I only got into the family of Men of War type games about three years ago, but recently I tried Ostfront and it has me totally captured.Assault Squad 2 has way more content (and mods) than this game, but they've been buffering GoH lately with the American and British DLCs. They are pretty overpriced, and frankly needing to own the original Call to Arms (poop) to own the base game is really gay, but the stellar sound design and improved visuals make it totally worth it for me.Many say the Eastern front is overrepresented in WW2 media, but nowadays with the lack of ANY WW2 games in general, having my personal favorite front of the war being the main focus still has my pants wet.
seems like its only good for pvp but i havent played
>>739522301It's bretty good, I feel like it does a good job of bridging the gap between more traditional WW2 RTS's like Company of Heroes and more hardcore simulation driven games like Graviteam Tactics and Combat Mission.I still prefer the latter, but I still have basically every Men of War (minus 2)/Gates of Hell and hundreds of gigs of mods installed. It's a shame Call to Arms: Panzer Elite is so shit, that would have been my perfect game if it was more simulation focussed with something akin to the dynamic capaign generator mod for Men of War.Then again in a post War Thunder/World of Tanks world, suffering is all we can hope for.
>>739524585damn combat mission looks cool. any recommendations of which game to try first?
>>739524585>>739525038i second combat mission, it's like chess but with military units.. and it has a shit ton of sub ai systems like unit fear, platoon spotting and communication, and medicingpick one that you think interests you and try it out, but be warned it is VERY hard at first to understand the ui and mechanics but once it clicks its very fun.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6KeApbO3BY&t=3salso join the discord (yes its gay to do this but the game multiplayer is through email (yes really) and the biggest collection of pvp players exists on the official discord)
ive been told the unit AI is even worse than in mowas2
I get into a weird streak of autism in the missions where I play in slow motion speed 1 the whole time trying to clear the mission with 0 casualties and playing perfectly.Sometimes it takes me like 4-5 hours on just a single mission. IDK whats wrong with me.Pic related, I also have to recover the bodies under heavy fire of any fallen AI men so nobody is left behind...
>>739525038>damn combat mission looks cool. any recommendations of which game to try first?Honestly, the best advice I can give is to go with whichever theater/period you like the best.I personally like Final Blitzkrieg and Battle for Normandy the best because of the units available and focus on smaller, tighter engagements with hedgerows and the likes. The more modern games focus more on much more open maps and tank/ifv combat and a lot of infantry leap frogging fire/supression in the open. Fortress Italy is generally considered the best WW2 one, but again I feel like personal preference is more important.Make sure to watch a bunch of youtube videos to help better learn the games, they're deep, but a little jank and can be hard to get into, but once things start clicking there's nothing like them.
>>739525278thanks for the info anon.
>>739526107cheers. I'm leaning toward fortress italy but might go shock force 2.
>>739525643>please lord, help me get one more
>>739522301I love it and it's an IMPRESSIVE work of TECHNOLOGY but even with all the QoL there's a bit of underlying jank that you need to understand and overcomeIt is a great game and this is what W40k IG game should be and in fact there's a great mod for it. But to play with people, there's not enough rules that you can customize to make it interesting outside how many battlepoints you get with time and things like that. I would like to play with a small-ish squad and a tank vs another player instead of the spam, i mean, to be enforced to use the plethora of tactics of itStill incredibly underrated as a game
>>739526253>cheers. I'm leaning toward fortress italy but might go shock force 2.Both are extremely well regarded and considered the best so you can't go wrong if you like the look of them, there's also a decent modding scene as well. Although a lot of the communities/sites are dying so you might have to dig around for them. There are some good mods for Shock Force 2 and Fortress Italy in this pack.https://www.mediafire.com/folder/izmk6muctniv5/Combat_MissionWe desperately need Steam Workshop support to preserve a lot of the older mods, having them all hosted on a single site/forum run by boomers who are presumably kicking the bucket isn't ideal.
Separately but relatedly, I liked Men of War 2. I don't know why it gets so lambasted. It's kind of abandoned now I guess. But it was fun at release.
>>739526562vro we need so much more then steam workshop lol, we need UPNP hosting, a generalized ww2 bundle that isn't $250 and ofc the upgraded engine they've been teasing since forever (apparently its based in unity?)either way there's nothing like Combat Mission and I'm super happy to see more people playing it, I fell in love with them after trying the older ones out on GoG on a whim.
>>739524585Ostfront is exactly the type of game I was yearning for when I tried CoH for the first time. Whole era of playing that game was just "man I love this game but I wish it was a lot more realistic".
