look. Unlike the Order of the Phoenix, where the whole game is about doing side quests for random students so they join Dumbledore's Army. Then you watch cutscenes, do some simple puzzles, wander around an admittedly very well crafted Hogwarts open world, then you're done. That's the one that was solely preoccupied with just retelling the film. They even face scanned all of the actors to drive that point home. I played Half Blood prince once, and remember liking it a bit more than the fifth one, but I never came back for Deathly Hallows. I heard they just turned it into a linear cover-shooter
>>739516051>>739516060Thanks, will have to look into it. I didn't like how as the games went on, instead of being their own adaptation, they just used assets, likeness, music etc from the films, those first few harry potter games have a unique identity.

It improved as people learned how to visually arrange moving elements in a way similar to how a painting arranges still elements.Graphics, by your reckoning, have "improved" linearly as more time and money is poured into the hardware. Thus, they're not comparable to cinematography. They're more like the rise of CGI, right down to how hard they stagnated and even regressed some ways in the last 20 years or so.

>>739542258In that they're maybe not "good" and most are no replacement for real old visuals, but they encourage developers to make something visually comprehensible without requiring full on art skill, thus having positive knockdown effects on design?
>>739496667>You're not gonna believe this. He destroyed 16 horcruxes. Guy was a Gryffindor.>His graphics looked like dogshit.
Dammit, I started playing this game, and I think I soft locked myself pretty close to the end. This platform is stuck that low down. As much as I try, I can't grab onto the ledge on the right. I think it's just too far down because the secret area on the left is way too high to jump to.I can't kill myself, I can't cast Lumos again on the Gargoyle, and I can't reload a previous save because there was a save book right as it was happening. Is there some kind of save editor or debug command I can use? This is some bullshit right here.
>>739507156Where is the yellow paint on the bridge? It's literally an incomprehensible maze and I have to backtrack all the time. BAD GAME DESIGN
I have an addon that let's me see IPs. 150 of the posts in this thread are the same person btw.

>>739496667>these seething repliesIt blows my mind how halfwits only understand extremesYou can hate modern photorealistic graphics, but don't go around saying that shit like this looks amazingWe can have good graphics and art direction without going back to blocky dogshit garbage that these games had ONLY because of hardware limitations at the timeRetards can only see 2001 blocky graphics where vertexes were literally flowing around on your screen or the modern photorealistic 5090Ti only UE5 slop. There is no inbetween.
>>739543038Well color me surprised, there actually is a debug console. I managed to superjump harry into the next room, and get that damned card.
>>739543651The Harry Potter games are trash kiddo

>>739505065>sound cant really be scary unless its blasted at high volumes or given context to be scaryQuiet, low levels sounds or discordant music go a long way to setting a scary theme. Doom would be way less scary if they were blasting Tiny Tim in the background

>>739547675>motion blur, bloom, volumetric fogWhy would you have those on on the first place?
>>739548310because they're on by default when the game is installed
>>739496417Bonus points if you played the non-burger clap version of the PSX HarryPotter1 where he sounds like an actual britbong kid aged 10, instead of some random US teen faking both an english accent and sounding prebubescent.

I think the pinnacle of graphics was Wizardry Online.
>>739550245
For me, it is Thief / Dark engine style graphics
>>739550560I don't get Thief, you have this cool semi steampunk victorian settings with themes of occult and what not, but all you do is steal golden teapots and whack english drunktards in the head

>>739550560For me its your mom sitting on top of my cocktail>>739550245I've never heard of this but I remember when Wizard101 was being marketed to Harry Potter fans. I never actually played it back in the day because all the gameplay shots looked terrible. There were a few BYOND Harry Potter games back in the day. They were all run by emotionally unstable teenagers so there was always the risk of your save file getting nuked because some guy's gf cheated on him or some shit. Those also had shit gameplay but at least they had explorable Hogwarts with secrets. Pretty sure The Wizard Chronicles is still being hosted.

>>739553330Same but with the Deathly Weapons edition.
>>739496417modern graphics are pretty good.
>>739498491technically it does have raytracing, ue1 uses baked lightmaps
The death of Richard Harris is one of the worst things to happen to the movies. And the movies were one of fhe worst things to happen to the franchise. We should either make a remake of the Harry Potter video games with the artstyle the book illustrations had, give Goblet of Fire the proper game it never got, or use AI to turn Harry Potter into an animated series without any recasting or Niggerdry
>>739499129I read Barry Trotter and listened to Dirty Potter AND listened to JIM DALE>In England going back all those years I was a NIGGER TRAIN
>>739496417>modern graphics are a mistake>console are holding games back>I cant get 300 fps in UE5 games with my 4060!Holy shit there's no winning with you people
>>739496667This is Netflix's don't fuck with cats all over again.
>>739496667sippy bippyand I say this as a boomer
>>739534760There are certainly floods of turdies pretending to be based oldfags and calling everything new "slop" in an attempt to fit in while crying about all new games and engines and tech they don't understand, but that doesn't change the fact that graphics were cleaner, more readable, and more aesthetically pleasing before the PBR era. Modern games with PBR and GI really do all look like sterile plastic covered in fog.
>>739542128>Play any fun ones recently?I only play fun ones. Honestly, just pick any mission with a rating of like 7.5 or higher on Thievesguild and make sure it's a style of mission you like (if you hate tomb raider missions, don't play those) and you'll have a good time.
>>739544098I'm putting off all the big Dark Mod missions until I've cleared a few more T1 and T2 missions. The only ones I played were the intro and then that lightly Christmas themed one.
