it's better than 99.9% of survival crafting games so I guess by that metric it is

>>739633368it's pretty damn fun overall, but it's not without its flaws.
>>739634136I dunno what you want out of it, if you prefer making a luxurious base with all the bells and whistles that's an option, if you want to just bum rush and see a lot of new content that also works fine, the amount of grinding and farming mats you need to do as a solo player for progression is honestly not that bad if you know what you're looking for. You can also tweak settings to make certain stuff like hunger/thirst/exp gain a non issue.
yeah I dont usually like survival crafting shit and I played it completely solo, its so fungot burnt out by the hydroplant though
>>739633368It is very good.>>739633579I think that was the purpose.
Half of the people I know really fucking hate inventory management crafting games. If you're not one of those guys, honestly give it a try, and at most ONE friend that wants to try it alongside you. It's honestly better to do it alone the first time because there's always some snag involved with the story if you have to rely on others to catch up or slow down.
Go into server settings and set enemy health to 0.5x but keep all other valuesI fucking hate bullet sponge enemies
>>739633368it's good. level design reminded me of how dark souls' 1 firelink shrine looped back on itself. good stuff
>>739634513the hp scaling is weird, if you try getting in a straightforward fight with a lot of enemies they're incredibly tanky, but if you just run around sprint attacking with a crowbar a huge percent of enemies in the game get one-shot

>>739633368it's gooduntil sector 6, from that the game becomes insufferable

>>739633368Yeah, I initially dismissed it as another survival crafting game but the premise of it being Half-Life only as a random scientist and the ability to build stupid shit to help you survive sold me on it.I beat it in 120 hours or so and that includes fucking around with fishing and playing around making bases and experimenting with cooking. I'll play it again someday, but be warned the ending sucks and the final sections are a fucking slog.
>>739633368i say this with complete confidence: it is one of the very few games that does "survival craft" right because its actually interwoven with the game rather than tacked on.

>>739633368it's one of my favorite games released in the last two decades>>739635096If you make a base on the train, does it prevent all the silver from respawning?
>>739634136It's kino. Even the main plot is good & your role in it is funny. I don't want to spoil the end, but you should be able to pick up during the game what your role inadvertently is in the story. The game is extremely charming, it doesn't force you to do tons of grinding, sometimes new tiers of weapons are just reskins of something 2 tiers ago, but they're usually unique with unique effects & you continually unlock new gear and weapons from the start til the very end. There's so much built-in qol that you dont even need mods.Game is really good, but is even better with friends. I was interested in it long before it came out and clued in my friends. We planned to do a 1.0 playthrough with our whole group, but had to delay it by a couple weeks. I ended up completing the entire game solo because I just couldn't put it down, I then immediately replayed it with friends & kept my mouth shut so they could have a blind experience. I enjoyed it as much if not more the 2nd time around & they're all itching for another play-through too. We'll probably wait til they're done adding content though. This isn't some open world survival craft like Valheim or Minecraft where you need hundreds of a resource to build a base or upgrade your shit. There are also world modifiers so even if you aren't happy with the resource drop rates, carry weights, etc you can tweak it all to your heart's content.
>>739634531Forgot to mention this. The level design is also 10/10. You'll constantly be looping back to areas, unlocking shortcuts, etc. It is the closest I have seen a game get to DS1's "ooooooooooooooooo!!" Feeling when you see how the world fits together over the course if a play-through. The level design may genuinely be the most impressive part of the game.
>>739635343FUCK YOU! WHY EVEN POST THAT?
>>739635661playing through from when the game was just the labs made me wonder about how much they truly had planned out from the start vs how much they kind of glued together when they needed a new access point since nearly every door to a new area was there from the point each area was added
>>739634513scrub behavior, enemies already turn into tissue when you graduate to real weapons
>>739635661Yeah, it's always a great feeling when you're about the starve, you're exhausted, and your equipment is damaged only to open a door and find you're in the main lobby. It's a great sense of relief and knowing you have a new shortcut. On an unrelated note, I also was terrified of this faggot for the first hour or so, but he became such a routine I felt bad putting him in his cuckcage for the endgame.
>>739635343Fuck off dude
This game's hunger and thirst mechanics are pretty half assed
>>739633368>The trailer music is fucking cool>The music in game is barely there and not memorable outside of a couple of sectionsThe Royal Road theme is stuck in my head, as is the Reactor theme with that witch laughing and rambling over the intercom, but otherwise the music is meh.

