Social Media we've been over this. when Social Media companies turned into ad companies the sleek and futuristic internet full of homepages was over.

Same shit happened to Youtube.

Anyone remember how Aerisdies used to look? Or how about old IGN? or Gamespy? Literal perfection. The internet was SO much better when it was laid out like a newspaper instead of attempting to hide everything you would like to see because that forced you to engage with the ads.

All forums/places like 4chan eventually get run over by groups who's sole purpose is to make everyone else on there miserable. Which is why we have dedicated bots for threads, people posting 24/7 about irrelevant /pol/ shit, etc.

we must return to gamefaqs my brothers
>>
>>739599748
>>739600105
The thing you have to remember: Homepages haven't gone away, they have just been drowned out by the billions of social media platforms running an SEO DDOS attack on the internet. They're still out there if you look.

You can look at something like bearblog.dev and look through the blogs there and you'll see most of them are identical to what Geocities pages used to be in the old days: Random thoughts from people who just had to put what they were thinking into words along with esoteric knowledge on very obscure topics. Same thing with Neocities.

>All forums/places like 4chan eventually get run over by groups who's sole purpose is to make everyone else on there miserable.
And the best part is: eventually, these groups will become the moderators of these forums/places as well since no one else cares enough to make everyone's lives miserable except for them.

Nah you could pretty effectively tie gamergate and Trump by extension to the death of forums.
Gamergate killed forums by making moderators seem even more cancerous, and various exoduses led to people forming their own communities elsewhere, typically on reddit.
Even 4chan experienced the same thing and lost as many users as it gained. A lot of boards still haven't recovered and never will (biggest one for that is /cgl/, which basically lost its entire community during 2014-15, but even a board like /a/ just completely changed from the first half of the 2010s to the second half, and is now basically dead).

Makes sense that the only forums that still exist are ones filled with people who never subscribed to gamergate (ResetEra) or were old enough to tank much of it (RPGCodex, SA (yes, it's still active)).

Sometimes, I feel sorrow about realizing that the internet, no, the world I loved, no longer exist and likely will be, only remaining in pictures, videos and memories. It's hard to be positive about the future with this in mind.
is it normal?
>>
>>739615496
You're 20
>>
>>739615546
Someone who is 20 now would not feel such sorrow, as they would have started internet around 2016-2017. which was different but not as drastically as the early-mid-late 2000s or even early 2010s internet
>>
>>739615640
Nah they would, because they spend all day on the internet and fantasizing about how they were born in the wrong generation.
>>
>>739615496
It's an understandable sorrow, but you shouldn't give up because of it. Even if things are getting worse, somewhere out there, there's still places that might not be the same, but still have their own life or are really meaningful to someone, and might be meaningful to you if you ever come across them. Even on /v/ there can be nice threads from time to time.
>>
>>739615674
What brings the most sorrow, having lived something you know will never happen again, or having lived after and realizing you will never experience it?
To me, the first brings more sorrow. as you KNOW firsthand that it existed, you used it. it's not just something external.
>>
>>739615496
This is literally just growing up. Some adult in the world had the exact same thoughts when you were enjoying the mid 2000s as a teenager, just like some teenager is having the time of their lives right now.
>>
>>739615496
this is when you funnel that want into creating something you truly enjoy instead of succumbing to le sad and just giving up and being miserable
>>
>>739615751
I'm gonna be blunt, if you feel sorrow over losing forums, you weren't there. You weren't alive, you were the type of faggot who was jerking off the admins and had a 15 Star account with a dozen badges or whatever your site of choice had.

Forums were, largely shit. They were often run by complete incompetents who couldn't handle having a community of even ten people, let alone fifty, let alone a hundred. Every other week there'd be a significant issue where someone raped the admin's shitty servers (typically running off their mom's desktop) by simply making a dozen accounts, or there'd be a spammer that wouldn't get dealt with for hours, and the discussion you were waiting for wasn't worth it. The discussion was honestly worse than it is here because here you're allowed to call an autistic derailing sperg a faggot, but if you did that on a forum they'd start calling the moderators down on you for the nono words.

This whole fetish around forums is fucking dumb. Go give Lowtax's corpse tenbux if you want the forum experience, and even that is probably still better than what a lot of the forum experience actually was.
>>
>>739615948
I'm not just talking about that, I'm talking about internet and the world, if you say things are not worse now than it used to be and are not marginally worsening every years, I cannot understand you, are you the type of person who hate the past?
>>
>>739616015
I don't have rose tinted glasses for shitty internet talks.
People talking on the internet has always been bad. For every singular good thread, there's months upon months of complete dogshit and that has always been true. To believe otherwise is to invent a past that didn't exist, and it's not "Nobody was ever happy", it's "The internet makes people miserable". That has always been true, people knew that decades ago because the internet disconnects you from the need to be nice and incentivizes being a miserable fuck, and it always has. That's why flamewars and trolling always existed too.

SA got rekt by the actual US State Department around the same time /b/ had the cp meltdown and moot gave the FBI a permanent admin account, 2006 or 7. Before NGO homos infiltrated internet spaces it was the government. An SS D&D mod got baited into Benghazi ffs. Gamergate was more widespread and in the open, but the same tactics were being run in a more covert, if not less effective way for a long time before then.

What I miss the most is the chill attitude people had when engaging with each other. The stupid but earnest humor. People just doing awesome shit for the fun of it.
Now it's all quiet hysteria and paranoia and everyone trying to win at life or form a cult or fight with shadows. Internet has become a horrible parody of real life, a sort of self-inflicted lucid dream where nothing really matters but people are determined to believe that it does.

You need a sense of disconnect from the rest of the world to engage in real play. The more the internet became integrated in real life (As well as increasing normalfagification) the more it became serious business to people. Smartphones meant you were never more than seconds away from it, and the way the internet has become increasing centralized hasn't helped

The one and only reason to cosplay is for attention. Why attention whore on a website filled with older autistic nobodies, when you can attention whore on Twitter, Reddit, OnlyFans and get even more attention and potentially make money?

Also, the novelty of cosplay culture fizzled out. Otaku culture (and it's counterpart, weeaboo culture) are dead. Animanga are for normalfags now. They are just another tool for the well-adjusted to socialize and acquire sex.

I miss being able to just google "x forum" and being able to instantly find a community full of people invested in that hobby, no matter how niche it was. Music sharing, torrenting, instruments, all vidya genres, emulation, tech, anime, etc. Being able to access to all their previous discussion with search filters that actually worked instantly surpassed having to deal with the one or two rogue power-hungry moderators per year.
Nowadays every community has reduced into a half-dead reddit sub no one really uses, or a hidden discord where no one really cares to engages with their main topic. Most of my Discord experience consist of joining with a question, and their only chat being so fast and full of off-topic posting that if your post doesn't get read in the half a second it's still on screen, you just get ignored, and if you keep pushing it you'll probably end up with one of the regulars muting you.
And holy fuck, don't even get me started on Discord search function, I want to fucking murder the retard who designed that shit.
