Let's try something different. For those that have played at least one: What's the first RPG you ever played? WRPG, JRPG, ARPG, SRPG, anything else under the collective banner. I'm not being too picky as long as it is a video game. As a bonus (and this also works for those who haven't played one): What's the first RPG you were aware of, especially if it was different from the first RPG you actually played?Optional Hard mode: no Zelda games. Less so because of the arguments on whether it is or isn't an RPG, but more specifically because it would probably be an answer for too many replies, and that's a little boring.
super mario rpg: legend of the seven stars (snes) [by nintendo]i had no idea what an rpg was at the time, but the game looked radmy friend got a hold of it and we played it at his house
Probably same as >>739525149Otherwise it would have been pokemon red or like...magination on GBC.I don't think I played an final fantasy games until the remakes on gba.
>>739524936It was either Suikoden or Digimon World 3. Both were at an age I couldn't read, so progressing was hard. On the upside, it motivated me to learn since I enjoyed them.
>>739524936Probably Final Fantasy 1. When I was a kid in the 90s I believe it was the only RPG I had for the NES. At the very least it is the first one I remember
>>739524936Chrono Trigger, I played Mystic Quest at a friends house sometime around then too.>>739525464I played Chrono Trigger and Earthbound around the time I had just learned and was excited as FUCK to read everything I could even if I wasn't 100% comprehending everything.
>>739526334forgot to mention picrel, I didn't know "hide" also meant the skin of an animal so I thought "hide cap" was a cap that helped you hide from enemies.
>>739525464I could barely read when I played Zelda and just fumbled about. By the time I actually played what I thought was my first RPG in SoulBlazer, I could at least tell what was happening, but it wasn't really registering. Doesn't help that SoulBlazer is kind of trippy.>>739525381Fuck, I should have said no pokemon either.
>>739526593>get the hide cap>it doesn't hide you
>>739524936I trade-borrowed FF1 from a friend in my class and didn't get it at all so didn't play it much until we traded back. the first one I really got into was the first breath of fire
I had a weirdass timeline for my first RPGs>play my actual first in Super Mario RPG on SNES"wow this is weird but I actually like it">read about some big new upcoming RPG everyone is shitting themselves over (FF7)"wait, RPG? I know what that is">buy it, think it kicks ass, despite not playing quite like SMRPG, and see in a different magazine ad that the final fantasy legend trilogy and adventure are getting rereleased and I'm like "wait there's more final fantasy games?">get Adventure because it looks kinda like zelda and have a good time>buddy borrow-trades me Legend 3 for Adventure for like a month, surprised by all the weird stuff in it even more different than what I played before (he also had FF3 (6) but he wasn't willing to trade it (I think because it was his older brother's))>have to trade back before I can finish beating Legend 3, and I want to buy it used at FuncoLand, but I noticed Legend 1 was cheaper, so I buy it>I am completely sidewinded by how different it is, even compared to Legend 3, and the general weirdness of both the gameplay and the world itself captivates meWeirdly enough that's the game that really makes me want to try other non FF-RPGs like Chrono Trigger, Quest 64, and so on.
>>739527619That's a trippy ass jump. Going from knights and wizards straight into the monster mash with werewolves, oxmen, and fishjews.
>>739525464Also, I liked to do pic related a whole bunch. Thought Marco was a gambling grandma too, kek.
>>739528776>gambling grandmaWait, it's not?!I didn't get Marco (didn't even know his name until now), but that's funny.
>>739528927Nope, Marco's a 13 year old boy.https://gensopedia.org/w/Marco
>>739524936Probably quest 64. Or Pokémon yellow
>>739524936Played FFIV and VI (then II and III) on SNES with my uncle since they had pseudo-multiplayer and we'd decide who got to use each character. I dragged the old man back to do it again when I found out FFIX had it when it came out, too.Couch co-op JRPG is a genre that I think only these few games actually occupy and god I wish there were more.
