There's a school of thought that gameplay is the end-all and be-all of what makes a good game. That may have been true when games lacked the ability to tell stories. Gaming is at its best when it's the convergence of multiple artistic elements into an interactive medium. If the gameplay and gameplay alone was all that mattered, then gaming peaked with Pac-Man and Space Invaders. And I doubt anyone under the age of 50 believes that.

Good or at least passable gameplay is necessary in the moment, but it's the broader presentation: story, visuals, tone and personality that lingers and makes experiences more memorable.

No one's saying that it's the only important thing, but it's the thing that should carry the game, not the story, not the graphics, not the music. It can't be considered a good game with bad gameplay, and the only people who think otherwise are idiotic secondaries that think story is the most important thing in every medium and wonder why fruit paintings exist at all.

In what world does that make sense?
Those games are very simplistic and nowhere near the gameplay later consoles had to offer.

It's easier to play a game where the gameplay is spot on, but everything else is questionable, over the opposite.

What they mean to say is that cutscenes and dialogue suck and get in the way.

I agree OP. You're right that games are at their best when they're a multimedia effort that creates an experience impossible in other media

>that creates an experience impossible in other media
Space Invaders is genuinely impossible in other media. If the game throws a star wars cinematic cutscene, it's POSSIBLE in other media. That is just a movie.

never and I mean NEVER ask a "gameplay is king bruh" retard to post his playtime in shmups, fighting games and whatever those retards refuse to play despite crying online about how games are just movies nowadays

When did games ever lack the ability to tell stories?

Nobody's talking about cinematics lil bro

I don't care. I play/read for the story.
Gameplay or prose is secondary for me. Mario 64 and Lolita are great, but they're not the reason i care.

A story won't fix a bad product.
A book with bad writing is a bad book.
A play with bad acting is a bad play.
A game with bad gameplay is a bad game.

Bad twists. Poor character development. Unlikeable endings.
