Are the ys games good?
>>
yes those are all of the good ones

and you have to play on nightmare difficulty or you're a pussy
>>
>>739518837
Ys 1+2 is a poorly designed game with crappy combat and awful bosses.
Origins, Felghana and 6 are certified classics and amazing games with great bosses, and simple yet addictive combat. Excellent stuff.
>>
>>739519180
can i safely skip the first 2 games or should i look up the story for them
>>
Yes, they are the most quintessential videogames that exist IMO, don't forget SEVEN
>>
All Japanese games are slop.
>>
>>739520715
Don't listen to him, Ys 1 and 2 are must-plays. Just play them after Oath in Felghana and Origin, those are better to start with.
>>
felgh > origins > 1&2 > seven > lacrimosa > every other ys game > the second newest (goth town) > the newest (vikign shit).

Apologies to the napishtim fans i couldnt get into it.

Napishtim is one of the last Ys games I played, it's just genuinely a weaker Felghana and Origin. Like, it's okay and still fun and worth a playthrough, but I can't say much more
>>
>>739521393
faggot infant commentary
>>
>>739518837
Felghana is excellent. The others range from very good to shitty. I'd get one to start and decide if you want another after.
>>
>>739520715
They're about going to Ys. It helps to know what happens in them, but the games are generally written as a new adventure without much connection to the previous.
>>
>>739518837
>5 bucks
I just bought origins for switch for 38 euros fuck.
And oath and lacrimosa's prices won't ever go down...
>>
what even is the play order for ys?
>>
>>739522874
It doesn't matter but going release chronological will allow you to follow the evolution of gameplay.
>>
>>739518837
Yes, and those are generally the ones to get. Cut Ark of Naphistim if you have to save money but get the other 3.
>but what about later Ys
Ehhhhhhhhhhhhh, you can try Seven sometime I guess? None of them are essential, really. You really do have the good ones there.
>>
theyre 5 dollars each, you tell me
>>
>>739523234
People swear by lacrimosa.
>>
>>739518837
I haven't played VI, but I thoroughly enjoyed the other 3 in your cart.
>>
>>739523448
I got a few hours into it and dropped it. I was fatigued by Seven and especially Celceta, and the whole "stranded on an island" premise isn't a favorite of mine. I actually think IX looks way more my speed, but I don't think I've seen anyone say it was good.
>>
>>739523570
IX isn't great but the movement abilities are kinda cool. Running up walls in the first "dungeon" to some guy going apeshit on a guitar was a fun novelty.
>>
>>739519039
>>739518837
Almost all the good ones. Dawn of Ys is missing.
>>739520715
They're like 4-5 hours long tops just play through them and determine if you like bump combat. I personally like how the PCE-CD version feels more for combat but Ys Chronicles+ is still a great way to play them. If you find you do like bump combat btw, check out Xak: The Art of Visual Stage on MSX2. Lagoon on Sharp X86000 is also okay (avoid the SNES port. Even if it has some interesting differences they fucked combat up hard). Good visuals and music, adding jumping to a bump combat game is cool.

ys 8 is good
my waifu dana is real in my heart

yeah
Ys II is one of the best games of all time, with a soundtrack to match
the old anime is worth watching too, it's not groundbreaking or anything but its a fun watch
>>
>>739524641
I liked the Ys 1 OVA a bit more, but 2 is cool. One thing they both get right is actually using music from the games.

what did you guys think of Proud Nordics?
disregarding the scummy nature of how quickly it was announced after the release of Nordics
i really liked it, Karja was great and the ship stuff was comfy, very cool story payoff by the end
i still wish we could go back to the napish combat though

1 and 2 are badly designed, especially 1, ditch them
>>
The only one I tried and finished as Ys Origins and it was pretty good.
Tried VIII but it was boring so I quit.
>>
>>739519180
Beat me to it
>>739520715
It's about a redhead who saves a kingdom in the sky, you will never hear about this detail ever again for the next 10 ys games
>>