>>739636905pretend you're brazilian
>>739636954I make my teleport point in the hallway just outside the portal for that reason. A base in the train itself sounds like a pain to walk around in anyway.
>>739636131I think it's most fun to never contain Leyak. While it does lose some of its scare over time, she can still catch you off guard at times til the very end. This is even more pronounced in multiplayer, because only one person is targeted/can see her at a time, so instead of getting used to it & thinking "hmm. Its been about the right time aaaaaaand there she is." You may go 1-9 cycles before she targets back on you, which really ends up catching you off guard. There's no rhythm to settle in to. 10/10 stalker based on real mythos.
>>739636905I found it funny that you're better off pooing in the shitty makeshift toilet rather than a real one or the advanced telepotty because then you can gran the shit and make powerful bombs with it. You're throwing shit at the Order and Gatekeepers with extra steps like a chimp.
>>739637402If it ain't a portal toilet, I'm shitting my pants
>>739637361I used to put it in the box, but now I just always carry the xray gun because i'm so sick of dumping greyebs into the container to upkeep it
>>739637402Now that pets have been overhauled I wonder if they can take over the poop economy. I tried having a pen of skinks in 1.0 for it but they just kept clipping through furniture and escaping
>>739636905most of the facility looks really nice though, it's barely even messed up
It's good but there's a real risk of the devs getting eternally derailed with dumb shit instead of focusing on the good parts. The last 20% of the game was blatantly fucking rushed out. The final boss was a abomination of pure dogshit. Really should stick to what they know rather than try to cram square pegs in round holes. More portal worlds that AREN'T fucking collabs, more evergreen locations, maybe going back and fleshing out some of the weaker areas (Residences especially)
>>739633368its the best survival crafter since valheim
>>739636905You can make anywhere in the game comfy with enough furniture. I made the starting canteen into a comfy lab/living room area that Doc Brown would have been at home in. I even boarded up the uncomfier windows looking into storage rooms and the door to the broken lift with coloured cubicle walls and paintings.
>>739637780the final boss sucking ass was just a clever reference to Nihilanth sucking ass
>>739636905>I don't want to subject myself to endless hours of eating monster chunks and shitting while trapped in a large dirty roommate its just like the favela youre posting from
>>739634604The sprint attack is extremely strong and I think with the way armor works single big hits are better than spamming
>>739633368if you loved half-life or ark: survival evolved, the game is a near perfect blend of the two
>>739633368It has some balancing issues around the amount of material available especially in multiplayer but overall very solid.
>>739637967comparing it to ark feels like a disservice, everything lame eye-rolling aspect of the genre that ark more or less solidified, it tends to do in a better way
>>739637501you get more shit faster if you use the makeshit toilet the moment any of the continence warnings appear, over twice as fast as waiting to poop your pants
>>739633368Why is this gun so stupidly good? I was so disappointed when I got to the end and realized nothing else could compare.
>>739638216It makes the final boss a joke if you set up charging stations around the island for it.
>>739637895You can only abuse the sprint attack for so long before it gets tiresome. Throwing blade weapons is much more convenient, and is why the quantum pick was strong enough that even nerfing the damage didn't stop it from being the best.
>>739638114original Ark before all the extra bullshit was comfy as fuck, I trained a pair of T-Rexes and named them Grace and GloryAF reminds me of Ark basebuilding more than anything else desu, even more fun than Valheim
The threads when this first came out for 1.0 were so comfy. I remember some of the neat bases people were making and everyone finding out how bullshit charge attacks were.
>>739633368I just lost the level 20 Tareccary that leads my gang, TO A BRIDGE, so it's a shit fucking game. And the Sow has to be the one with a collar because it'll fucking die to its own 'milk' prompt until that's fixed.
>>739638259>Go into final boss>Friends only carry that and a melee weapon each>Their deatomizers run out of juice>Have to sit there whittling it down with the five different ranged weapons I brought (which they cannot fire due to not meeting stat requirements) while they both complain about the game not "accommodating their builds"miserable experience
>>739638523That sucks, and I agree it's bad design, but I always have ranged and melee weapons just in case. The rebar launcher was not as good as some people said, but the disco laser grenades were great and I always carried several to fuck up large groups or bosses.
>>739634513>>739634604The enemies only seem spongy when you don't aim for the head. Every limb has an HP value, so if you're swinging at someone's torso you're most likely hitting an arm first and doing only arm damage, which has to reach 0 to overflow into torso damage. Meanwhile head health is usually lower and takes 2x damage for most enemies.
>>739633368its UE5 yet somehow it works just finestrange that the dev is also white
>>739638623we made one of the laser grenades and it bugged out and vanished forever the very first time we tested it. It must have fallen through the floor.

