I know how to dodge, I just can't figure out when to dodge most of her attacks. There's not a single guide online that explains it clearly enough. It just shows them parrying or rolling past an attack but never any explanation of the specific timing.

There's two variants. One she dashes forward, slashes three times and then another quick slash. Dodge diagonally into it and then another dodge almost right away. This can (and usually will) chain into another attack, potentially the same triple-slash (I've had her do it seven times in a row) so just wait to dodge the next attack.
The variant of this is when she dashes forward she will be lower to the ground. This is how you know the follow-up slash will be delayed. This is always a 'finisher' move with no follow-up, so if you dodge correctly you will be able to hit her every time.

why do people pretend that this boss is a finely-tuned rhythm puzzle like most other bosses in the series are? her encounter design is so overtly skewed in her favor that its not worth engaging with as a player. the inane attack pacing/readability + heal on hit + waterfowl dance + the fact that shes optional illustrates the perfect storm of a boss that wasnt finished and dropped in for the meme. her inclusion is a manifestation of the same "PREPARE TO DIE LUL" attitude that nearly killed the series with dark souls 2.

you are literally not supposed to engage with her on normal terms because she is designed to spite you for doing such. you MUST cheat with summons or cheese if you want to beat this, or else you waste literally a dozen hours training to fight her, which not a single other boss in the series asks of the player

Because it is.
I killed her at RL1 with an honest iron greatsword, no status effects and no consumables.
She is very predictable.
If not using online summons, you can even bait out Waterfowl at a distance for an easier dodge and then get a very predictable 45 seconds where she will not use Waterfowl (this cooldown is cleared with the rare grab lunge).
Nobody ever mentions this because nobody tries anymore.

I fucking hate this fight. I don't have a problem with dodging but with attacking. There doesn't seem to be enough time before or after an attack or during a combo to get a hit in. Instead she just doesn't attack sometimes and just walks around like a retard. This makes attacking her always feel like a gamble.

Am I supposed to just play it safe and only get one hit in every now and then? She's way too tanks for that even without the life steal. I even tried to giant red hammer to knock her up with every heavy attack so I have time to disengage after attacking but it seems like she gets infinite hyperarmor after every attack so it never safe. Even though my attacks should completely wreck her if she decides to attack one frame before I hit her she'll just be unphased by the attack.

The first phase isn't even that bad but the second phase kills me almost immediately every time. I don't even understand what's going on. Does she just get a massive aoe on every attack. I can't get a feel for the second phase because I just die too quickly.

I hate this boss so much. It goes against everything I leaned in that game. Everything about this boss feels off. It's like I have to fight against my muscles memory because I'm only used to fight well designed bosses and suddenly this absolute fucking whore comes out of nowhere and changes the whole game.

You're right anon, this part in particular is dogshit design and you see it a lot on recent soulslike bosses. I'm not sure if they're doing this on purpose because they think a boss walking around for a bit is cool? (it can be when it's done properly but not like this) or if they think it's a way of giving the player a break? (It's not, you don't know if or when she's going to do something so you're forced to sit and wait) but the result is arse

It's possible to manipulate this state with throwing knives and you can play around the AI, but doing that isn't satisfying or intuitive and the AI routines aren't communicated to the player in any way so you can only discover this stuff through blind trial and error. These bosses have a huge amount of animation work, the animations should be used to communicate with the player and make it clear what they can do, when they can attack, how they can avoid attacks, instead of everything being misleading and requiring repeated guesswork

Yes, I’ll be honest. I can feel my heartrate rise when a boss is low on health. I’m not ashamed because I assume most other people probably have the same experience. It’s a normal human reaction. But that’s why I think bosses shouldn’t have health bars. I think generally games should communicate how healthy an NPC is visually by having them bleed, limp, etc. Horizon Zero Dawn does this well.

A good way of handling a boss which is thematically supposed to counter things would be to have them enter a special counter pose at the end of certain attacks which is fully communicated by the animation, happens consistently and has clear and intended counterplay besides just staring at her waiting. For example she could go into a guard pose for 2 seconds at the end of the downslash and would do an actual guard counter if you hit her, but moves explicitly designed to break guard like Kick and the Square Off uppercut could break the guard giving you an opening, and she could have a recovery flourish as she exits the guard pose which is vulnerable so you could do something like charge a big R2 timed to land right after the guard pose finishes. This has been done with certain enemies in earlier souls games where they have parry stances but you can do jumping attacks or unparriable weapon arts to beat the parry

This would be better design because it would be consistent and clearly communicated to the player so they can figure out themselves how to approach the fight. As opposed to "Waterfowl has a 45 second cooldown which gets reset by the grab lunge" which is metagaming. You heard that on the Internet, nothing in the game communicates this

Several of her attacks do not give you enough time to read the attack itself but you are expected to avoid them by remembering the sequence which leads to them, such as a dodge to the left or a particular horizontal slash which has an instant sweep after it. You can't cleanly fight modern souls bosses by watching them any more, everything is about figuring out an AI flowchart while memorising branching sequences of boss combos

dont play by her rules and dodge forward left or forward right as soon as she attacks and there is your opening to attack her. repeat until she is dead and then enjoy r34 of her.

Then maybe she should also have the HP, resistance and poise of a player. If they wanted her to be an NPC invader type of enemy they should have made her one.
It also makes no sense because the player only does this because of the brainless AI. It makes no sense the other way around. The boss sets the pace and the player reacts to it. Having the boss stop attacking just pauses the fight.