>>739526773Yeah everything is in a bit of a sorry and very greedy state. Honestly I think we just need a new, young studio to make a competitor to Combat Mission and Close Combat. Combat Mission has been going full lipstick on a pig for a quarter of a century now, Close Combat is just full flogging a dead horse mode, and honestly those in control of the IP's are very stuck in their ways and honestly just don't have the technical ability to move the genre forward. I mean if their idea of an upgraded engine for Combat Mission is hobbling together something in unity, the series is fucked.Mind you I think genres are starting to blend a lot, heavily modded ARMA 3 played as an RTS is a very good experience, ARMA 4 will probably be even more so. I regularly create combat mission style WW2 missions in ARMA 3 and play them that way.>>739527019Yeah that's what Men of War/Ostfront has always done really fucking well, it doesn't stray to far from just being an RTS, but it adds all those simulated rather han abstracted systems, line of sight, armour penetration, ammunition types, inventory, logistics, destructable environments etc. It's a great balance whilst still making your dick hard with how much of a spectacle it all is.
Redownloading the game after a while it will take forever...Also is there a 4chan group or something that plays these type of games ?(also do tanks still have xray where they will move the turret or whole tank to face enemy throught wall/building and just get raped from side ?)
So Steel Division is truly dead then
>>739522301>What if RTS but not comically oversimplified to the point where tanks are just bigger infantry with more HP?Seriously shocks me that most RTS doesn't simulate tanks being, well, fucking TANKS.
>>739526667How is the game now ? Game keys are like 2,19euros
>>739528118>So Steel Division is truly dead then2 needs proper SP content and less DLC. If they created proper campaigns/missions and made the game more about tactics and strategic planning and less about hyper competitive APM deck building MP it'd still be alive.MP games have very finite shelf lives, SP games have very long tails in terms of sales, often decades. And in the case of SD2, no ones dropping $300 to buy into a dead MP game, but they probably will go down the Hearts of Iron IV rabbit hole etc
>>739522301It would be a good game if it was an actual RTS. Units AI is too retarded to rely on. Anything of yours that isn't under Direct Control is basically worthless.
>>739528543>How is the game now ?Abandoned, buggy and broken. Literally no reason to play it if you can buy the earlier Men of War games or Ostfront.
>>739527995/vst/ is the board for strategy games specifically, if that's what you mean. There's occasionally LFG threads, but rarely for the MoW family of games, unfortunately. All units in Ostfront have a "line of sight" type of intel that's instantly shared for all units, so if at least one unit can see an enemy, a tank behind a wall for example will track it if it's the most opportune target, but I've rarely seen the AI shoot through buildings and stuff. If it happens often, I don't notice it enough for it to be annoying to me. I usually use direct control for most of my tank engagements both for fun and effectiveness though.
>>739522301It's good but frustrating to play. You have MP where everyone is either a buckets-of-sweatlord who will annihilate you in 5 seconds or a braindead cretin who doesn't know how to move his units. Switch to SP and the AI has a similar dichotomy, either aimsnapping to oneshot your tank from across the map through 5 house windows around a bush because one pixel of your tank was spotted, or it will just keep throwing waves of men headon into your guns and lose horribly.
>>739528624>Abandoned, buggy and broken. This sounds like a significant overstatement, it was hardly buggy at release and fairly quickly fixed, and it was never broken unless you count always-online which is also gone. Abandoned maybe.
>>739528739I primarily play it for the PvE. Co-op in this game is great to screw around in, working together for silly goals like just stealing every enemy tank is ridiculously fun.I'm scared to play PvP because of the sweatlords, because I know they're swarming this game. Pro games I've watched are filled with so much direct control meta it doesn't seem very fun to me.
>>739522301It's shit. I've played the entire WW2 franchise, and GoH has the worst AI and performance by far. It is the only game in the series where I noticed that your soldiers don't fire when they should, and it runs like trash with more than a couple AI teammates. Vehicle AI is also shit and it used to be that vehicles towing artillery pieces would kill the crews when they drove over bumps in the road and shit. Took literal years to fix that.
i like the horten's frontline mod, fun to play with friends against AI, and has also been the only time i've seen the AI successfully employ the gerat ever
>>739522301>needing to own the original Call to Arms (poop) to own the base game is really gayi think they changed this recently so now you don't
>>739528118yes. still barely populated, but never releasing a map editor like they promised limited its potential a lot.maybe in sd3...
>>739529325They changed it a while back, but it's inexcusable to sell a full game as a 'DLC' of a completely unrelated game.
>>739522301It's a glorified mod with busted AI
>>739528694>/vst/ is the board for strategy games specificallyIm reading the Ostfront thread and they are shitting on ai pretty hard and i like Vietnam vet am getting flashbacks to ai too>>739528962Which was/is the best MOW now ?Also i seen some guy rec Mow1 "Dynamic Campaign Generator mod" >>739529379nta but yea that shit is too expensive god bless the creamapi
>>739529434Depends on what you want. AS2 has the most mods by far, including full conversions.MoW 2 has the best gameplay and SP, but the community never embraced it.
