Only post ITT if you believe games are more than the sum of their parts, especially their gameplay parts, with an example of a game that makes you believe that

>Oblivion kind of sucks as an RPG and has glaring design flaws
>movement and action feel like ass and aren't very fun
>still consider it one of the best games of all time due to the OST and magical atmosphere alone
If you judged it pragmatically it wouldn't rank very high, but due to factors other than gameplay I still think it's one of the most special experiences you can have in a game, very few games can touch you in the same way and it's not something you can easily replicate or copy

> games are more than the sum of their parts
That is the core basis of what sensible people label as soul. Note this is not an endorsement of quality either.
>>
>>739614016
Other examples would be KCD, Like a dragon

and bully
There's nothing all that interesting about bully
but the writing, characters and low stakes missions make for a really really fun game

>If you judged it pragmatically it wouldn't rank very high
Bullshit. Sounds like you're just overly concerned about the opinions you've been fed by haters on the internet.

People are too insecure to fucking like things nowadays.
>>

No I'm talking about the current framework of judging games by how many dopamine-inducing moments they have per minute or how much "game juice" they have which is how games like Ball x Pit, Megabonk, Balatro, Vampire Survivors, friendslop, Pseudoregalia, Hollow Knight, Hades, Nintendo games etc all get rated very highly simply because they're "fun" even if they have little to no real substance to speak of

Oblivion wouldn't get rated high using that framework since it's a slow and clunky game, but I fundamentally disagree with that framework in the first place
>>
>>739614756
This. It's all about policing other people into shape. Edgy, cringy, coomer, incel, yadda yadda yadda, all ways to quell self expression. If Rivers Cuomo released Pinkerton today, he'd be called all of the things I mentioned earlier. Self expression died when social media took off and everyone is too afraid to break the mold and think for themselves. In fact, I'm sure that someone is going to reply to me with a snarky comment because that's really the only form of self expression that people feel comfortable exercising these days. Anything to make them feel superior and/or morally pure to others.

First it was
>judged pragmatically
and now shifted on to
>no i mean this "current framework" that i disagree with

Ok but why are you even concerned by that.

>>739615186
I get that there's a thing you want to bitch about but willfully misreading someone so that you can reach for the opportunity is just being a gigantic fucking faggot.
>>
>>739615628
It hasn't shifted, that's the pragmatic judgement framework of "dopamine per minute" that I was talking about in the first place

>Ok but why are you even concerned by that.
Because vidya discourse has shifted greatly in the favor of such objectively measurable judgement frameworks, I feel like games that try to be more have fallen by the wayside, these idealistic values are now received with "why bother" reactions by both the devs and the players

Don't fall for /v/'s "objectivity" and safe opinions, it's a facade.

>still consider it a good game because of """atmosphere"""
its an alright game but this means nothing. thats just your subjective interpretation and bears nothing on the quality of the game. it was an extremely flawed game and still is even with mods. the demake made it worse. it was watered down compared to morrowind with worse writing by far. this was not a game helped by some metastabilizing unity of vision but because it was less shit than skyrim in retrospect.

quant stats become the midwit's prison:

McNamara's fallacy (also known as the quantitative fallacy) is the practice of making decisions based solely on easily quantifiable metrics (like statistics or hard data) while entirely ignoring qualitative, contextual, or human factors.

>atmosphere means nothing
analyzing and appraising media according to some flawed supposedly objective rating, as if it was material science, is peak hylic behavior

A lot of open world games are this for me, when i play games i imagine as if im replaying them again as the dev intended and that includes paying attention to the breadcrumbs designers put to tease and guide players instead of ignoring the open world to bee-line optimal items and gear. I wanna play at my leisure and open world is really good for that. Every playthrough i do of elden ring i follow the intended progression path and enjoy my time through the journey the way the game is meant to be experienced.
Stalker 2, while a pretty shallow experience when it comes to gameplay, especially in the late game, actually has excellent environmental puzzles for it's caches. The best, definitive way to enjoy the game is cache hunting, the designers went all out with clever and fun puzzles for many of them.
>>

>bee-line optimal items and gear
I mean if you play RPGs like this, then you didn't even really play them.
>>

>"""atmosphere"""
>thats just your subjective interpretation and bears nothing on the quality of the game.
1. That would imply atmosphere can't be crafted by the use of music, visuals

2. I'm curious, have you enjoyed the atmosphere of any game? Are you capable of that?
>>
>>739614016
>magical atmosphere alone
Yeah. Nothing much like it ever came out.
>>
>>739617268
>this means nothing. thats just your subjective interpretation and bears nothing on the quality of the game.
This is a great example of when someone tries to engage with concepts beyond their level of literacy. Talk to a kid who can only read at a 5th grade level, ingesting the literal events described on page, about how those events and the way the story progress may have metaphorical messages on a grander topic and they'll accuse you of making things up. "That can't possibly exist, because I can't see it". It's one of those things that you simply can't bring the conversation down to address. Like someone who reads One Hundred Years of Solitude and thinks it's a story about ghosts.

Wikis are fine, its people looking things up instead of exploring that ruin the experience.
>>
>>739621303
I can't imagine using a wiki to look things up while playing a game. That's the most zoomer ass thing I've ever heard. After you're done with it, and shelve it, going back and looking up what you may have missed? Sure, I guess, but WHILE playing it? Absurd.

This should be obvious to anyone with a brain. Pic related is the most fun BR I've played, but I didn't play it for long because it was so visually repulsive and soulless. Unsurprisingly, it died in less than a year.