>>739639167>>739639189I see
>>739639453I meant scp shotgun. Dunno why it corrected to screen
>>739639103I always have at least four guns at any time, deatomizer is always one of them because it's fun to use. If they nerf laser chargers even harder I'll just mod it back because anti-fun balancing for single player games is petty and retarded
>>739639519I loved that one>Uh, this is anomalous because it had weird properties once>It seems normal now but it's here just in case>We never get told why it's hereMy theory is the person using it was anomalous and it was always an ordinary gun.
>>739633368Only negatives I can think of is it needs more enemy variation, maybe introduce something harder earlier. And some of my friends struggled with the labyrinth aspect, having to memorize the layout of the facility. And most cooking recipes being pointless. And that there's no level up picks, you just advance on a predetermined power scale.Great game.
>>739639603 if you upgrade it you'll find out why it was taken in
>>739639453Every shotgun except the Scrapshot line is good. Energy pistol with the Acid or disruptor coating is fantastic (damage is added to each of its 5 ticks). Hypercross Magbow is one of the GOATs. Manomin Magnum is insane DPS and so are the Patois/Plasmois. It's just the 9mm guns sucking the most dick.
>>739639603>he doesn't knowUpgrade it my friend.
>>739638523Oh yeah that was a negative, I started the final boss with only melee weapons on me. The NPCs should say something like I need a ranged weapon.
>>739634665Soup makes food and water a non issue. And most distillations are kinda ass except Acid, Thermal, Reforge, Somnivorous, which are kinda busted. And Restorative Tincture is straight up better Healing Syringe for the same material cost. Its not a listed effect but Curative Tincture heals all rads for cheap. And Brainpower Tincture gives a EXP boost for 10 minutes, giving a safe use for human brains.
>>739638523>>739639823They did mitigate it somewhat by having it launch the claw down onto the battlefield sometimes, which allegedly shares its damage with the boss. That wasn't even there in 1.0 though, they had to add it later when they realized what a massive fuckup the fight was.

>>739640560I don't know what's up with this thing, but it just didn't work for me on day 1 and I haven't tried it again since. I'm not sure if it was my copy of the game or if it's an issue they patched, but the majority of hits would just simply not connect with the enemy. I'd battle charge a guy like 6 times and 1 hit would deal damage despite getting a little puff of dust on them with every hit.
>>739640589Biometric shit just needs to go. It's a GIGA noob-trap not only because the first tier of guns isn't worth grinding for, but because it has so little armor and enemies target your arms so heavily that it just leads the new player into dying instantly to things. There's no purpose, the restricted guns aren't that impactful.
>>739640716Hardlight is laser*plasma damage and doesn't do what it says. It inherits resistances and immunities over strengths, so it deals 0.65x damage to hardlight shields and won't work on anything immune to plasma OR laser.Basically it's a picky bitch and will either vaporize something or not even scratch them.