>>739524936>What's the first RPG you ever played?Master of Magic. C64. Didn't know what an RPG was, it was just a game on one of the disks we had.>What's the first RPG you were aware of, especially if it was different from the first RPG you actually played?Possibly Ultima 4 on the master system. I remember reading about it in mags and i think that might have been when i first came across the actual genre name "Role Playing Game".
>>739529264>Master of Magic.*Actually i think it might have been Wizardry on the C64 now that i think about it....
First one I played? FFVI but got filtered by Vargas and I was too young to really read or understand a whole lotFirst one I beat? Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
>>739529248I think tales of symphonia on gamecube let you play with up to 4 players, 1 for each character in the active party, but I can't imagine having to just sit on your ass during the times when the current MC has to do shit in towns and there's no fighting or even story stuff going on for about anywhere from 2~5+ minutes.
>>739529264>>739529307Euro?
>>739529913Aussie.
>>739524936Shining Force was my very first
>>739524936I rented Shining Force 2 when I was very young and I couldn't beat the first fight.
>>739525464RPGs motivated me to read at an early age, and I watched a lot of edutainment shows that taught me how to read, so I learned by the time I was in preschool. I was helping my older sister sort VHS tapes into their proper boxes and I was reading the tapes for her.
>>739529951Oh shit, here I thought Ultima 4 SMS was EU-only.
>>739524936Pokemon of course. Even got a nifty guide to go along with it cause it sounded like a pretty big game.
>>739524936Really got spoiled with this.
>>739530392EU and South America (tec-toy published it there, probably in Brazil).Anything that got an EU release was on shelves in Australia/NZ too coz we all used the PAL standard. Also we got magazines from all over the world and I would read as many as I could get my hands on.
>>739524936Phantasy Star, the first RPG for a whole generation of BRs as it was translated to Portuguese.
>>739530627That's a hell of a good game to start with.
>>739530663>>739530392
>>739530627First RPG I ever emulated. I was so shocked when I got it to work by dragging the rom file onto the ZSNES icon.
>>739524936First console rpg played was Dragon Warrior but I probably played something considered an rpg in c64 first
>>7395249363d perspective
>>739530525Oh God, I think I've seen this at walmart or barnes and nobles before.
>>739530952I think it's considering the viewpoint as like looking into a diorama. I remember some german magazine said something similar about link to the past's dungeons having a "3D" look to them.
>>739524936earthboundi never understood how it was considered some kind of uncommon niche title, everyone that went to blockbuster rented it to find out why it was in a bigger box than anything else
>>739524936Pokemon Blue. I was 4 or 5 when I first played it, could barely read and English wasn't my first language but I still played it a ton and my older brother and cousins guided me through it.
>>739524936>>739530952>>739531036It is more visually striking than FF1's first castle at least.
>>739531091Maybe because more people rented than bought it. Hell even I rented it, but I could never find it in stores during its release.
>Rented one of the DW/DQ games for the NES from a video store as a kid>Had no idea what I was doing and of course there was no manual available>Got lost in some swamp and died>Didn't play the game again for the rest of the weekendThe next one I played was SMRPG, which got me into them.
>>739531235i guess it was hardly a welcoming introduction to the genre, since yeah most rentals didn't turn in to sales for reasons like that or just not liking/understanding it
>>739531091It didn't review particularly well in american magazines. And the marketing was atrocious.>Earthbound is not a bad game if you like "cuteness". In fact, with a little violence and some more menacing weapons and creatures, this would have been an excellent RPG. Sadly, all Earthbound has to offer is a Barney-esque romp in a McDonald's playground. 6/10-Video Games and Computer Entertainment>Earthbound can be amusing if you know where to look for the funny parts. Otherwise, the humor is too mature for little kids and the gameplay is too immature for older gamers. This one is bound to fall to Earth sometime soon. 3.5/5-Gamepro>...-EGM (refused to review it).Gamefan said it was aimed at childrenetc. The british mags were much more positive, Super Play and CVG gave it good reviews.
I'm in my 40s, yes.