if you can't beat Ys I on nightmare you shouldn't be allowed to post on this board
>>
every Ys game is good
>>
>>739525324
This boss is masterful game design and I'm tired of pretending it isn't. It's a boss halfway through the game that REQUIRES the player to have mastered the combat, so that they're properly prepared for the rest of the game
>>
Everything before party Ys is pretty cool. Party Ys is alright but mediocre as fuck.
>>
>>739525403
Adol never gets the girl, any girl really
>>
>>739518837
BRO IS SPENDING MONEY ON VIDEO GAMES LMAO
>>
>>739520715
1 and 2 are genuinely awful
>>
>>739525476
party ys is carried hard by its great characters (at least in the case of 8, 10, and to a somewhat lesser degree 9)
>>
Disregard anyone saying 1 and 2 are bad, they're both great, especially 2.
>>
>>739525454
Nah it's a piece of shit with bugged hitboxes

you can but it would make you a big bitch
unless you proceed to beat felghana on nightmare as your first game then i would kneel
>>
>>739524631
The second half of Ys VIII is pure kino
>>
They are all good games but if you try to binge play through all of them in one sitting you're going to be miserable.

they're kino but don't play them first if you don't want to. i played them like 4th and 5th, i loved them from the very beginning because i was already attached to Adol
>>
>>739525692
I was having a great time binging the series (1, 2, Wanderers from Ys, Dawn of Ys, 5, Ark, Felghana, and Origins all back to back) until I got to SEVEN, which I refunded on Steam because something about it didn't pull me in at all and I haven't played a newer Ys game since. I went back and mopped up Mask of the Sun on SFC some time later and it was neat, not bad, not great. Out of that Ys binge the only times I wasn't having a great time was like, one boss in Ys 3 (I admit it's kinda shit but I for some reason love it), 5 (which was both too easy and a little boring, wish Ys V Expert was translated), and Origins (It was good but I much preferred the other two Ark Engine games)
>>
It's funny how Ys is one of the only franchises which first games are the worst while the newest ones being the best

>>
>>739525904
Lmao what an outburst. I moved onto Brandish after I dropped SEVEN. Why would a faggot like me like 8? What makes it so special? At this point rather than more Ys I want more Xanadu. Like a third scenario for Revival Xanadu.

Yeah start with Felghana
>>739525851
recently gave Dana a shot and spent nearly 250 hours on it so much it was good, never played seven though
>>
Felghana > 1+2 = Origin > Napish > 8 > 10 > 9 >>> Celceta >>>>> 7
none of the games are bad however
>>
>>739523570
9 is basically the same game as 8, so it makes sense to complain that there's not much new. A few of the abilities like running up walls and shooting a grappling hook are pretty fun, and Ys 8 is good enough that it's entertaining playing it again.
>>
Y(e)s
>>
>>739525275
It was nice to see some new things and some ambition. The pair up mechanic wasn't great, and I still prefer Oath in Felghana.
>>
>>739526325
i still enjoy them, but the newer Ys games have a sort of "weightless" feeling to the combat
really rustles my jimmies
>>

I really tried playing Ys I & II and Ys III: Wanderers from Ys on the PC Engine, and I thought they were awful.
The dungeons felt generic empty corridors, and the story was practically nonexistent.
The only good thing was Yuzo Koshiro soundtrack.
It’s a shame, because I really wanted to like the series due to its unique atmosphere that reminds me of an OVA or an ’80s anime.
>>
>>739525962
just the fact that Ys SEVEN of all things somehow filtered you so hard within 2 hours that it made you refund the game and instantly give up on a series you enjoyed enough to marathon 8 games in
actually i guarantee you just read faggots on /v/ say the party games are shit and believed it, lmao.
>>
>>739527153
I'm sorry I didn't like it? I could give the game another shot. I've done it with other games I initially didn't like, like Deus Ex. A couple of attempts later and it clicked for me and became one of my favorite games. Tell you what, I'll wait for another sale and I'll rebuy SEVEN and try it again. I'm willing to admit that maybe I was just burned out on Ys at the time.
>actually i guarantee you just read faggots on /v/ say the party games are shit and believed it, lmao.
No, I try games myself before coming to a conclusion. If I didn't I'd of never played a lot of stuff because "oh that game's shit" or "oh it's outdated" or whatever.
>>
Ys II = Oath > Ys I = Origin > Seven > Napishtim = VIII > X > IX > Power gap > Celceta
>>
>Are the ys games good?
Nope.
>>
>>739518837
hell yeah
>>
>>739525976
Dana is the only one I played and I thought it was great until I got to her part; dropped it a few hours later.
>>
Only thing stopping me from beating Ys II as a completion autist is that child molester achievement. I don't want that on my Steam profile.
>>
>>739525454
bro it's unbeatable you have to get lucky