Most of them have really short effects and are super gimmicky, the only ones worth brewing are the brainpower one for more experience and the healing one because it's a really strong healing source. You can feed giganto tinctures to your peccary to turn it into a tareccary.Coatings on the other hand are a little bit better, the fog-based one lets you make your guns ignore resistances and there's a decent number of enemies that take half damage from bullets. Acid coating is probably the best damage boost. You can get your ranged weapons to never lose durability with enough crafting levels so the coatings stay on indefinitely. You need to engage with distillations if you want to cook more stuff because it's the only way to get vials of milk and that's used for a lot of cooking recipes.

>get to the labs>like it so much I decide to move my whole base from office to there, it seems like a huge sector anyways and the new hub for the second half of the game>every sector after that connects back to office anyways so now I have to go through the office sector when getting anywhere I mean I love the labs, its my favorite sector, and I love my base, but it seems like putting your base anywhere BUT the office sector is pointless
>>739648690Once you get access to teleporters it's a moot point. You can just connect every base and they are all equally convenient. My favorite base is way down in power services.
Is there a way to open the metal crates? It seems like there is but I never figured it out.>>739649178I like that base BUT the upstairs has all those unmovable crates and very few power outlets. It has a nice vibe and view though.

>>739650032Looks ugly though. Lasers might make a cleaner look but they're so expensive to craft. And again, the layout sucks with all the immovable boxes.

>>739650127Maybe, but when I played through I foolishly played through with friendsWe had one base in the pre-order portal world and the only other base we ever made was an FOB at reactors
>>739643801I doubt this will happen, but I hope they have an update where they improve the flow of everything after labs. Security sucks outside of black ball farming and reactor is brutal, which would be fine if the area after it wasn't an absolute snoozefest where the biggest danger was falling into an endless void.

>>739633368First 50% of the game is excellent, second 50% steadily gets worse and worse. Not very relaxing or comfy for a survival game and no real reason to build extensive bases or go back to replay once you've completed it. Solid 7/10, 6 if you catch me on an ungenerous day.
>>739650959Yes. It's the race-car build. If you use a shield, you only have room for a beanie or cowboy hat on your head though. It doesn't matter because enemies don't aim at your head or legs.

>>739652180Nobody should play AF coop as their first experience with the game. It doesn't even feel designed for that, so many tense and difficult sections would have the life sucked out of them if you were in a call with somebody else while playing it together. The best way is for everybody to play the game once by themselves and then do a coop playthrough, where now everybody knows where they want to go and what they want to do. Your first time playing is always going to be kind of a trial, and you'll be thinking constantly about "what could I do better if I started over".

>>739656934Abiotic Factor doesn't need to happen at the same time as the events of Dr. Hud's abduction, there are temporally differing perforations as well.
>>739657543I think this mainly happens when you're looking for the next batshit insane challenge after Reactors, when Residences is more like a lore-focused place. Like maybe it isn't a great idea to have one sector be the pure combat challenge and then tamer sectors after, but that's what it is.
>>739657978Dang I'll skip then thanks Anon. Still looking for an experience like Conan Exiles or modded Project Zomboid with NPCs and such.

I just got to the area with the floating drone guy and was wondering does the game end end where the world is essentially over or is there like endgame stuff where you just fuck around after the main story? Also I equipped both rat items and didn't get the achievement, is there something I'm missing?
>>739661830there's optional stuff you can do after beating the game, although I guess most/all of it can technically be done without finishing the main objectives. I don't know about the achievement though.
>>739661982You won't believe me but I literally just got it. Idk why it wasn't working, apparently didn't have the hydroplant achievement either. But that's cool, was just wondering cause I couldn't find any updated info.

>>739663403I do new playthroughs with new bases pretty often, and one of my favorites actually turned out to be the forgotten old Mapping Center in Manufacturing. I loved the verticality it supported. Its map position isn't as unplayable as it looks, since there's a nearby portal to Office 3F (set up a bounce pad and a cloth rope in the portal's room), down the hall from that one is the portal to Labs, and pretty much the next area you go to is giving you access to personal TPs to connect to crafting benches elsewhere. Later on Mapping Center can connect to Residences.