>>739522301Love the game but they really need to add more countries.
>>739522301I enjoy it for the various single player modes, mods & skirmish.
>>739524183I exclusively play single player. There's enough content for a single player enjoyer. Wish there were more skirmish missions but there are mods to fill some of that gap. After dlc, there are quite a lot of campaign missions.
>>739529595>MoW 2 has the best gameplay and SPIt has fucking tank healthbars, fuck that.
>>739532269They've always had healthbars retard.
>>739532358Tanks always had durability but they never fucking showed you a big immersion breaking healthbar lmao.Additionally MOW2 is fucked and tanks pretty much never become 'disabled' they only ever blow up.Compare it to GoH, where the aftermath of battles often has heaps of uncrewed but servicable vehicles like in real life.
>>739532448Because the other games didn't let you repair the hull, retard. MoW lets you take vehicles off the field for repair. Everything else is literally the same, including parts breaking. It's ok to admit you never played it. But it is thanks to misinformed morons like you that you missed out on the best the franchise has to offer.
>>739532750Are you retarded? You can repair hulls in AS2 lmaoMaybe try playing the fucking games you're talking about you redditspacing nigger.
>>739532823No you can't, idiot. You can repair components, but never the HP of the tank's body.
Why the fuck are people still seriously comparing Men of War 2 (Mixed with 5k reviews) to Gates of Hell (Very Positive with 30k reviews)? Like your opinion literally doesn't matter. MoW2 is objectively bad.
>>739524183I play compstomp with my friends all the time and it's fun.
>>739533084Yes, yes you absolutely can lmao.If the tank outright explodes in AS2 you can't repair it because, well, it blew up.But if the hull is 'destroyed' without being obliterated you can repair it.
>>739522301for starters, you haven't needed to own CtA to play this for years. they removed that requirement.secondly the dlc's often go on sale for well under ten dollars per. With that said it's a pretty nice game. definitely scratches the ww2 itch harder than say, company 3. It is pretty jank occasionally and GEM engine doesn't really run all that great at least for me in matches of 3v3 or higher. The enemy AI is quite good. They use smoke, throw grenades, position crew weapons deep into their territory, mass infantry at the cap zones, disable armor with at grenades and molotovs. Finally the lack of matchmaking for online is kind of unfortunate. The online is peer to peer. plenty playable, just not really as smooth as one would hope compared to say, company 3. Overall if you can get the base game for 9.99 which it routinely goes on sale for, I'd definitely recommend supporting the dev. Every time i check back in with the game, they are still updating it.
>>739522301Awful>have to control every, single units down to what fucking hat to wear>all to just play normally or the shitty ai shoot at the wallNah, never understand retards who play this type of rts
>>739533218>it's the same!So what you are saying is that there's no difference at all and you are just nitpicking?
>>739533190hows the ai
>>739534112It's not anything special, it's not like they will play like a human or conduct complex maneuvers, but it works for the game, if you rush they have a ton of AT hidden everywhere so you have to be careful and they send waves of units to take over objects, it's kind like a tower defense game.
>>739533438>>739534350The GoH shill has arrived
>>739534032Tanks in MOW2 outright explode every time they die.Because it can't handle high unit counts so you're limited to like 4-5 squads lmao.
>>739534513>inventing shitYou are this low IQ brownoid, aren't you
>>739535320>You can't capture enemy vehicles>Actually you CAN unless you are at your command cap (you will be at your cap at all times), so yes you can't capture enemy vehiclesLol, lmao even!
>>739535414>the game has the same rules as all the others, that's bad!
I really like it. It has completely replaced company of heroes for me and it's got the talvisota which is a huge plus
>>739535667I don't rememeber the other games preventing you from capturing enemy tanks because of CP limits.
i feel like the vehicle ai got fucked with in the latest update they seem to want to avoid fences whenever possible instead of just driving through them like they used toi also feel like the ai for british vehicles is more retarded than for german/ soviet/ finnish
>>739535667None of the other games prevent you from repairing vehicles due to arbitrary unit limits lmao. Also, 99% of MOW2 vehicles explode on death, while AS2 vehicles are often intact.
>>739535414>>739535828>>739535962The Forever Moving Goalposts>nooo you can't capture enemy vehicles>you can>NOOO BUT THEY EXPLODE ON DEAD>they don't. in fact, abandoned vehicles are so common that people go over their unit capLooking forward to the next exciting episode of "I didn't play the game but a retard youtuber told me some lies about it"
>>739534032you assblasted stupid fuck are just arguing simply to cover up the fact that you don't actually know what the fuck you're on aboutholy shit MoW fanboys are retarded
