Every single NPC is a real human or animal caught up in the Wind Fish's dream, who just forgot their real identities, all forced to stay asleep because of the Nightmare keeping the Wind Fish asleep. For example, Marin longs to fly over the ocean because she's actually a seagull and those are her real memories creeping back in from deep in her subconscious, suppressed by the dream. Link keeps his memories because he's protected by his connection to the Triforce, which is why he's the only one fit to save the Wind Fish from the Nightmare. So yes, the island gets erased, but Link saves everyone who was trapped in the dream by ending the dream. Everyone wakes up, and they might miss Koholint the way you might miss a nice dream when you wake up, but it's a happy ending because it's good for everyone to get back to their true lives and not just sleep themselves to death.

>>739566374>>739566695The point of the journey is that Link lands on literal paradise with a hot girlfriend who loves him and villagers that gladly take him in despite being a stranger, and yet he'll intentionally end the dream to return to Hyrule. The monsters on Koholint are barely a threat (Villagers will just head into the wild with little care despite their presence, Marin will just travel to the Animal village or the beach, etc.) and there is no one in need of saving. There isn't a single reason for you to actually go into any of the dungeons and do questing other than the owl that outright tells you to do so.I see it as a story of Link choosing his duty towards Hyrule and attaining personal strength over letting himself be lulled into a pleasant illusion. He chooses confronting reality over what is easy. I find that more interesting as meaning because the game doesn't really reward you for it than how it would in a generic "hero saves the world" type story.
