What fighting games struggle the most is making new characters that people want to play, because the time investment required means you just play the same character across different titles, add to that people that have been playing for a long time and few female characters and the result is obvious.

Smash is a huge franchise and Nintendo is a huge company, getting them involved with EVO is more profitable than trying to get French Bread or Skullgirls involved. Lastly, EVO already featured Mario Kart once, James Chen got top 8 if I'm not mistaken, Smash isn't that out there by comparison