I just started solo and I got fucking wrecked. I had no food because I kept stomping pests and ended up with no food. Also spoilers I guess but do I eventually get more alive NPCs besides Warren?

>>739669330Yeah bio scrap is pretty much what you get for "failed" harvests on enemies, and doing net+stomp always gives that, so you should stop fighting pests that way once you get table legs and sharp weapons. Don't forget you can buy food from vending machines if you're in trouble, and can pick up and move the water coolers all around office sector back to your base.Bots are the designated tough enemy of the early game, be careful not to build near one. You can actually distract one forever where it spawns by placing a certain base defense item that can never break apart...

I think it would be cool if there were "biome" bonuses that you could get depending on where you build your base. Would give a reason to make bases in more remote parts of the facility.

>>739679879What I did was play with a friend, and when we were done for the night I'd play a solo world up to the point where we got together so I could indulge in all the dialogue, emails, explore with a fine-toothed comb more, etc. Felt like that was the best way to enjoy something with my buddy but not have each other wait on one another reading emails etc for minutes at a time.
>>739681062I like this idea. Some immovable piece of furniture, different for each designated base spot, that gives you a buff like what you get at the end of some portal worlds if you stay in the base area for x minutes or something. I found quite a few cool, out-of-the-way spots that were clearly just blank slates for bases with plugs all over.. but never really *actually* considered using them because the locker room in offices floor 2 was just too convenient... free storage for early game until you get the item distributor that doesn't work with the lockers for some reason, pool for water, fridge, water coolers around, lots of little rooms with plugs (gym, upstairs gym, kitchen, pool) for base expansions as you progress, central to basically everything.

AF is a genuinely good game, especially if you liked half-life for it's style. I normally don't really care for survival/crafting games all that much because as an anon put it in another thread, a lot of them are farm useless item to make a stronger item that allows you to farm the next level of useless item. Somehow AF seems to MOSTLY sidestep this by feeding you a decent amount of what you'd need to make the majority of what is in the game if you simply explore and it often feels like progress in crafting isn't so much as gated by resource counts as it is by how far you've progressed in the game world to unlock new recipes. And often if you don't have the resources to make something right away it's typically something you can obtain in fairly short order without farming 100X of whatever item it is. What really sucked me into the game is just how well made the levels are in regards to layouts and how it most of it loops back on itself to the main hub in so many different ways, you got locked doors/elevators in logical places, trams, portals and those waterway pipes that spit you out. The game's fairly large but it never feels so large that you can't mentally map the majority of it without too much trouble. All this coming from someone who plays on the default settings, you can alter so much of the experience by customizing your world, how fast XP is earned and such to really tailor the game to your own needs. So far all the updates besides two fairly small bonus worlds have been free and with the sheer amount of free content this game has gotten and still is planned I can't see why I wouldn't eventually end up paying for some sorta full on expansion if one ever came about.
>>739665717You an eat brains to get an exp boost buff. It will make you vomit so the downside is burning through food faster. Don't forget to use traps, even when exploring in to new areas. Bot CPUs are frequently needed for upgrades so set up killboxes for passive income.
>>739669330Don't be afraid to change the game settings if you aren't having fun, though I would say you should get a bit further in so you get a taste of the balance first. Early game is the most difficult because your still battling to eke out a living.
>>739633579the fish from that area just give antefish filets, it feels a bit rushed and undercooked honestly despite mostly using assets from another game
Definitely in my top 10 games ever.My biggest gripe is that the mobility power creep really throws off the pacing of the game later on, and I think it's a large factor why people find later areas less enjoyable. What's the point of the vehicles, and especially the SUVs when you've had personal teleporters since before you even reach them? Trams are nifty for world building but also completely pointless once you get access to teleporters. The mobility backpacks and the cube are in need of some sort of rework to make them feel less mandatory, step one is probably to reduce their effectiveness when you are overweight.People would complain, but I think the game would benefit from it.
>>739692026I was honestly surprised that the personal teleporters let you bring your entire inventory and have no usage limit other than charging, it's extremely powerful and seems to step on the interconnectedness that they worked for.
