Elden Ring is the only game within its genre that seems to have a high fantasy open world. And by that I mean that the world actually has high fantasy structures and vibes, beyond just fantasy monsters. In most SP open world rpgs, the only fantasy elements are the monsters. The worlds are always generic and typically if it wasn't for the monsters, the world would feel like somewhere from earth. Examples of high fantasy areas: >Forge of the Giants area>The erdtree itself>Leyendell area with it's giant weapons and corpses everywhere>Multiple places with high fantasy vibes like the underground cities and liurniaAnd frankly I really appreciate this aspect of the game. It's weird that people don't notice it at all. It makes the world feel unique.
I can't think of other rpgs which have stuff like this
>>739552301Everyone noticed brother. You use a floating elevator to go a mile underground like 10 minutes into the game.
>>739552301What exactly separates high fantasy and low fantasy? I always liked high fantasy more because my understanding is that basically it's just got more magic in the world. I never liked the minimalist less is more approach to things
>>739552405When magic becomes as perfunctory as a screwdriver you are in high fantasy. When knowledge of how to turn said magical screwdriver becomes lost you have low fantasy.
>>739552457I see. Good explanation
>>739552405high fantasy = the "real world" doesn't existlow fantasy = hidden enclave within the real worldnobody uses it right anymore so basically it means whatever OP wants it to mean here
>>739552457ER takes this concept and applies it to science. In Marika's empire they don't understand recessive genes or what stars and planets are. It is pretty fun playing this game as a modern man and seeing how regressive everyone is.
>>739552405The world itself should have blatantly magical elements in terms of architecture, flora and fauna. Whereas low fantasy worlds look the same as ours visually. Most rpgs have low fantasy worlds, despite having some high fantasy elements.
>>739552642space doesnt exist in elden ring. and no, elden ring is not a planet.
>>739552780elden ring world is flat. wake up sheeple
I think they should challenge themselves to put the player in the middle of an important historical era, where the population is near peak, rather than some weak dick intermission period of each and every region across the board.
>>739552780Space is all around them they call it the void. >Astel, bastard of the void
>>739552862Sekiro did that. It looks like typical from fare but that was actually the moment the ashina clan were at the height of their power irl. The fall comes fast.
>>739552301No wonder it bored me
>>739552560>nobody uses it right anymoreNobody ever did. Lord of the Rings is pretty universally accepted as the definition of high fantasy yet it doesn’t check any of the high fantasy definition boxes- very little overt magic- world looks and acts exactly like ours in medieval era- because it is LITERALLY SET ON EARTH
>>739553298LotR is the definition of low fantasy. Elvish bread is seen as magic because they don't understand calorie intake. The biggest expressions of magic are light. The light or Aerendil, the Light of Aman, the light of Aman coming from Gandalf's staff, a giant spider, a giant dragon, and some words of command. It is as low fantasy as you can get. Even things like dragons, werewolves, orcs, or slaying blades are describes as a scientific process to produce them. The stories literally never explain what ringlore is, the closest you get is the weird behavior Feanor has for his gemcraft stating he can't make more for reasons. The books explain almost none of its magic.
>>739552301Fromsoft does have some of the best environmental artists in the world right now. That is undeniable.
>>739553696Hmmmmm.https://lakshyadigital.com/projects/elden-ring-dlc/
Is Nightreign worth buying?Thinking about getting it since I loved Elden Ring, never summoned other players or invaded others except for the Varre quest though.
>>739553842Sure
>>739552301Does it even matter when the lore sucks and nothing in the world seems to make sense?
>>739553875just like real life
>>739553875You didn't understand the lore?
>>739553947He's probably from the discord sent here to embarrass themselves.
>>739553792Yeah, they made a nice statue according to specifications? What is the issue? This doesn't change anything regarding the environmental design already being pre-planned by Fromsoft's artists. There's a reason you don't see maps like Enir Ilim in other games.
>>739552301>>739552405Harry Potter and Hellboy are good examples of Low Fantasy.Narnia and Wizard of Oz are good examples of Portal Fantasy (Isekai as it's known now thanks to anime).Lord of the Rings is High Fantasy. ( themes of hope despite adversity, protagonists represent a moral good)Elden Ring is Dark Fantasy. (Themes of despair, characters are all morally gray)
>>739552780If space doesn't exist, how the hell did Radahn manage to hold the stars in place for centuries? Or that there are even meteors, stars, a sun and a moon at all? Is it all just one big filament and illusion created by The Greater Will?
>>739555345They literally just call it the void. They give a thing from the void the name 'of the void.'
>>739555237>Hellboy>Low fantasyThe same setting that has actual wizards, witches, and all manner of mythological creatures that are so common the governments of the world all have their own bureau to deal with them? That Hellboy? The one where humanity only just barely survived a Ragnarok level apocalypse with eldritch horrors, frogmen, and worse? If the only thing keeping Hellboy a "low fantasy" setting is that it takes place in a contemporary time period then the difference between high and low is arbitrary at best.
>>739555593Hellboy is high fantasy since the mechanisms of the magic are fully understood. LotR is low fantasy because the sources of magic aren't known to anyone outside the elves and maiar.
