This is a bigger knock than it would usually be, since replacing units in 3 Houses is generally harder. Way better than Catherine though, with better promotion prospects into things that are decent even with poor late game stats. I'm assuming his starting skills are on-par with other units though. If he actually starts with his weapon ranks, and mount rank enough to actually be a Paladin, he's a lot better for ending up in interesting classes. Depending on what spells he ends up with and his magic growth, he might actually be one of the best hybrid unit candidates in the game, just because he can get into Dark/Holy Knight basically for free. If he joins a bit later, at around Catherine's join time, he's just Catherine with worse up front combat but slightly better promotion opportunities. If he joins around Seteth and Alois, he's dogshit.

These two things together make them fail at the basic role of tanking, since a Mercenary is much more bulky, because he isn't getting doubled.
