funfact: you can hack a ps2 using those demo discs they gave out in magazines.

what you did was copy the disc on your pc using imgburn, edit the iso to replace the demo.elf with your own homebrew, burn it to a blank dvd-r, boot up the real demo disc, select the demo you replaced and on the screen when it tells you the controls you swap in your burn disc and press X. Instead of crashing the console or sending you back to the ps2 menu it loads your .elf

this was the swap trick for people who didnt want to buy a swap magic in the early 00s
>>
>>739563661
I honestly find Demo Discs to be superior to demos nowadays, especially the ones with multiple games. You could play the demos you want, but you could also find something on these which you might not have even considered picking up, but end up really liking.
>>
>>739564265
oh right I forgot I had a FAT version of the console and I couldn't figure out how to open DVD rom with that hook thingy
>>
>>739564409
yeah you had to make your own swap tool using a old card or buy one of those custom ps2 shells. if you had a slim ps2 you could trick it by holding the button inside.
>>

One time the worker at eb games gave my dad a stack of demo discs they used in the kiosks at the store. There was a few demos per disc, all I can remember is midtown madness, splinter cell and fusion frenzy
>>
>>739564380
exactly, I agree
>>
>>739563927
is there a wrtteup of this anywhere? i have a ps2 slim with a modchip i put in forever ago, and i did freemcboot for a bunch of friends when that came out later.

back when xbox softmodding was new i didn't want to cut up one of my controller cables to make the usb end so i called up microsoft and said i lost my phantasy star usb keyboard adapter and if i could buy one, the guy happily sent it for no cost. so then i used mech assault to soft mod it. good times

a lot of this stuff was on old forums that are now gone and lost to time. some of it still exists out there.https://www.psx-place.com/threads/ps2-swap-method-game-list-2019.23571/
the trick worked on other games not just demos but demos were easy to get your hands on and were more buggy/exploitable than real games.

shit i remember this now. and there was another method sold that had shit you'd use to block certain sensors and swap discs
>>
>>739565518
i don't miss that time to be honest, shit was annoying, I just wanted to play games, FreeMCBoot was a godsend
>>
>>739565115
Genuinely incredible lineups on both.
>>
>>739565637
for a long time my friend had his ps2 setup at my place and it was already chipped so i never needed my own. my fat ps2 kinda sat collecting dust. later when i was gonna mod it it started having disc read issues, as many of the fat ones did. but slims were on sale for $90. i got one and $15 modchip. i dunno if freemcboot was out yet, if it was it was in its infancy. but later since i had a modded ps2 it was so easy to give my friends freemcboot

swap magic + eject tool
instead of buying these for god knows how much money you made your bootleg dvd-r + own tool with a old pokemon card

you can also do the trick once to install freemcboot
>>

I only got pc ones from cereal boxes

a demo disk that came with mario kart double dash includes bonus items that you can put on FE7 on GBA. also includes the only depiction of saint elimine in the series until the gacha that was released over a decade later for some reason
>>
>>739565986
yeah thats it. i remember looking this up when i was trying to decide on a chip or not and thought 'i'm not THAT bad at soldering' so i spent $15 on a chip. the chip was so fucking cheap that was also including shipping. my soldering turned out to be fine and i had a chipped ps2. then freemcboot became a thing

>>
>>739568432

>>
>>739563661
I don't remember console demo discs, but I remember the magazine cover shareware CDs.
>>
>>739563661
I feel like groups could generate some buzz by releasing a digital demo disc nowadays (like those horror devs did a while back), but I realize there would be plenty of issues to resolve and the only benefits are novelty and a nice launcher
>>
>>739568432
aren't most of these dumped? still, i'd like it. wouldn't mind feeling like i'm in the late summer of '98
>>

Pizza Hut really hooked us up.
>>
>buying a game you don't give a shit about specifically for a demo disc

Did that for brave fencer musashi on PSX and DQ8 on PS2 only because they had demos of FF8 and 12 respectively.
Amusingly musashi became one of my favorite PSX games, didn't give a shit about DQ8 until way later though

Recently imported a copy of Chocobo Mystery Dungeon for PS1 and learned that Square packaged an extra disc with trailers and demos with their PS1 games in Japan. Its pretty rad, shame they never brought that to PAL, I actually want to play Soukaigi now after watching the trailer.

reminds me of the time I got an E3 flasher to downgrade my PS3, that fucking solderless clip not working since it was a counterfeit and then I shipped it to a friend who soldered it and it worked.... and then two weeks later a softmod exploit was released where you could downgrade without any flashers...

i fixed a ps3 via the heatgun method before
